Jack Johnson doesn’t do anything forcefully. Gentle, mellow vibes have been his stock in trade since his 2011 debut, Brushfire Fairytales, and that doesn’t change on Meet the Moonlight, his eighth studio album, delivered some 21 years after his first. That’s a long stretch of time to mine the same vein, but the relaxed vibes of Meet the Moonlight are somewhat deceptive; underneath the placid surface, Johnson is taking a few risks. Much of the shift can be attributed to his collaboration with Blake Mills, a guitarist who usually works with such indie rock and Americana acts as Fiona Apple and Alabama Shakes. Mills doesn’t bring the noise or explicitly arty attacks to the laid-back environs of Jack Johnson. Rather, Mills coaxes out the atmosphere, allowing “One Step Ahead” to pulsate to a vibrant, colorful, and relaxed beat, and letting “Costume Party” unfurl with an appealingly languid gait. Other parts of Meet the Moonlight also have readily apparent textures — “3AM Radio” gurgles softly, “Don’t Look Now” almost has an urgency to its chorus — but the Mills approach lets such spare numbers as the closing “Any Wonder” feel full and realized, and not like sketches. These subtle shifts and shadings help make Meet the Moonlight a quietly adventurous album as well as one of Jack Johnson’s best. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

In Between Dub, featuring a remix collection of some of Jack Johnson’s most beloved recordings from his over two decade long career, but with a dub twist. A three-year creation, the album began after Jack reached out to famed reggae pioneer Lee “Scratch” Perry in early 2020 to produce a dub remix album. After a year-long pandemic pause, Lee “Scratch” Perry began working on several tracks, crafting original music and mixes from his studio in Jamaica. Lee “Scratch” Perry sent the sketches over to Jack in Hawaii and together they connected to collaborate on a direction.

Sounding at times like a more laid-back G. Love (without the rap tendencies), Johnson celebrates the simple pleasures and asks the big questions with the childlike innocence that only someone living in a literal paradise could muster. ‘Banana Pancakes’ is a Harry Nilsson-like groover that urges listeners to skip work and enjoy themselves every so often, while ‘Good People’ decries the age of reality television with a poignancy reminiscent of Donovan at his free-spirited best. Perhaps the track that most accurately encapsulates Johnson’s unique less-is-more approach, however, is ‘Belle,’ a jazzy ditty that clocks in at less than two minutes and lets a swooning accordion tell the bulk of the story.

A former professional surfer and self-proclaimed beach bum, Jack Johnson is an unlikely candidate for rock-star status. Somehow, however, this everyman’s mellow pop songs seem to tap into a commonly held desire for the simple life. The formula on IN BETWEEN DREAMS doesn’t vary much from Johnson’s previous albums, but is no less engaging delicately strummed acoustic guitar, round bass lines, and gently funky drum patterns form a comforting bed for the Hawaii native’s effortlessly soulful R&B-meets-folk vocals.

All The Light Above It Too was recorded over the past year at Jack’s Mango Tree Studio in Hawaii. For the first time in years Johnson handled most of the instrumentation himself, echoing the four-track recordings that launched his career over 17 years ago. He worked with producer Robbie Lackritz (Feist, Bahamas), and brought in the band to play on a few of the tracks.

Jack Johnson’s To The Sea debuted at number one in the US in 2010 and topped the charts in five other countries. Recorded again in two solar-powered studios, the material on this album broadened out the range of instrumentation with more electric guitar and was even a bit heavier than what was expected from Johnson. Nonetheless fans embraced this new sound, giving Johnson another US gold and Canadian platinum album. G. Love guests on harmonica on two tracks.

Jack Johnson’s live album recorded En Concert on his 2008 world tour. Johnson released a companion live concert film of the same name, En Concert the album isn’t exactly the soundtrack to that film. It’s a compilation of some of the special moments on the tour, including a version of Constellations with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder from the Bonnaroo Festival. Longtime crowd favourites are mashed up with snippets from some of Johnson’s own favorite songs: Do You Remember segues into a verse from Jimi Hendrix’s Remember; Johnson’s The Horizon Has Been Defeated blends into Paul Simon’s Mother and Child Reunion. 100% of the 2008 tour profits and profits from sales of this live release went to fund the Kokua Hawaii Foundation and the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation to support environmental, art, and music education around the world.

For the first time in his career Jack Johnson recorded outside of his home turf of Hawaii. He picked a location no less sunny, however: a solar-powered studio in Los Angeles. While the location might have been different, the outcome was the same: another smash hit for Johnson, another million-seller in the US and another number one album in six countries. Sleep Through The Static took on a darker, more sombre tone as Johnson dedicated the album to his late cousin and wrote about feelings of grief and loss he was experiencing.

Jack Johnson accepted the challenge of writing a collection of children’s songs to accompany the animated film version of Curious George released in 2006. The resulting soundtrack album went to number one in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and became a US million seller. Since Curious George doesn’t speak in the movie, the monkey’s voice is only heard through Johnson’s songs. This required Johnson to research the perspective of an inquisitive monkey. After reading the screenplay, he studied sketches of Curious George until the music came to him. Guests include Ben Harper, G. Love and Matt Costa.

Jack Hody Johnson is Hawaii-born singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is known primarily for his work in the soft rock and acoustic genres. The title On And On is an apt description of Jack Johnson’s sales and chart triumphs with this album. Johnson’s second release was his second million-selling album in the US, also certified platinum in the UK and gold in Canada. The success of his debut was a long, slow build, taking time for word to spread. So lots of fans were primed for this follow-up in 2003 which wasn’t a vast departure musically from the breezy, laid-back acoustic tunes of the debut, although some of the songs touched on more serious topical issues like materialism in America and war.
