Shamanic. Repetitive. Hypnotic. Impressive. Each new mass celebrated by Godspeed You! Black Emperor has a tendency to trigger the same adjectives. And while the post-rock collective from Montreal have rarely changed their style, each of their new albums must be apprehended as an entity in its own right. And Luciferian Towers (what a title!) confirms this trend. With this sixth album, the Godspeed gurus seem to focus more on the melodic fabric of the record, than on its compositions. The impressive anthems contained in the album reek of sulphur, even of Armageddon. It’s a known fact: the Devil entertains more than God, and every instant of Luciferian Towers will make you raise your eyebrows and open your mouths, in awe. The inimitable GYBE returns with another soundtrack for our times. As the heretical anarcho-punk spirit of the title implies, Godspeed harnesses some particularly raw power, spittle and grit across two riveting 20-minute side-length trajectories of noise-drenched widescreen post-rock: inexorable chug blossoms into blown-out twang, as some of the band’s most soaring, searing melodies ricochet and converge amidst violin and bassline counterpoint. Field recordings and roiling semi-improvised passages frame these fervent epics, and two shorter self-contained 6-minute pieces find the band at its most devastatingly beautiful, haunting and elegiac.
