Gianandrea Noseda is widely recognized as one of the leading conductors of his generation. He is Musical America’s 2015 Conductor of the Year.
Gianandrea Noseda’s appointment as Music Director of the Teatro Regio Torino in 2007 ushered in a transformative era for the company: his initiatives have propelled the Teatro Regio Torino onto the global stage, where it has become one of Italy’s most important cultural exports. Under his leadership the Teatro Regio Torino has launched its first tours outside of Torino with performances in Austria, China, France, Germany, Japan and Russia. In August 2014 Gianandrea Noseda brought the Teatro Regio Torino to the Edinburgh Festival for its United Kingdom debut. In December 2014 he also led the Teatro Regio Torino in a historic first, and critically acclaimed, tour of North America with concert per¬formances of William Tell in Chicago (Harris Theater), Toronto (Roy Thomson Hall), New York (Carnegie Hall) and Ann Arbor, Michigan (University Musical Society).

When Gianandrea Noseda was appointed Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic, great things were expected – the reputation of this young conductor preceded him. What was less expected was the diversity of repertoire that he would conduct, with equal success. His releases for Chandos, from Prokofiev to Dallapiccola, routinely pick up accolades from the critics. This disc features two of Dvorak’s neglected concertos, performed with great élan by soloists James Ehnes and Rustem Hayroudinoff. Both works have been overshadowed by Dvorak’s more popular Cello Concerto in B minor, but, as is apparent from this recording, both are delightful pieces, full of Slavic colour and folk rhythms, and characteristic of Dvorak at his best.

In her first recital album devoted entirely to Italian opera, soprano Diana Damrau takes the golden age of bel canto, the early 19th century, as the starting point for an exploration of theatrical and musical passion that leads to the high-octane verismo drama of the 1890s. “Italian opera is an art form that deals with real feelings,” she says of the arias she has chosen by Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini and Leoncavallo, lit up by her coloratura pyrotechnics and dramatic prowess.

As part of the Musica Italiana series, the BBC Philharmonic and Gianandrea Noseda perform two important works by Alfredo Casella, a largely forgotten Italian composer who was actually one of the most important of his generation. Italian composers in the early years of the twentieth century were not much interested in the symphony. Casella, however, was a major exception. On the advice of Giuseppe Martucci, the thirteen-year-old Casella had been sent to the Paris Conservatoire where, alongside outstanding fellow students such as Maurice Ravel and George Enescu, he received the all-round professional training that would not have been available to him in Italy.

Premiered in 1962, the War Requiem is one of the twentieth century’s defining works. Britten was commissioned to write it for the re-dedication of Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed during the Second World War. Interspersing the Latin mass of the dead with texts by war poet Wilfred Owen he created a work that both mourned the dead and pleaded the futility of war.

The cycle of symphonic poems known as Má vlast by Smetana is well known to most music lovers, but how many people know any of his other orchestral music? Well, this disc provides the opportunity to explore the symphonic poems which preceded Má vlast. There are three from his ‘Swedish’ period: Richard III, Wallenstein’s Camp and Hakon Jarl. Written in his native Prague, Prague Carnival and the remaining works on this disc demonstrate a more nationalistic style. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the BBC Philharmonic in an important introduction to Smetana’s orchestral output which confirms the composer’s status as one of the greatest Czech composers of the nineteenth century.
