Michael, Fred Again announced this morning that he is playing a surprise live show at the Sydney Opera House – tonight. After more than 120,000 people queued for tickets and he temporarily crashed the Opera House website, it has sold out. Tell me more about this guy – and is there any chance of getting a ticket to that show?

If you are asking this now, it’s already too late. Fred Again – whose real name is the extremely British Frederick John Philip Gibson – could be described as the Taylor Swift of the dance world: a musician and DJ who attracts fearsome love and scepticism in equal measure. He has been making music for a decade – first as a protege of Brian Eno, then as a songwriter for George Ezra and Rita Ora. But he really blew up during lockdowns with a trilogy of albums titled Actual Life, all of which feature samples from conversations with his friends and peers set to house-ish tracks.

Case in point: his breakout hit Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing), where fellow DJ The Blessed Madonna waxes lyrical about the communities forged on the dancefloor over synths. You may have heard it at the end of Triangle of Sadness.

Brian Eno and Fred Again.. are releasing a collaborative album, Secret Life, this Friday via Four Tet’s label Text Records. The surprise drop has been dubbed “the most beautiful album of 2023” by Four Tet on Twitter when announcing the release.

Secret Life was written between 2020 and 2022, and was mastered by Kieran Hebden (Four Tet).

The duo met when Fred Again.., aka Fred Gibson, joined an a cappella group based at Eno’s studio as a teenager. They’ve also previously worked together on Brian Eno’s albums, Someday World and High Life, with Gibson credited as a songwriter (High Life only) and co-producer.

Featuring a mix of both released and unreleased original tracks, edits and remixes, this USB is essentially a gold mine for any fans of the producer. Including masters of released tracks such as ‘Turn On The Lights again..‘ and ‘Rumble,’ its the edits and remixes that fans are looking to the most. One of the biggest parts of this USB has to be the still unreleased Anyma remix of ‘Turn On The Lights again..’ which has been making its rounds within different sets for a good few months now. Other highlights include Fred’s popular live show edit of Moderat and Frank Ocean, and his bootleg of Overmono.

Actual Life (April 14 – December 17 2020) is the debut solo album from British producer Fred Gibson under the stage name Fred Again. It was released on April 16, 2021 through again.. Records. The composition of the album involves short clips from various sources, such as YouTube videos and FaceTime conversations, layered with synthesizers. The album revolves around the COVID-19 pandemic and was an outlet for Gibson to explore “a year of finding love and mourning its loss”.

The album was preceded by Actual Life, a five track extended play released initially on May 15, 2020 featuring one song present on this album, and extended mixes of “Adam” and “Me”. On Apple Music, the EP has a release date of June 12, 2020 and also includes “Marnie (Wish I Had U)

Although Fred Gibson’s whirlwind rise to fame has largely occurred over the last two years, his talents were championed throughout the 2010s by the cream of the industry: Brian Eno, Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, Eminem, Headie One, Rita Ora… a list as measureless as it is manifold. After being dubbed Producer of the Year at the Brit Awards in 2020, Gibson began work on the Actual Life project — his début solo venture — the first instalment of which would be released the following year, under the Fred again.. moniker. To borrow the words of good friend Marea Stamper, what came next was indeed ‘marvelous’: a string of wildly successful live shows the world over, a sophomore album, collaborations with such superstars as Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex and Four Tet—and one particularly iconic set from a recent Boiler Room party in London. The music conceived over this period forms the basis for Actual Life 3 – a celebration of freedom, and emancipation from the collective trauma of these past years.
