Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is so familiar to us today that it is hard to imagine how confusing it was to the first listeners because of its novelty. In contrast to “Faraway Light”, the first of the Lithuanian’s two violin concertos Pēteris Vasks: the work – which pits human madness against the eternal glitter of distant stars – seduces at first glance, effortlessly charms the ear and has established itself as a classic of our time.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completed his Symphony No. 41 in C major, K. 551, on 10 August 1788. The longest and last symphony that he composed, it is regarded by many critics as among the greatest symphonies in classical music. The work is nicknamed the Jupiter Symphony, probably coined by the impresario Johann Peter Salomon.

In an album of world-premiere recordings, Ben Parry conducts London Voices and the English Chamber Orchestra in choral music by British composer Jonathan Rutherford.

One of the first students to attend the Yehudi Menuhin School, Jonathan Rutherford went on to study with Lennox Berkeley, Harrison Birtwistle, Nadia Boulanger and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Rutherford’s choral music embraces sacred and secular texts ranging from the Bible to Oscar Wilde. This release features Rutherford’s setting of Psalm 13 for choir and strings, in which lamentation gives way to peace; The Artist and The Master, in which he adds musical layers to Wilde’s spiritual storytelling; and the elegiac Final Parting, to words by Julie Rutherford. The release ends with the good-humoured Four Toasts, composed during Rutherford’s teen years and later revised and orchestrated.

A virtuoso harpsichordist and organist, it is remarkable that J.S. Bach composed only one original work for keyboard and orchestra. The fifth Brandenburg Concerto, with its huge sixty-five bar cadenza in the first movement, created the blueprint for all piano concertos that followed. However, Bach the great arranger mined his other concertos to create seven more keyboard works (No.6, omitted here, is for keyboard, flutes and strings). Bach performed these concertos at social gatherings of the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig, directing from the keyboard. This program from Korean pianist Sonya Bach and the English Chamber Orchestra showcases not only Bach’s ability as a player, but also the composer’s genius as an arranger.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Symphony No. 36 in C major, K. 425, also known as the Linz Symphony during a stopover in the Austrian town of Linz as he and his wife travelled back home to Vienna from Salzburg in late 1783. The entire symphony was written in four days to accommodate the local count’s announcement of a concert, upon hearing of the Mozarts’ arrival in Linz.

This programme dedicated to Joaquín Rodrigo includes a pair of his landmark works, recorded in the late 1970s by Spanish 10-string guitarist Narciso Yepes working with two different orchestras led by García Navarro. The Fantasía is a 1978 performance from the English Chamber Orchestra while the Concierto de Aranjuez is from a 1979 recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Both orchestras bring out the best in Rodrigo’s music, with its astounding ability to evoke feelings and visualizations of rural Spain and its romantic past.

When Henryk Szeryng died in the spring of 1988 at the age of 69, the world lost one of the great aristocrats of the violin. A patrician in his bearing, rather like Heifetz, his gestures restricted to what is necessary, Szeryng’s fidelity to the score can be heard in his recordings for Philips (the label with which he was most closely associated) and for Mercury and Deutsche Grammophon.

At the same time, as decried by Rubinstein, who had been so influential in encouraging him to establish an international career, “Real music lovers want emotion – great moments – which Szeryng’s playing gives them.”

In the 250 years since the death of Handel, the Organ Concerto of Francis Poulenc is the only work of its kind which has established a place in the standard concert repertoire. This is an extraordinary situation in itself, and it becomes even more extraordinary on closer inspection, for this was an uncharacteristic work composed for an unexpected medium by the most unlikely composer….

It is a joy to the ear to have well- loved music treated to extra vocal splendours at both ends of the soprano register.” –Gramophone

Brazilian composers in the 19th century often sought state scholarships to enable them to study in Europe where they were to become influenced by the German, Italian and French compositional schools. They also became involved in the vogue for writing suites based on ancient dances, such as Nepomuceno’s delightful Ancient Suite, premiered at Grieg’s home, or Braga’s Madrigal-Pavana which evokes the belle époque ballrooms of Rio de Janeiro. Miguéz’s Suite in the Old Style is polyphonic and lively, while Gomes’ Sonata for Strings is his finest non-operatic work.

These interpretations of Mozart by Benjamin Hochman – a musician born in Jerusalem in 1980 and a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and of the Mannes College of Music in New York where he studied with Claude Frank and Richard Goode – could never be accused of dwelling on the past. Here, he has surrounded himself with the English Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble that he himself conducts and which has dedicated itself many times to this essential corpus of the piano concerto, for example with Murray Perahia for CBS in the 1980s, or with Daniel Barenboim for EMI twenty years before. For this session, recorded at St. John Smith Square in London on the 1st and 2nd of April 2019, Hochman has chosen two of the most renowned concertos, the tragic 24th and the more cheerful and lyrically demure 17th. These vigorous interpretations may surprise listeners by the apparent lack of feeling and also by the clear polyphonies, almost as if obsessed with honouring the memory of J.S. Bach. Over the course of the 2019-2020 season, Benjamin Hochman is focussing primarily on Mozart and is performing a complete collection of the Sonatas at the Israel Conservatory in Tel Aviv, as well as several other Mozart recitals on various other stages. He is a pianist that would be interesting to hear in France, also especially playing Schubert, who remains one of his favourite composers.
