How Great Thou Art, Elvis’ second gospel album, had very different conceptions of gospel music on its two sides. The first side, including the title track and “In the Garden,” was very high church, with hymnal readings and quietly burbling organ accompaniment. The second side was a far more exciting proposition, with an alternately rocking or swinging piano, some breakneck tempos, and the type of performances more apt to be heard at the gospel singing meetings held in Memphis during Elvis’ early years than at church (or, at least, most churches). Fans who prefer either Elvis the crooner or Elvis the rocker will, likewise, have different feelings about each side. On the first, Elvis is full-throated and sincere; on the second, it’s easy to picture him cracking a smile as he leads the quartet on “So High” and “By and By.”

The album his third and final studio gospel album, and the most contemporary of the three. He Touched Me was certified Gold on March 27, 1992 and Platinum on July 15, 1999 by the RIAA.

Good Times is a 1974 album by American singer and musician Elvis Presley and his 20th studio album. The album was constructed by the first pick of a session held at Stax Studios in Memphis in December 1973 and two songs, “I’ve Got a Thing About You Baby” and “Take Good Care of Her”, which were left over from the session at Stax in July 1973. The album includes a collection of songs that vary in style and genre. Released the same day as the recording of Elvis: Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis was being made, the title was taken from the song “Talk About the Good Times”. Many of the songs are covers of hits at the time, like “Spanish Eyes” and “She Wears My Ring”. Charting low at the time of its release, it was considered typical 1970s Elvis material and was his first album to hit the “cut-out bins”. The album did have some success though upon its original release, becoming a Cashbox #1 hit and charting in the Top 50 in the UK. Original copies of the LP with the sticker on the cover (stating the singles on the album) are very rare and sell for large amounts on auction sites. The album released two singles, both hits: “I’ve Got a Thing About You Baby” rose to #4 on the Country charts, #39 pop; “My Boy” hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts, as well as #14 Country and #20 Pop.

Fun in Acapulco in many ways was a very succesful soundtrack of a Presley movie for a reason apart from its original sales. The Latin feeling and its uncompromising south of the border beat seem to provide a platform of very exciting tunes, fresh either in performance either in song presentation. Even the ever considered silly tune “(There’s) No Room To Rhumba In A Sports Car” holds an utterly playful performance that requires to be taken for what it really is, a happy tune. As far as happy tunes go, the soundtrack is filled with many of them that simply have you at least tapping your feet to the latin beat. The song “Mexico” in its alternate version makes you wonder why did the album producers prefered the version that provides the film version that excludes sporadic verses due to the duet sequence that is showcased in the film between Elvis and his new little Mexican friend. The full version in terms of lyrics provides a wonderful listening and dancing experience and above all shows the undisputed talent of Presley to artistically tap into a foreign musical venue with great charisma and unmistaken performing talent. Furthermore, the album provides some very romantic themes that can be easily considered as Presley top love songs, the case is made certainly for the song “Marguerita” an overtly passionate and filled with latin feeling tune that is both tender and sad.

One-half of the imponderably titled From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis (later issued as a separate album, Elvis in Person at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada), captures Elvis from the summer of 1969, while the exhilaration of conquest was still evident. It’s a nice compromise between mere entertainment and the revelatory: The first few songs are old hits to pull you in; the second side opens with a roaring medley of “Mystery Train” and Rufus Thomas’s “Tiger Man” and leads to a staggering seven-minute “Suspicious Minds.” The studio album, ten tracks from the previous Memphis sessions, are a letdown and, even at the time of release, the two-fer concept seemed ill conceived.

The King’s first recordings of the 1970s saw him cut loose live in the studio with a band in sync with his sensibility. Recorded live in RCA’s Studio B in Nashville over the course of a five day/night run in June (there was also an additional session on 22 September), Elvis’ performances from those sessions formed the core of the albums Elvis: That’s the Way It Is, Elvis Country (I’m 10,000 Years Old) and Love Letters from Elvis.

From Elvis in Memphis was released in June 1969 to favorable reviews. It was recorded at American Sound Studio in Memphis in January and February 1969 under the direction of producer Chips Moman and backed by its house band, informally known as “The Memphis Boys”. The album peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200, number two on the country charts and number one in the United Kingdom, and its single “In the Ghetto” reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1970. In later years, it garnered further favorable reviews, while it was ranked number 190 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

For LP Fans Only marks the first time RCA dipped into the Sun vaults to fill out an Elvis Presley LP. To a certain extent, their hand was forced. By January 1959, when For LP Fans Only hit the stores, Elvis was eight months into his Army stint with no end in sight, so RCA was stuck for new product and the easiest solution was to dig up Sun sessions and pair them with early RCA cuts initially released on singles or EPs. Just under half of this is devoted to Sun sides, and not only are “That’s All Right,” “Mystery Train,” “I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone” and “You’re a Heartbreaker” some of the best music Presley ever made but they’re paired with early RCA sessions that complement them perfectly: in fact, the hopping “My Baby Left Me” feels as if it could’ve been recorded by Sam Phillips. Apart from the cute, charming enough “Poor Boy” — a rare Presley co-write taken from the Love Me Tender EP that could qualify as the record’s only stumble — this LP rocks hard with a serious bluesy bent: there’s a carnality to his growl on “Lawdy, Miss Clawdy” rivaled by his smoldering “I Was the One,” then he tears it up on “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” Whether RCA truly intended For LP Fans Only to be a tight, exciting record is questionable — it was product, pure and simple; there was no way for the label to realize the blessing they were giving to Presley fans by getting the Sun sessions into circulation (this would be the only place they could be found on LP until 1976) — but they stumbled upon one of the finest full-length rock & roll records of the ’50s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Elvis (also known as Elvis Presley No. 2) is the second studio album by American rock and roll singer Elvis Presley, released by RCA Victor on October 19, 1956 in mono. Recording sessions took place on September 1, September 2, and September 3 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood, with one track left over from the sessions for Presley’s debut album at the RCA Victor recording studios on January 30 in New York. It spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart that year, making Presley the first recording artist to have both albums go straight to number one in the same year. It would go on to spend 5 weeks at #1 in total. It was certified Gold on February 17, 1960, and Platinum on August 10, 2011, by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Today is a studio album by American singer Elvis Presley, released on May 7, 1975 by RCA Records. The Today sessions were held in RCA’s Studio C, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, March 10–12, 1975, and marked the last time Presley would record in a studio. He last recorded at Studio C, Hollywood in 1972 where he recorded the gold records “Burning Love” and “Separate Ways”. At this time, Elvis was 40 years old. He was accompanied by his then-current girlfriend, Sheila Ryan. In the 2005 FTD TODAY release from these sessions, Presley asked her to “step up here Sheila, let me sing to ya baby” on Take 1 of Don McLean’s “And I Love You So”. He continued to make “And I Love You So” and “Fairytale” a part of his live concerts until his death. On stage, he often referred to “Fairytale” as the story of his life.

Today featured a new rock song, “T-R-O-U-B-L-E”, which was released as its first single and went Top 40 in the US. “Bringin’ It Back” was its second single in the US. The album also features covers of songs by Perry Como, Tom Jones, The Pointer Sisters, Billy Swan, Faye Adams, The Statler Brothers and Charlie Rich.

“Green, Green Grass of Home” was released as a single in the UK, where it went Top 30, and also received US airplay. Presley first heard the song in 1967 while driving his bus back to Memphis after making another movie, and heard Tom Jones’ new single “Green Green Grass of Home” for the first time and loved it. He had the Memphis Mafia call the local AM station to make them replay it over and over again. Eight years later, he cut his own version.

Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas is the King of Rock & Roll giving it the old ho-ho-ho for his fans, circa 1971. As can be expected of later Elvis, he’s at his best when he slows down and lets the profound nuance of his voice wrap itself around the material. “The First Noel,” “Silver Bells,” “Blue Christmas,” and “It Won’t Seem Like Christmas (Without You)” are among the highlights. At 12 tracks, it’s also more generous than many of the repackages where albums were trimmed to eight or nine songs.

In the spring of 1969, after a trough of several years, the public finally seemed genuinely interested in Elvis Presley again — the NBC special had been broadcast, the first of the Memphis-based, Chips Moman-produced comeback albums was about to be released, he was being heard on the radio again, and it probably seemed like a good idea to test the waters with some budget-priced product. That’s the only possible explanation for the existence of Elvis Sings Flaming Star, a low-priced LP that showed up in the late winter of 1969, encompassing songs drawn from across eight years of Elvis’ recording history. Even more astonishing is how this seemingly haphazard assembly of material — including a title song (from one of his best movies) that had not previously appeared on an LP, a live cut from the 1968 NBC special, and a two-song Texas medley that would be completely embarrassing in the hands of anyone else — holds up as well as it did. It is the voice, of course, that matters here — Presley’s singing was so good at the points captured on this nothing-seeming little budget release that he could make even the most dubious song seem worth two minutes of one’s time. And on “Too Much Monkey Business” and “She’s a Machine” you even get the hard, edgy side of Elvis that had been obscured by too many third-rate movie songs. The rock music critics who were around in 1969 were never quite sure what to make of this album because it was a given that it was nothing but the most superficial scratching of the surface of that library, yet time has allowed it to age well, as a strange and idiosyncratic (but strangely satisfying on its own terms) compilation. If it added nothing to his reputation in 1969, then it at least offered an inexpensive way for the curious and the unfamiliar to get a smattering of some of his work that was otherwise mostly unavailable at the time.
