Just one year after her breakthrough double album “Bad Girls,” Donna Summer left Casablanca Records to become the first artist signed to the new Geffen Records label.

Donna’s final album of the ’80s was 1989’s “Another Time and Place,” for which she collaborated with British producer Stock Aitken Waterman, who scored several hits and million-dollar sales. The album’s lead single, “This Time I Know It’s For Real,” was an uplifting, club-ready, radio-ready hit that reached No. 3 in the U.K. and No. 7 in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Donna her highest chart position in more than a decade. Four additional singles were released from the album, including the two Top 20 hits “I Don’t Wanna Get Hurt” and “Love’s About To Change My Heart,” which gave Donna her first Top 10 hit in the UK since 1977, as well as remixed versions of “When Love Takes Over You” and “Breakaway.”

Donna Summer gained prominence during the 1970s disco era, propelled by her incessant and creative driving force behind the genre’s global popularity, rightly earning the title ‘Queen of Disco’ and becoming one of the most successful recording artists of the entire decade, now having sold more than 130 million records worldwide. Donna was the first artist to have three consecutive double-albums reach No. 1 on the US Billboard charts and also became the first artist to achieve four No. 1 singles in a 13 month period. Summer became the first artist signed to the new Geffen Records label in 1980 and the second album released for Geffen is this 1982 classic ‘Donna Summer’, which saw production duties by Quincy Jones. This proved to be a masterstroke, as the next album that Quincy produced was Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. The album’s R&B/Pop dynamic featured a ‘Who’s Who’ of the recorded music industry, from the album’s lead single ‘Love Is in Control (Finger On the Trigger)’, to the All Star Chorus on the Jon & Vangelis written ‘State of Independence’, the beautiful ‘The Woman in Me’, the Bruce Springsteen-penned and performed ‘Protection’ and ‘(If It) Hurts Just a Little’, which was heavily sampled in 1999 by Cassius in ‘Cassius 1999’. To celebrate the album’s 40th Anniversary, ‘Mystery of Love’ with those memorable James Ingram vocal harmonies has been given a contemporary R&B/Dance feel, with respect to the original version, by producer Le Flex, who has produced and worked on a number of chart hits. This CD format, packaged in a beautiful A5 Mediabook, also contains 7-inch single versions of the hits, a non-album ‘B’-side, as well as the 12-inch Dance Mix of ‘Love Is in Control….’, a newly-authored 8,000 word essay, with foreword by Bruce Sudano, by noted US writer Christian John Wikane, featuring new and his own archive interviews conducted with David Foster, Phillip Ingram, Le Flex, Steve Lukather, Bill Meyers, Richard Page, Greg Phillinganes, Bruce Roberts, Brenda Russell, Dionne Warwick, and the late James Ingram.

After years of silence, in 2018 Mauro Malavasi and Davide Romani resurrected Change with an album that retained their classic sound but with a contemporary twist, produced and mixed with the inhouse production team, Figo Sound, who were invited to remix two of Donna’s tracks. Figo Sound has created two contemporary radio-friendly tracks, with ‘The Wanderer’, retaining it’s shuffling beat and ‘Looking Up’, which firmly plants Donna Summer back on the Dancefloor!

After becoming the queen of disco thanks to orgasmathon hits like “Love to Love You Baby” and “I Feel Love,” Donna Summer topped off her five-year rise to fame with this live set. Certainly not a contender for first-disc choice, Live and More still works quite well as a ’70s sampler for the converted. And since disco was the party music par excellence, the album’s feel is one of a all-nighter in action. Featuring her signature hits and a fat chunk of disco tracks from the Once Upon a Time record, sides one and three solidify Summer’s reputation as one of the most exciting and slick singers on stage. Balancing out the requisite dance material, Summer spends side two waxing nostalgic via a pop standards medley (“The Man I Love,” “I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good,” “Some of These Days”) and some nice jazz and blues-imbued fare of her own. And ending the album on a very high note, Summer indulges in “McArthur Park Suite,” a classic long-player that bookends two of Summer and producer Giorgio Moroder’s pop disco numbers with a dance-friendly take on Jimmy Webb’s monumental classic. Along with cloud-walking bouncers like “I Love You” and “Last Dance,” this closing piece finds Summer at her sophisticated and tuneful best. There’s nothing here to eclipse the original versions of these cuts – save for the Webb cover, which is new – but the Summer faithful will nonetheless want to pick up this very enjoyable concert recording.

Donna Summer’s ‘lost’ album ‘I’m a Rainbow’ is getting a new ‘Recovered & Recoloured’ reissue later this year.

The album was recorded as the Queen of Disco’s second release for Geffen Records with producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, following 1980’s ‘The Wanderer’, but was axed weeks before release as the star went into the studio with Quincy Jones to begin work on follow-up ‘Donna Summer’.

The LP went unreleased until 1996, when an expanded 18-track version materialised, and now a slimmed-down, 10-track version of the album is to be issued, featuring the tunes completely re-imagined by a host of international producers.

Junior Vasquez, Le Flex, Figo Sound, Jean Tonique, Ladies On Mars and Oliver Nelson have all contributed to the release, which is due out October 8.
