Manteca” is one of the earliest foundational tunes of Afro-Cuban jazz. Co-written by Dizzy Gillespie, Chano Pozo and Gil Fuller in 1947, it is among the most famous of Gillespie’s recordings (along with the earlier “A Night in Tunisia”) and is “one of the most important records ever made in the United States”, according to Gary Giddins of The Village Voice. “Manteca” is the first tune rhythmically based on the clave to become a jazz standard.

Gillespie was born one of the younger of ten children and was supported and encouraged in his musical development by his father, a construction worker and local amateur bandleader. He played the piano at age four, then self-taught on the slide trombone, and before he was twelve, he switched to the trumpet. He received a scholarship to Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina, but soon left school to become a full-time musician.

Although Lalo Schifrin is justifiably praised for his soundtrack work, many jazz purists turn up their noses at his jazz dates, such as his ’60s work with Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery. The things that make Schifrin an anathema to the diehards — the huge orchestras, the pop and soul riffs, the general air of over the top theatricality — are all over 1977’s Free Ride, his reunion date with Dizzy Gillespie. (Schifrin had been Gillespie’s arranger in the late ’50s.) In fact, Free Ride is so painfully dated that it’s transformed into cockeyed cool, just the sort of record ironic hipsters should listen to while they’re reading the novelizations of ’70s cop shows that they bought for a bundle off of eBay. Gillespie plays with his usual wit and panache, but most of the time, he sounds like a sideman on his own album; the real focus of Schifrin’s arrangements is the funky wah-wah guitars and ARP synthesizer solos that take center stage on tracks like “Fire Dance” (which sounds exactly like it should be the theme for a Charlie’s Angels spinoff) and the mellow disco of the closing “Last Stroke of Midnight.” Occasionally, Gillespie gets to break out on his own album, with the lovely solo on “Love Poem for Donna” his particular standout. For what it is, Free Ride is really quite good (guests include Lee Ritenour and future star Ray Parker, Jr.), but it’s very much a record of and for its time.

Dizzy Gillespie’s contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time (some would say the best), Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up copying Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis’ emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy’s style was successfully recreated. Somehow, Gillespie could make any “wrong” note fit, and harmonically he was ahead of everyone in the 1940s, including Charlie Parker. Unlike Bird, Dizzy was an enthusiastic teacher who wrote down his musical innovations and was eager to explain them to the next generation, thereby insuring that bebop would eventually become the foundation of jazz.

In his DownBeat magazine review of March 14, 1963, jazz critic Don DeMichael wrote that “Dizzy plays marvelously on this record… There’s a spirit evident that is all too often missing from today’s record sessions – a spirit of vivacious humor and playing-for-the-hell-of-it.”
The AllMusic review states: “this was one of Dizzy Gillespie’s finest sessions of the 1960s… Highly recommended.”

John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie (/ɡɪˈlɛspi/; October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer. He was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser, building on the virtuosic style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard in jazz. His combination of musicianship, showmanship, and wit made him a leading popularizer of the new music called bebop. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, scat singing, bent horn, pouched cheeks, and light-hearted personality provided one of bebop’s most prominent symbols.

Making its first (and long-overdue) appearance on CD, Have Trumpet, Will Excite! was recorded in February 1959 and arguably featured Gillespie’s most underrated band. Bassist Sam Jones and drummer Lex Humphries formed a Rock-of-Gibraltar base over which pianist Junior Mance, at once subtle and blues drenched, created the ideal platform for the trumpeter and the remarkable Les Spann, who was equally original whether on flute or guitar. Spann proved an inspiring foil for Gillespie, and it is sad to reflect that he soon after faded from the scene, eventually to die in penury. With the exception of the leader’s famous “Woody ‘N’ You,” the material draws on the rich resources of the American popular song, and while all seven such cuts abound in imagination and excellent solos, the pick has to be “My Heart Belongs to Daddy,” a glorious combination of power, wit, and melodiousness. Three previously unreleased alternative takes of “There Is No Greater Love” and two of “I Found A Million Dollar Baby” are included, which is nice; nicer still would have been the addition (there was room enough) of the companion album The Ebullient Mr. Gillespie, recorded at the same time. Nevertheless, you won’t regret investing in one of the mature Gillespie’s most satisfying dates. –Richard Palmer
