Been All Around This World, culled from over 40 Garcia/Grisman recording sessions, captures some of the finest and most unexpected moments from these influential figures in American music. Saving the best for last, producer Grisman assembled an engaging program that features songs never heard sung by Garcia before.

This Deluxe edition in Hi-Definition sound, includes four previously unissued tracks in an expose of the acoustic side that Jerry Garcia explored with his longtime friend David Grisman, reflecting the many musical idioms that remained deep, common threads of their relationship. Country roots abound in the title track, George Jones’ “Take Me,” Webb Pierce’s “I Ain’t Never,” Jimmy Martin’s “Drink Up And Go Home” and the previously unissued classic “Long Black Veil.” Their mutual love of traditional folk and blues is evident in Merle Travis’ “Dark As A Dungeon,” “Nine Pound Hammer” and “I’m Troubled.” Bob Dylan’s “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest” is given an endearing treatment with Garcia’s smooth-as-brandy vocals intertwining with Grisman’s light-as-rain mandolin textures. Their passion for soul music is displayed on James Brown’s “I’ll Go Crazy,” an impromptu take that captures the pure spontaneity these two often regaled in.

Accompanying Garcia and Grisman is their rhythm section of Jim Kerwin (bass) and Joe Craven (percussion/fiddle) along with Matt Eakle (flute), all members of the David Grisman Quintet. Other musicians featured are John Kahn, George Marsh and Sally Van Meter on an alternate rendition of Jimmie Rodgers’ “Blue Yodel #9” from Jerry’s last recording session.

Throughout his career, mandolinist David Grisman has performed music that crosses between many boundaries, from “new acoustic” folk to bluegrass and swing-oriented jazz. This set features Grisman’s string group (which also includes violinist Darol Anger, Mike Marshall on mandolin, guitar and violin, Mark O’Connor on violin and guitar, and bassist Rob Wasserman) playing six of Grisman’s diverse originals, an obscure tune, and a brief rendition of John Coltrane’s “Naima.” The music is excellent, but Grisman’s more jazz-oriented projects would be in the future.

David Grisman’s musical interests have been so varied that he is impossible to categorize stylistically, one of the reasons he has long described his playing everywhere as “Dawg Music.” This is a bit of an unusual outing, as it consists of a trio with bluegrass/folk guitarist/vocalist Jim Hurst, Grisman (mostly on mandolin), and his son Samson on bass. Hurst has previously covered Roger Rasnake’s “Cold Hard Business” and this version features his strong vocal and potent solos all around. The deliberate Latin-flavored “Vaya con Dios” was a hit for Les Paul & Mary Ford and also covered by Mel Tormé, Nat King Cole, and numerous vocalists, though the trio tackles it as an intimate instrumental. “Sally Ann” is a decades-old traditional favorite of bluegrass pickers; the trio’s interpretation seems effortless and Samson Grisman does a splendid job playing with the two veterans. Hurst and Grisman share the vocals in the traditional sorrowful country ballad “Mary of the Wild Moor,” while Samson take the lead vocal in a potent version of the late John Hartford’s “I Wish We Had Our Time Again.” Stephen Foster’s “Beautiful Dreamer” is one of his best-loved songs; Grisman’s shimmering mandolin lead stands out in this performance. The rest of the CD is equally strong, and the only shortcoming of the album is the omission of composer credits, as both musicians and fans may want to seek out earlier recordings of tunes unfamiliar to them for comparison. Highly recommended.

David Grisman’s self-named “Dawg” music defies traditional categories, as it is such a unique blend of many influences, including bluegrass, jazz, gypsy music, Latin, and so much more. He’s joined by flutist Matt Eakle, percussionist and violinist Joe Craven, bassist Jim Kerwin, and guitarist Rick Montgomery. The veteran mandolinist wrote six of the eight songs, starting with the cheerful opener, which features everyone in turn. The intricate waltz “Dawgmatism” adds an exotic flavor with Craven’s violin and Eakle’s haunting flute. “Jazzin’ (With Joe-Bob)” is a wild masterpiece (later appearing in slightly different form on his compilation DGQ-20 with jazz DJ Al “Jazzbeaux” Collins as “Jazzin’ With Jazzbeaux”), with Craven providing percussion on bongos (and vocals with assorted hisses and comments) as well as overdubbing a slashing violin solo. “Steppin’ With Stephane” was originally recorded by Grisman with its honoree, jazz violin great Stephane Grappelli. This version is lighter but every bit as swinging. “Bolero de Django,” composed by Django Reinhardt, has a definite gypsy air, though Eakle’s alto flute gives the piece a more modern flavor. “New Dawg’s Rag” is an updated arrangement of an earlier Grisman chart; while the instrumentation has been changed, the impact of this brilliant performance is still pure magic. Throughout this release, Grisman’s playing is nothing short of phenomenal. It should come as no surprise that fans of David Grisman should consider this CD an essential purchase. – Ken Dryden

Tony Rice and David Grisman called themselves the “Gasoline Brothers” — their way of referring to the kinetic connection they felt when playing music together, especially at “burning” tempos! The music in this collection of previously unissued traditional bluegrass performances was recorded at two different sessions. The first was a live radio broadcast from their tour of Japan in May, 1976. The band, billed as The Bluegrass Quintet, included Tony and Dawg with Bill Keith on banjo, Richard Greene on fiddle and Todd Phillips on bass. The second session was an informal jam recorded somewhat later in the 1970s in David’s living room with Steve Arkin on banjo and Todd Phillips on bass. This collection is available in the sonically superior HD (24 bit, 96 kHz) format. Nearly every tune was recorded in one take and the feeling of spontaneity and energy is palpable!

Long before he developed his unique style of “Dawg Music,” mandolinist David Grisman was steeped in bluegrass, though he was even stretching its conceived boundaries early in his professional career. This album combines live recordings from 1966 and one track from 1973, with the supporting musicians including Del McCoury (guitar and vocals) and Jerry McCoury (bass), with banjo player Bill Keith and guitarist Artie Rose added on selected tracks. Grisman performs traditional bluegrass favorites, including excellent adaptations of several classic tunes by Bill Monroe (one of the mandolinist’s musical heroes), plus a few examples of his early compositions, including the Django Reinhardt-influenced “Opus 57” and the equally intricate “Opus 38,” both of which were still part of his active performing repertoire decades later. Frank Wakefield, a great mandolinist who helped Grisman master the instrument, guests on a 1973 performance of “Black Mountain Rag.” While this album is a bit brief by CD standards at just over 30 minutes, it is well worth the investment for David Grisman fans.
