Lee Konitz & Dan Tepfer – Snapshots of an unusual duo: Legendary alto saxophonist Lee Konitz and young pianist Dan Tepfer have been forming a musical team for around ten years…. After playing now for 60+ years, it’s still very challenging for me to play a simple melody and have it clean and touch the reed at the proper time in the proper way. … I could stop and say, well that was a D minor, G seven, but I really don’t want to know that. I just want to know that there’s a combination of notes that makes a sound.

On his new album Inventions / Reinventions, pianist-composer Dan Tepfer performs each of Bach’s beloved 15 Two Part Inventions interleaved in chromatic sequence by 9 of his own free improvisations in the “missing” keys to create a new full, and fully transporting 24-key experience, a 55-minute mix of the timeless and the contemporary. 300 years ago in 1723, Johann Sebastian Bach initially composed his Two Part Inventions as keyboard exercises for his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. While remaining essential studies for burgeoning musicians, these pieces have also long been cherished by generations of music lovers, and recorded by iconic pianists. Tepfer captured Inventions / Reinventions in nighttime recording sessions that he engineered himself in an intimate salon next door to the Paris apartment where he grew up. His improvisations explore the narrative structure Tepfer divined in Bach’s inventions, where the hero, a musical idea, starts off in the home key, goes through wild harmonic adventures through foreign keys, and finally makes it back home.

At 37 years old, Dan Tepfer is one of his generation’s most adventurous jazz pianists. Record after record, whether he’s dealing with Bach or Natural Machines, he confirms his unique approach. “With this project”, explains the Franco-American, “It’s a project where I explore the intersection, in music, between natural and mechanical processes. I do free improvisation at the piano, and programs I’ve written on my computer interact with me in real time as I’m playing, both musically and visually. I love it because it feels like very new territory, and it’s exciting to be exploring it.” The interest is not all in this complex and original writing process but also in what Tepfer creates. He delivers a free and stateless music, as well anchored in jazz as it is in contemporary music to the point that we quickly forget the algorithms with which the album was created. A fascinating record.  – Marc Zisman

2017 release from pianist Dan Tepfer – whom New York magazine dubbed “one of the moment’s most adventurous and relevant musicians”. Eleven Cages features Tepfer returning to the jazz piano trio format for the first time since the 2010 album “Five Pedals Deep”. All Music Guide described the album as “inventive” and “intense”, while Stereophile judged it simply “beautiful”. For Eleven Cages, Tepfer sought to explore the concept of freedom within boundaries, as well as the malleability of time in music.
