With Oslo, Michael Wollny and his trusty rhythm section (bassist Christian Weber and drummer Eric Schaefer) confirm that their project is as solid as ever. Recorded at Rainbow Studio in the Norwegian capital in September 2017, the album confirms that Wollny is one of the most skilful German jazz pianists of his generation. An improviser, here he deploys his staple piano style, with plenty of spaces and silences. His playing carries a sincere romanticism which never feels overdone, and a muted tonality. And whether he is tackling Fauré, Debussy or Rautavaara, or playing themes of his own devising, this fan of Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau, Esbjörn Svensson and Paul Bley imposes a signature piano style all his own. Note that on three tracks the trio are joined by the Norwegian Wind Ensemble.  – Max Dembo

Ellery Eskelin, Christian Weber & Michael Griener – Sensations of Tone (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

The trio with Ellery Eskelin, Christian Weber and Michael Griener presents an extraordinary album: on Sensations Of Tone the New York saxophonist, the Berlin drummer and the Swiss bassist play Free Music as well as Traditional Jazz. “We dug more deeply into our improvisations and looked directly at this shared affinity for early jazz”, Ellery Eskelin writes in the liner notes. The Eskelin-Weber-Griener trio does not fuse the individual ways of playing, it alternates and contrasts. Each of the beautiful standards «Shreveport Stomp», «China Boy», «Moten Swing» and «Ain’t Misbehavin’» is followed by free improvisations. Ellery Eskelin writes: “Separating these performances (rather than mixing them) exposed the ways in which the same «tones» can elicit very different «sensations». And depending upon your own subjective views, despite the obvious differences, there may well be unexpected similarities to be found.” A wonderful music, beyond categories.

“I really love the piano trio,” says Aki Takase, with a passion that mirrors her playing. “But not the old idea, where the pianist is king, and the bassist and the drummer are just sidemen. We are equal.” Indeed, all three musicians are in focus in the trio AUGE: bassist Christian Weber and drummer Michael Griener are among the most original virtuosos of their instruments. On Intakt they have presented brilliant albums with the New York saxophonist Ellery Eskelyn.

Christian Weber recorded albums with Co Streiff and Oliver Lake. Michael Griener is a member of the band Die Enttäuschung and Monks Casino with Alexander von Schlippenbach. Over the course of nearly four decades pianist Aki Takase has provided fresh impetus with different musicians such as reedists David Murray and Rudi Mahall or fellow pianist (and husband) Alexander von Schlippenbach.

The Berlin-based Chicago journalist Peter Margasak writes about the recording: “The music on the debut album from the collective trio AUGE is wide-open, operating from an unobstructed vista where every thing seems possible … Free improvisation rarely sounds so cogent, rippling with an adroit command of rhythm and harmony that erases the line between design and spontaneity.”
