Kinestesia is awareness of the body’s movements directly in the proprioceptors of the muscles and joints themselves. Such an awareness is critical for the creation of sound for an accomplished drummer like Tom Cabrera. For this album of fresh, instantaneous tracks Cabrera enlisted his bandmate from so many ensembles, pianist Chris Forbes and his cohort from myriad other musical groups, double-bassist Phil Sirois. Though this was Forbes and Sirois’ very first encounter, music making was nearly telepathic. As track 4’s titles suggests, this is true sonic Communion.

Each one of my Unseen Rain recordings have featured a side of my improvising personality, from the standards of Film Noir to the wild free jazz of Blood River Shaman. For this latest trio recording I decided to focus on my own compositions. I’ve been writing tunes as well as classical pieces since I was in my late teens. Most of my tunes are either sketches for free improvs or ECM style acoustic jazz. The tunes on this recording span my whole career from 1979 to now. They feature tunes inspired by Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett to more conceptual free tunes like “Particle Momentum”, which uses set theory as a starter, and “Daylight! Red Flower” which is an algorithmic composition based on fractals. There are even two tunes based on standards, “Kacey’s Day” (based on Night and Day) and the homage to victims of violence, “Say Their Names” (based on a dark reharmonization of All the Things You Are). Over all, the recording is meant to take the listener on a journey through variety of moods, from the somber tone poem “November Air” to the open-hearted, child-like “Innocence”, the freebop of Daylight! Red Flower, the heaven-storming Eternal Rising or the rollicking tribute to Paul Bley, Surprised by Joy. I hope the journey proves worthwhile.

Chris Forbes’ music has enriched the New York jazz and improvising scene for some time, gracing the ensembles and recordings of Jason Hwang and Matt Lavelle, among so many others. He is simultaneously iconoclast and iconodule. His musical world is vast, as is evident on this, his first entirely solo piano album Mountain Ocean Mirror Sky. Each piece is its own realm of beauty and meaning – yet one is astonished to discover that each piece is entirely improvised. These resplendent, fully realized compositions did not exist before Chris sat down to record. Though few pianists have succeeded with such artist coherence and beauty in creating completely in the moment, the most obvious example being Keith Jarrett, the trajectory of Forbes’ life and career have led inexorably to this. He would improvise even as a child while his formidable studies in classical composition and performance as well as his career in the jazz world all inform the proceedings on this recording. But it is the inner state of the improviser that guides the hands to the music that first exists in another world and brings it here.
