Circle Records releases a new compilation of recording by the great Swing Trumpet players, Roy Eldridge & Charlie Shavers!
What has started in 1976 with Circle Records jazz recordings is being continued. The label has decided to re-release a selection of their rare jazz recordings digitally. In fact the original vinyl releases are quite rare due to lower pressing amounts. Re-releasing them for streaming will ideally reach a larger number of jazz fans.
The original audio takes have been optimized by restoring and mastering them. One reason is that the recordings suffered from bad acoustics in small, noisy clubs. Another one is the usage of lower quality recording gear in the 1970s and 80s. By using the meanwhile advanced technology the recordings are greatly improved. In addition to the live recordings also the studio recordings have been remastered.

Shavers and Hodges were genii: unflawed musicians, total original minds, two of the great burnished talents that were ablaze in those fiery jazz years. Both seminal figures: Johnny Hodges, one of the three classic alto-saxophonists in jazz, Charlie Shavers, one of the two or three greatest trumpeters of his era. Both had the gift of making perfection sound easy, and both revelled – with an almost Casanova sensuality – in every tonal, and technical richness that their instrument was capable of. On this record, the two old masters perform in two settings each, both with the kind of ripe luscious talent that grows only in the summertime of an art.

Charlie Shavers was an extraordinary musician. His Jazz At The Philharmonic trumpet battles with Roy Eldridge provided some of the most exciting music in jazz history. As a key member of the first jazz “chamber” unit, John Kirby’s fine band, and lead soloist of Tommy Dorsey’s legendary aggregation – he built a reputation as a musician that could cut any gig, and because of his reliability, he was frequently called upon by the brightest starts in jazz to add his special touch to their recordings and live shows. One of his last official albums, “Live At Le Crazy Horse Saloon” captures Shavers live in Paris in 1964. All selections newly remastered.
