“En Rymd av Färg” is well-written and ditto arranged jazz music in the larger format with nice themes and sounds, fantastic performances and a voice “to die for”. The songs were written with the big band members in mind. It is noticeable in the end result which is really good, modern big band music with sterling solos by, among others, Alberto Pinton on baritone saxophone, Christer Olofsson on trombone, magnificent Stefan Wingefors on piano and not least Karolina’s sharpened soprano saxophone. Bohuslän Big Band meets one of Sweden’s most creative and innovative composers and jazz singers – Lina Nyberg. The concert is based on the suite in seven parts that Lina Nyberg wrote for Bohuslän Big Band, but also presents her as composer, arranger, conductor and singer. Each part of the suite is dedicated to a composer or musician who was important to her. During the concert, you will also hear music that Lina has selected, in addition to her own works. These are pieces that had great meaning for her and reflect her love for the big band genre. A well-balanced mix of new and old. The premiere will be in Vara in October 2022, then the production will go on tour in the spring of 2023.

Jan Levander is a composer and multi-instrumentalist from Sweden. When Levander was 17 years old, jazz took hold of his life and became his main musical focus. Over the years, Levander has composed music for various types of constellations, including theater, opera, orchestras, and big bands. Levander’s signum has been various ‘crossovers” between improvised music, chamber music, and Swedish folk music.Jan Levander’s collaboration with Bohuslän Big Band during the 2000s has consisted of several concerts as a saxophone player in the saxophone and woodwind section, arranging and composing for the big band and directing several projects. He knows the big band members well and has written music according to their unique expression and skills, which has been valuable when composing music for Bohuslän Big Band.

Composing for Bohusl”an Big Band has been a great challenge and pleasure. Having the individual musicians and the overall band sound in mind, I tried to shape the music in a way that highlights the specific qualities of each band member. Instead of limiting the writing to a specific theme, I just let my ideas flow and went to the piano to write whenever an idea arose. The outcome is seven pretty different pieces, tied together by the band’s sound and the limited period of time it all was created within, reflecting my take on contemporary big band music anno 2020. Developing the tunes over time with inputs from the musicians has been very inspiring. I want to express a deep gratitude for great times in the rehearsal room, on stage and I the studio. High ambitions and wonderful enthusiasm made the optimal conditions for making music together with this outstanding orchestra. – Kathrine Windfeld

Up & Coming Jazz Talents is a project where Bohuslän Big Band meets young, sharp jazz musicians. Together we play music that the talents choose. The project was started in 2013 and returns every year. The meeting between the band and the young musicians creates new musical exchanges and also opportunities for future collaboration. Several of the young musicians we played with earlier in the project have either returned as guest artists or substitutes in the Bohuslän Big Band. This album resulted in the 2020 edition of Up & Coming Jazz Talents in fantastic concerts at Vara Konserthus and Nefertiti where the audience got to hear tomorrow’s jazz stars. His interest – late in life – in popular song and his high TV profile in much loved opera and stage show numbers. He retained his inimitable vocal timbre with it’s positively sensual beauty of sound throughout his long singing career. This “gold standard” was attained at best by Fritz Wunderlich in the German-speaking world. Schock’s personality and his stage presence assured him a loyal following; later generations can form their own picture with the aid of the present recordings.
