Bob Marley has been called “the first Third World superstar,” a visionary, a revolutionary and even a prophet. Certainly he was one of the most characteristic and challenging performers of this century. His timeless and evocative music continues to have an enormous impact on people of all races throughout the world. Like most popular artists, Marley wrote about love. But his music also reflected a militant spirituality, a blood-red hatred of racism and colonialism, and a deep yearning for personal, artistic, political and social freedom.

2013 marks the 35th anniversary of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ now revered 1978 release, Kaya. The album finds Bob Marley & The Wailers truly capitalizing on their newfound international success with classics like “Is This Love,” “Sun Is Shining,” “Time Will Tell” and “Satisfy My Soul,” hitting #4 on the UK charts in the process. The 10-song set captures Marley and company in a relaxed mood on a spiritual and distinctive collection of love songs, and of course, homages to the power of ganga.

“ABBEY ROAD’S world-renowned engineers have been cutting grooves into discs since the studios first opened their doors in 1931. This record was pressed from a master cut using a precision technique known as half-speed mastering. The procedure requires the source master and the cutting lathe to run at half speed on a specially adapted Neumann VMS-80 lathe.

This rare and specialised technique transforms difficult to cut highend frequencies into relatively easy to cut mid-range frequencies. The result is a cut with excellent high frequency response and very solid and stable stereo images. In short, half-speed mastering produces a master of the highest quality that enables the pressing plant to produce a superlative record.”

In October 1973 Bob Marley and the Wailers gave an intimate performance at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Whilst they performed and recorded twelve classic songs, from the sidelines producer Denny Cordell captured the event on camera.

The footage lay unseen for decades and was long considered lost, until a freelance researcher, sent to archive all things Marley, found a few frames. Intrigued, for over 20 years the trail to track down more of the film led him through storage units and record company archives from New York and London to San Diego until, finally, enough of the precious fragments were assembled. Now, painstakingly restored and edited, the Capitol Session ’73 is ready for release and arguably the finest audio-visual recording of Bob Marley and the Wailers in existence.

At the time, Bob Marley and the Wailers, already huge in the UK, were on tour in support of the locally produced Exodus. While the show starts off with the slow-burning “Trenchtown Rock” (1973’s African Herbsman), Marley’s performance grows increasingly incendiary until, by the time they get to the climactic closer, “Exodus,” it looks as he’s in another world entirely.

The turning point is an extended version of “Crazy Baldhead” (1976’s Rastaman Vibration), in which Marley seemingly enters a trance, performing primarily with eyes closed.

Recorded under the auspices of revolutionary reggae producer Lee “Scratch” Perry, this compilation includes early versions of many of the songs that were later to make Bob Marley and the Wailers internationally famous. Previously a fairly run-of-the-mill Jamaican vocal group, the band were molded by Perry into a rootsy, Rasta-centric outfit. The polite ska rhythm of the ’60s is gone, replaced by upfront rhythm guitar and bass and Carlton Barrett’s exemplary one-drop reggae drumming, and Marley’s vocals are tough and confident. “Small Axe” is a Jamaican proverb shaped to suit the turbulent political times, while “Soul Rebel” is an early manifestation of Marley’s later persona, and “Kaya”‘s bass line is an inspired lift from Glenn Miller’s 1940s big band hit, “Tuxedo Junction”.

Three Highly Lauded and Previously Unreleased Bob Marley & The Wailers Concerts From London’s Rainbow Theatre To Be Released On June 3, 10, And 17. Revised Exodus: Deluxe Edition Releasing June 24.

[LOS ANGELES, CA – JUNE 3, 2022] Beginning today and throughout June, The Marley Family, Island Records, and UMe mark the 45th anniversary of Exodus – named the “Best Album of the 20th Century” by Time magazine in 1999 – with the digital premiere of three of the four nights from Bob Marley & the Wailers’ historic run at London’s Rainbow Theatre and a consolidated, revised digital Exodus:Deluxe Edition.

Following an assassination attempt in Kingston, Jamaica, in December 1976, Bob Marley and his band moved to London – in “exodus” from their home country – and recorded tracks for what became both the Exodus and Kaya albums. Marley’s Exodus, featuring the timeless tracks Jamming, Three Little Birds, One Love/People Get Ready, and the epic title song, came first, which led to early positive reviews, ten early dates around Western Europe and shows at the Rainbow Theatre in London’s Finsbury Park during release week. But an injury to Bob led to the abrupt cancellation of the rest of the Exodus tour, including expected U.S. breakthrough shows scheduled for late summer, leaving June 1-2-3-4 the final performances by the Wailers that year.

Bob Marley and the Wailers (also known as The Wailing Wailers, Bob Marley & the Wailers, and The Wailers) were a Jamaican reggae band led by Bob Marley. It developed from the ska vocal group, The Teenagers, created by Marley with Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer in 1963. By late 1963, singers Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, and Cherry Smith had joined the group. By the early 1970s, Marley and Bunny Wailer had learned to play some instruments, and brothers Aston “Family Man” Barrett (bass) and Carlton Barrett (drums), had joined the band. The line-up was known variously as: The Teenagers, the Wailing Rudeboys, the Wailing Wailers, then Bob Marley and the Wailers, with three albums between 1971 and 1973 credited to The Wailers. After Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh left the band in 1974, Marley continued with new band members which included the Barrett brothers, Junior Marvin and Al Anderson on lead guitar, Tyrone Downie and Earl “Wya” Lindo on keyboards, and Alvin “Seeco” Patterson on percussion. The “I Threes”, consisting of Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths, and Marley’s wife, Rita, provided backing vocals.

Probably the most popular release of Marley live, this concert has been newly remastered! This June 1977 concert at London’s Rainbow Theater captures the recently reconfigured Wailers ending a European tour to promote the Exodus album. The rare performances of “Trenchtown Rock,” “Rebel Music,” and “Crazy Baldhead” from the earlier Wailers repertoire are the treasures of this collection, but the whole thing is simply a “must-have”.

Bob Marley & the Wailers came to London’s Rainbow Theatre in the summer of 1977. The Exodus album was riding the British charts. The band’s potent, magical music was everywhere; on the airwaves, the jukeboxes, the sound system, hi-fi’s. For the first time on recording, Live at the Rainbow captures a moment in time at the height of Bob Marley’s popularity with a digitally enhanced sound, remastered in dolby digital stereo.
