Erik Satie as a source of inspiration for John Cage – Pianist Bertrand Chamayou with his album Letter(s) to Erik Satie.
“Erik Satie and John Cage are UFOs in the music world, because they looked at music through a completely different prism,” pianist Bertrand Chamayou describes his impression. And so the pianist dedicates his solo album Letter(s) to Erik Satie to these two extraordinary composers: “They are pioneers, they changed many people’s idea of what music should be.” In this regard, Erik Satie, a Frenchman born in the mid-19th century, was a source of inspiration for U.S. composer John Cage.

Following his award-winning survey of Ravel’s complete solo piano works, Bertrand Chamayou takes on some of the most brilliant yet fiendishly virtuosic music in the French Romantic repertoire on his new Saint-Saëns album, drawing together the two most famous of the composer-pianist’s five piano concertos – the epic No.2 and the irresistibly exotic No.5 ‘The Egyptian’ – alongside a bouquet of lesser-known solo pieces and études that will delight pianophiles. These include the effervescent yet notoriously difficult Étude en forme de Valse with its breathtaking bravura finale, and the entrancing Les Cloches de Las Palmas inspired by the bells Saint-Saëns heard ringing out in the Canary Islands. ‘I’m always charmed by Saint-Saëns,’ says Chamayou. ‘There’s an attraction to the exotic, the bizarre, sensual fantasy, that’s very curious for a composer that we think of as so academic. And there’s a real sense of voyage in the music of Saint-Saëns that I find fascinating.’ He is joined by the Orchestre National de France and its formidable conductor Emmanuel Krivine for an album that promises fireworks, champagne and just a few puffs of opium.

Hailed ‘the new French prince of the piano’ (Diapason), Bertrand Chamayou also reveals a more intimate side to the great composer-pianist, exploring the hidden charm and secret sensuality of his rarely-heard etudes and solo piano miniatures.

Bertrand Chamayou, described by Gramophone as a “young French pianist of an impeccable pedigree”, is already firmly established as one of the most thoughtful and fascinating pianists of his generation. He has chosen Schubert – with the Wanderer-Fantaisie as the centrepiece – for his first release as an ERATO artist, and, in the course of 2014, the composer’s works will also feature in Chamayou’s recitals in Germany, Belgium, the US (New York), France and Austria.

For his second release on Erato, Bertrand Chamayou is dedicating two CDs to the complete solo piano music of Ravel. “My style of playing and the way I imagine sound can be largely attributed to Ravel,” says Chamayou. “Recording his music is not just a return to my roots, but also a natural stage in my development.” This new set makes a fitting successor to Chamayou’s debut disc for the label: released in early 2014 and devoted to music by Schubert, it was praised by the Sunday Times as an “affecting, beautifully performed disc,” by Pianist magazine for “playing of intellectual conviction paired with a singing tone of heart-breaking beauty,” and by the Telegraph for “playing that radiates a generous Schubertian spirit, thoughtful in its shaping, structurally cohesive, absorbing in a spectrum of pianism that draws you into the music’s expressive heart.”
