This recording is the result of the passion the young musicians Camille Thomas (cello) and Beatrice Berrut (piano) have always felt for Russian music. Whatever its period of composition, they find in this repertoire the profundity and complexity of the Slavic soul, taking to extremes the expression of human torments. Camille Thomas: ‘For this recording we immediately thought of playing Russian music. In A Century of Russian Colours, we start with a very Romantic composition, Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata op.19. The programme continues with a very rarely recorded work, bearing the marks of Soviet communism, showing fear and anguish, but also the rigour and conformism of Dmitry Kabalevsky. We end with a young composer who is very highly thought of in the musical world: Lera Auerbach, one of the last artists to be stripped of Russian nationality, who now lives in the United States and Germany.’

Is transcription betrayal ? Beatrice Berrut does think not. To transcribe is to pay homage to the genius of a music whose essence does not change along with its form, and to reconnect with the universality of nineteenth-century thought. Music must continue to live, for as Mahler is supposed to have said: “Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire” !

‘The meditation, sobriety and modesty of Bach’s music are profoundly moving. In this era when so much importance is granted to appearances, his music remains, pushes us to introspection and raises existential questions that, despite the passage of centuries, remain topical. ‘I have chosen works transcribed by Busoni, Siloti or Kempff, and not that of works written for harpsichord, for their transcriptions hold out a thread between Bach’s era and our modern world.

That is tangible proof of the universality and timelessness of his music: it throws a bridge between men of different centuries. ‘Thierry Escaich’s music also has its roots in Bach’s. So it is that his latest works recall the music of the cantor of Leipzig, whilst strangely tinting it with the colours of the 21st centuries: bouquets of colourful harmonies, wild rhythms, moments of mystical ecstasy… ‘Béatrice Berrut Recognized on the international scene and by her peers asa major artist, for her debut on the Aparté lable, the Swiss pianist Béatrice Berrut gives us a highly intimate vision of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music.

For this, she is accompanied by a Bösendorfer piano prototype and the microphones of Nicolas Bartholomée, set up in the setting of Flagey, a multi-disciplinary arts centre in Brussels.

Athanor. A mysterious name to designate, in alchemy, the long-combustion furnace that produces the philosopher’s stone. This matrix, which symbolises the quest of one who seeks to the Absolute, is a metaphor of Liszt’s approach. With the patience of the alchemist who pursues the perfection of the material, the virtuoso composer and pianist has long matured the genesis of his two Piano Concertos and of the Totentanz: in fact, more than 20 years separate the first sketches of their publication. These three major works are each crossed by a powerfull and captivating leading theme, and driven by a logic of transformation: the Totentanz uses the theme and variations form while the concertos are unifyed by a unique theme that nourishes the whole musical flow through its metamorphoses. Pianist Beatrice Berrut, who was already venturing on the Lisztian paths in her previous record, testifies here to the infinite invention of the composer: she performs the first Concerto with its last variants noted by Liszt himself on the copy of his pupil Hans von Bülow.

At the end of his life, Franz Liszt abandoned the demonstrative style and breathtaking virtuosity which had made him a true “hero” of the piano all over Europe. Dividing his life between Budapest, Rome and Weimar, he remembers his dear Hungary which he carries in his heart and those who have meant so much to him, such as Richard Wagner to whom he has continually attributed his artistic support. Stripped of all artifice, his latest works for the piano are very personal. Beatrice Berrut’s very interior as well as expressive play perfectly matches these “pieces of the end”, miracles of poetry, both sober and suggestive, open to modernity.

In his life as in his work, Liszt’s music represents a stylised struggle between good and evil; light and darkness. His writing, which may at times be described as Manichean, nevertheless explores all the pains and joys that a human soul can experience and creates an unbreakable thread between feelings that are very remote from each other. Liszt s metanoia: his courageous path towards light and serenity, provides a touching and liberating example of a man who assumed his consuming passions and sublimated them in the works he created. An intimate lecture of Liszt’s soul by Swiss pianist Béatrice Berrut. Recorded in Paris by Nicolas Bartholomée on a Bösendorfer piano in April 2016.
