The latest album by Atom String Quartet – “Universum”, is a natural consequence of the band’s activities, and at the same time a completely new approach to composing. Each musician mastered great form and composed a full-scale, multi-part string quartet. These works are autonomous entities and tell different stories, precisely showing the individual character of each composer. “Atomizations” by Dawid Lubowicz talk about the vastness of the universe, are a reflection on the infinity of events, a story about a road that always surprises and never ends. “Varsovia” – Mateusz Smoczyński is a musical record of the heroism of Warsaw and the pain of its inhabitants, interwoven with images of the bustling metropolis of the times. present; “Bolero” by Michał Zaborski tells about dance, passion and love, while “Atlas of Butterflies” by Krzysztof Lenczowski is a musical illustration of a children’s book with drawings and descriptions of butterflies. Stylistically and formally, the songs are close to classical music, i.e. to the natural environment of a string quartet, but they do not lack elements characteristic of Atom String Quartet, such as improvisation or new performance techniques.

It is not new that jazz people sometimes make a foray into chamber music. Solo piano plus string quartet doesn’t really happen that often. What is the appeal of this connection? Let’s look at it this way: When the saxophonist or trumpeter plays their solo in a jazz quartet, the piano gives them a safe, inspiring sound chamber in which they can develop freely. And what does the pianist do if he wants to play in such a sound chamber? The best thing he can do is go on a journey with a string quartet. But, correctly, in this case it is the pianist who went on the journey. Roman Babik traveled to Warsaw with his Bully and was in the studio there for two days with the Atom String Quartet. The result is finally available in this great and very special album.

The pianist Vladyslav Sendecki and the Atom String Quartet release a fascinating jazz album: Le Jardin Oublié is a metaphor for the forgotten, that which is believed to be lost, and the longed for – an inner view that gazes both into the past and the future – even touching fragmentarily on the basic existentialist concepts of being and nonexistence.

Supernova – the second album of the Atom String Quartet recorded with the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra is a kind of summary of the interesting and inspiring two-year collaboration of both ensembles. The album features compositions by members of the Atom String Quartet: Dawid Lubowicz, Mateusz Smoczynski and Michal Zaborski for jazz string quartet and string orchestra, as well as Concerto Rosso – a new piece by Polish composer Hanna Kulenty-Majoor dedicated to ASQ and NFM LO. “Since I have been associated with the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra, I observe (…) the unobvious direction in which this orchestra is going, still looking for something new, something that would allow them to gain his own identity. This direction was largely delineated by the Leopoldinum’s previous artistic director, Ernst Kovacic, who was constantly looking for a new, original repertoire for the orchestra, performing unknown or forgotten pieces, commissioning new works from contemporary composers and creating the unique Leo Festival. (…) The composer, in my opinion perfectly in line with the direction chosen by the orchestra, is Hanna Kulenty-Majoor – a brave, original and charismatic artist whose works we have often performed, also during the Leo Festival. Therefore, when the idea of commissioning a work for the NFM Leopoldinum Orkiestra and Atom String Quartet was born, I had no doubt that we should turn to Hanna Kulenty-Majoor, whose energetic style suits both the Atom String Quartet and NFM Leopoldinum. Music has always developed by mixing different styles, especially in the twentieth century. Maybe a new style is just being created somewhere between improvised and serious music? An improvisatory string quartet opens up the hidden region between classical and jazz, riffing off music from around the world.

Atom String Quartet is both an astonishing classical ensemble and a renowned Polish jazz band. Made up of two violins, viola and cello, the group creates an almost indefinable sound.

They add Polish folk, contemporary and classical to the brew, with refreshingly intriguing results.

Classical music has always provided the best jazz players with a technical and theoretical basis. Many musicians on the current jazz scene, including Shabaka Hutchings, Sarah Tandy and Cassie Kinochi, emerged from a classical background.

Conversely, classical composers down the ages, for example, Ravel, Ligeti, Stravinsky and Mark-Antony Turnage, have drawn significant inspiration from jazz and popular music.

The rich history of jazz and classical feeding into each other to forge a new path was first formalized by the music critic Gunther Schuller under the term ‘third stream’.
