For the first time in the nearly 40-year history of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the saxophone takes center stage this year. This has been made possible by Asya Fateyeva, who over the past decade has brought the instrument from its jazz and pop niche into the classical world, even making it respectable there. She showcases the impressive versatility of her instrument as a portrait artist at the SHMF in 17 concerts in July and August. Her new album “To the Muse” will also be released on May 17, 2024, on Berlin Classics.

The present programme finds lautten compagney undertaking an exciting journey through time, a journey that covers three centuries of musical history. Even in the seventeenth century, England’s most famous Baroque composer, Henry Purcell, was already being hailed as “Orpheus Britannicus”. His style is unique in English music, combining, as it does, memorable melodies with groovy rhythms. This was the pop music of London in the years around 1690. The Beatles’ first single was released in 1962. The group soon became known for its new sound – a combination of rock and roll and Liverpool beat music – and left a decisive mark on the popular culture of the twentieth century. By 1970 it had already been disbanded but by then it had acquired an iconic status throughout the entire world and provided a surface on to which a whole generation of young people in the West could project their messages of protest.

On her first chamber music album for Berlin Classics, saxophonist Asya Fateyeva looks back to the glory days of her instrument: in the Twenties of the last century, the sax was the voice of modern salon music and an equal partner to the other instruments of the classical chamber ensemble. Even as it enjoyed its heyday, dark clouds were gathering on the horizon. This is an album that occupies the territory between danceable urban rhythms, cultural ostracism and groundbreaking developments in music.

On her new album, too, the soloist takes unusual paths. This time she explores the world of carnival, its dramas, characters and surprising human entanglements. The saxophone is an excellent choice for this, says Fateyeva: “The title ‘Carneval’ describes the spirit of the saxophone. It likes to dress up, try out, sound out different styles and slip into the roles of other instruments”.

The Berliner Zeitung wrote about Asya Fateyeva’s second publication “Bachiana” on which she arranged Bach compositions for the saxophone – which did not even exist during Bach’s lifetime – that even purists would become weak.
