Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original analog master tapes to vinyl and PCM. The DSD was sourced from the PCM. George listened to all of the different A/D converters he had before he chose which to use, and he felt the George Massenburg GML 20 bit A/D produced the best and most synergistic sound for the project.

The original master tapes for this title had not been used since 1980 previous to this reissue. Also, for this Analogue Productions reissue the decision was made to master and present this album as it was originally mixed to master tape. With very few exceptions all versions of this title to date, including the original, have had the channels incorrectly reversed. With this version, you’ll hear this title as it was intended to be heard, without the channels reversed. And again, those reissues you’ve heard up until now – definitely still breathy, warm and rich – were made from something less than the master. Prepare to hear the veil removed

Astrud Gilberto says that her husband, Joao, informed Stan Getz that she “could sing at the recording.” Creed Taylor recalls that it took Getz’s wife, Monica, to get both Astrud and Joao into the recording studio; Mrs. Getz had a sense that Astrud could make a hit. And Getz himself is on record saying that he insisted on Astrud’s presence over the others’ objections. So who’s right? What does it matter? The Gilbertos, Getz and the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim followed up the bossa nova success of Jazz Samba with this, the defining LP of the genre. With one of the greatest hit singles jazz has ever known – each one who hears it goes “Ahhh!”

Antônio Carlos Jobim, whose ancestors emigrated from France to Brazil in the 17th century, was born in the Tijuca district and spent his childhood in Ipanema. He learned to play the guitar in early childhood. From the age of 13 he learned to play the piano. He became a pupil of Lúcia Branco, who was considered the best piano teacher in Rio de Janeiro of the forties, and from 1941 Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, who had also taught other great Brazilian composers, was also his teacher.

Expectations run high when a successful producer resigns his post to join a rival company. Things were no different in the case of Creed Taylor who left Verve for A&M, taking along the bossa guru Jobim. This liaison resulted in the album Wave, which Latin specialists regard as one of the most artistic ever, perhaps because Jobim rides the gentlest of waves in this particular recording. While the large instrumental ensemble might lead one to suspect that sensationalism was the aim here, listening to the music proves that Jobim has remained true to his clear melodies and his simple, sensitive style. A relaxed carpet of sound is rolled out which enhances and refines the essence of Jobim’s musical roots, turning them into miniature tone poems.

Urubu is the album that MCA’s Jobim probably aspired to be, a total break away from the bossa nova past that is both ambitious and strikingly original. The shock of dissonant strings, percussive and wind sounds from the Brazilian interior greet us on the first track “Bôto,” the first of four songs in which a defiant Jobim throws structural complexities at us and sings in Portuguese only. The second four tracks are an even more radical departure; all are classical orchestral pieces, melancholy and even anguished in tone, owing little or nothing to anyone, streaked with imaginative, even avant-garde orchestral touches from Claus Ogerman. Clearly we are not on the Ipanema beach anymore, and although this may be rough going for jazz-minded Jobim fans, the pay-off is a glimpse into the depths of Jobim’s soul.

One of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s best-known albums, 1970’s „Tide“ is a companion piece to 1967’s „Wave“, a similarly lush and smooth collection for producer Creed Taylor’s CTI Records. In fact, this album’s lengthy title track is a theme-and-variations exploration of the main melodic line from WAVE’s title track.

Brazilian composer and pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote two of the biggest bossa nova hits ever recorded, Desafinado and The Girl From Ipanema. Most people, however, had no idea of his name or reputation as an architect of bossa nova, hence the cumbersome title of this debut. The album contains instrumental versions of Jobim’s well-known classics including, of course, Desafinado, The Girl From Ipanema, One Note Samba, Chega de Saudade and others, performed by Jobim and a host of American jazz musicians. The arrangements are by Claus Ogerman, who would go on to work with Jobim for decades.

In his first American album, Antonio Carlos Jobim presents a dozen of his songs, each one destined to become a standard — an astounding batting average. Jobim, who claimed to have been out of practice at the time of the session, merely plays single notes on the piano with one hand, punctuated by chords now and then, sticking to his long, undulating melodies with a few passages of jazz improvisation now and then. Yet it is a lovely idea, not a gesture is wasted. Arranger Claus Ogerman unveils many of the trademarks that would define his Creed Taylor-produced albums with Jobim — the soaring, dying solo flute and spare, brooding unison string lines widening into lush harmony; flutes doubling on top of Jobim’s piano chords — again with an exquisitely spare touch. The songs include “Desafinado,” “Corcovado,” “Chega de Saudade” (No More Blues), “The Girl From Ipanema,” “Meditation,” “One Note Samba,” and half-a-dozen others (every one of which is included on The Man From Ipanema set).

Originally released in March of 1964, this legendary collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist Joao Gilberto came at the end of the bossa nova craze Getz had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba. In fact, Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto as his record company didn’t want to compete with their own hit. The album ended up spending 96 weeks on the charts and won four Grammy Awards. Getz/Gilberto remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches the artistic merit.
