Slade is an English glam rock and hard rock band that has existed since 1966. With 21 top twenty hits, six of them number 1, four number 2 and two number 3, they were one of the most successful British bands of the 1970s.

in 1964, guitarist Dave Hill (born April 4, 1946) and drummer Don Powell (born September 10, 1946 as Donald George Powell) founded the group The Vendors together with guitarist Mickey Marston, bassist Dave Jones and singer John Howells. A short time later, the first Dave Hill / John Howells composition “Don’t Leave Me Now” was released in own production. A year later, the band was renamed Die ‘N Betweens, and an EP was produced for the French market. In the spring of 1966, singer and guitarist Noddy Holder (* 15. John Holder (born June 1946 as Neville John Holder) from the band Steve Brett & The Mavericks, who had already founded his first band, the Rockin’ Phantoms, in 1959, which became the Memphis Cut-outs in 1963. Shortly after, the multi-instrumentalist (bass, violin, keyboard) Jim Lea (* June 14, 1949 as James While Lea) joined the ’N Betweens.

At that time the band accompanied the singer Johnny Howells and played rock’n’roll, mainly Chuck Berry and Motown pieces. In April 1966 the group went their own way and Holder took over the vocals. The group gained local notoriety within a few weeks. During a trip to the Tiles Club on Oxford Street in London, the American producer Kim Fowley contacted them. A little later, the single You Better Run (originally by the Young Rascals) was released and became number 1 in the local Wolverhampton charts. However, Kim Fowley soon lost interest in the band, especially since an additionally produced promo single did not receive any attention in the United States.

On May 18, 1968, the band broke up for an eight-week club engagement in the Bahamas. However, their hotel bill was paid by the club only for two weeks, because the hotel owner had changed and they played mainly for the black part of the population, with which their host did not earn money. Therefore, after six weeks, they were presented with a bill for $ 35,000, which the band could not pay. But since the new hotel manager Dan Darrow was quite satisfied with her musical achievements, he still engaged her for an indefinite period to let her pay off her debts. During this time, the ’N Betweens expanded their repertoire considerably and the cohesion of the band was also strengthened. It was not until the end of August that they were able to leave the Bahamas.
