‘Rewind Forward’, the latest EP from drumming legend Ringo Starr, features four new songs from an All-Starr cast of collaborators, including Sir Paul McCartney, Joe Walsh, Steve Lukather, Benmont Tench, Matt Bissonette and Bruce Sugar. With singable melodies, upbeat lyrics, and loads of Peace and Love, this collection is a must-have for any Ringo fan.

The fourth in a series of EPs Ringo Starr has released since the start of the 2020s, Rewind Forward doesn’t offer any surprises. That’s part of its charm. Working with a familiar cast of characters — his old mate Paul McCartney contributes the amiable ramble “Feeling the Sunlight” — Ringo sings about enjoying the present and the past in equal measure, a combination that feels nostalgic without quite succumbing to pandering. Starr dodges this backwards bullet due to his good cheer but also the good fortune of working with former Heartbreakers Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell on “Miss Jean,” a jangly garage rocker that would’ve felt at home on a latter-day Tom Petty record. The rest of Rewind Forward is pleasant, but “Miss Jean” is the best rocker Ringo has cooked up in quite a while. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
