This recording gathers, for the first time the complete original compositions for the organ by Giacomo Puccini (Lucca, December 22, 1858 – Brussels, November 29, 1924), collected and published in 2017 under the guidance of Virgilio Bernardoni in volume II/2.1 of the National Edition of Giacomo Puccini’s Works (Carus-Verlag 56.003).
It is thanks to the musicological efforts of the Giacomo Puccini Study Center in Lucca that, between 2015 and 2017, many of these compositions for the organ resurfaced. They had been scattered across various collections. Altogether, there are 57 pieces composed between 1870 and 1880, during the period when the young music student served as an organist in Lucca and neighboring towns.

Giovanni Battista Viotti was a man of humble origins who studied with Gaetano Pugnani in the tradition of the Corelli school. By the age of 20 he was already an esteemed violinist, performing concerts in Geneva, Bern, Berlin and Saint Petersburg, and he eventually chose to settle in Paris. However, as a court musician for Marie Antoniette, he was forced to flee to London in 1792, where, a short while later, he was accused of spying on behalf of the Jacobins. He returned to Paris and was celebrated during the Restoration period, but eventually came back to London, where he died in poverty. Compositionally he serves as a bridge between the Classical period and the first signs of Romanticism, and he wrote an impressive 29 concertos for his own instrument, the violin. The 22nd, in A minor, shows his renowned compositional intelligence at its peak. Brahms, by no means known for the generosity of his opinions, wrote in a letter to Clara Schumann: “This concerto… is a magnificent piece, of remarkable freedom in its invention; it sounds as if [Viotti] were fantasising, and everything is masterfully conceived and executed”.

Lucia Fodde was born in Sardinia, and from a young age, she had an unrestrained passion for music, taking piano lessons and participating in the church choir, showcasing her extraordinary ability to handle time and melody. She was significantly influencedby her jazz-loving father’s vinyl record collection.
After a stint as a vocalist in the pop scene, Lucia whole heartedly embraced jazz. As a leader, she embarked on projects in jazz trios and quartets, collaborating with various Italian and international artists. Lucia pursued a Jazz course at the prestigious Conservatorio ‘P. Luigi da Palestrina in Cagliari, earning a diploma in “Vocal Jazz.”
Overthe years, Lucia has participated in masterclasses with luminaries such as Sheila Jordan and Rachel Gould, to name a few.

Few things could have prepared society for the global pandemic that gripped the world from 2020-21. From that darkness, however, there emerged numerous avenues for creative reflection. Musicians suddenly had a lot of time on their hands, and an opportunity to develop their art in new and ambitious directions. During this period, Portuguese composer Pedro Faria Gomes, whose imaginative and communicative music combines clear originality with a confident respect for tradition, turned to the piano. His initial idea was to write a variation on two sets of four notes. Faria shared the resulting movement with pianist Kenneth Hamilton, his colleague at Cardiff University School of Music. Hamilton was impressed with the piece, and a plan evolved to compose a more elaborate work. This developed into the ten movement, strikingly thought-provoking Suite J–the ‘J’ refers to Faria’s daughter Joana–recorded for the first time on this disc.

Karstein Askeland studied church music at the Bergen Music Conservatory. He then studied organ performance with Prof. Edgar Krapp at the Academy of Music in Frankfurt am Main, where he played his diploma examination in 1985, and his concert examination two years later.
Askeland played his debut concert at Oslo Concert Hall in 1986. Since then he has performed throughout Europe, and in Russia, the USA, and South America. His concerts have been presented by the Norwegian National Broadcasting Company (NRK) and by several radio channels abroad. He has done significant work for new music through his close co-operation with several important Norwegian composers, premiering a number of new works. His interaction with Ketil Hvoslef has resulted in several commissions, and of course this stunning album of Organ Works!
