Neil Diamond – Lovescape (1991/2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

Neil Diamond – Lovescape (1991/2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 01:00:46 minutes | 2,77 GB | Genre: Pop, Soft Rock, Singer-Songwriter
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Neil Diamond

Lovescape frames Neil Diamond’s typically strong, if a little over-dramatic, vocal style with plinking keyboards, cooing backup singers, and hissing, breathy synthesizers. It’s all drenched in the kind of reverb that screams “lite rock radio sap.” Fortunately, Diamond’s wine-stained voice is still full of emotion and more than capable of closing the album’s gaping holes with a just-right emphasis here and a plaintive growl there. “Mountains of Love”‘s sanitized world beat groove and keening horns would shrivel in anyone else’s hands. But when Neil sings “Come on let’s go/We’ve got room on that mountain of love,” you want to believe in his feed-the-world message and follow him right to the top of the peak (how does he climb in those ankle boots?). A strummed acoustic guitar slows down the Hammond/Warren composition “Don’t Turn Around,” letting it breathe like the classic “Red Red Wine” – Diamond’s take has none of the mechanization of Ace of Base’s later hit version. He has written or co-written 11 of Lovescape’s 15 tracks, and it’s his lilting, bruised heart duet with Kim Carnes that’s the obvious standout. Elsewhere, he covers “One Hand, One Heart” from West Side Story, refueling the ballad with his typical message of unification and peace, and buoys the faint country feel of “When You Miss Your Love” with a deft vocal touch, never letting it drift into dangerous Elton John territory. Although heaping helpings of synthesizer do their worst to slow him down, Diamond does his best with Lovescape’s material, and salvages a handful of memorable moments for longtime listeners or the casual fan.

After two excellent collaborations with Rick Rubin, Neil Diamond can’t resist taking the production reins himself for this collection of (mostly) covers. His liner notes claim these songs as some of his favorites from the “rock era” implying it’s over. While this set is more intimate than most of his overblown production of the last 30 years, it is a step away from the simplicity of his work with Rubin, featuring full strings, chamber reeds, winds, and brass on various cuts. As a vocalist, Diamond’s dramatic rather than involved authority is his trademark; he imposes it on almost every track. It works well here sometimes: the reading of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” is excellent for this reason, more like a playwright’s look than a lover’s. The fiddle in Lennon and McCartney’s “Blackbird” adds warmth to Diamond’s declamatory vocal. Randy Newman’s “Feels Like Home” is a set high point: it so intimate, naked, and desperate uncharacteristic of the ultra-private Diamond it can stop the listener in her tracks; it feels unintentionally included on this collection. The restrained narrative storyteller’s presentation of “Midnight Train to Georgia” is, despite its simple delivery, more empathic than passionate. The reading of Leonard Cohen’s transcendent “Hallelujah” is not definitive by any means, but it best illustrates Diamond’s intention to pay homage to the song it’s an excellent version to add to the bunch that already exists. Lesley Duncan’s “Love Song” (Elton John’s reading on Tumbleweed Connection is the classic) is quietly yet exotically treated with layered acoustic guitars, a spare piano, and King Errisson’s imaginative hand percussion. Harry Nilsson’s “Don’t Forget Me,” which bookends the album, is another high point with a celebratory horn chart underscoring the romantic world-weary irony in Diamond’s delivery. Some tracks just don’t work. Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again (Naturally)” sounds like the maudlin, trite novelty it is. Diamond’s “I’m a Believer” is rendered with far more drama than necessary. Here it’s not an iconic pop song. It comes from the back end of the story illustrated by acoustic guitars, cello, and vibraphone, its joy is displaced by resolve, as if the singer is trying to convince himself the song’s lyrics are true. Like most covers sets, this is a mixed bag, and it’s for the hardcore Diamond fan more than those who admire Home Before Dark, 12 Songs, or his work from the ’60s through the mid-’70s.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 50:58 minutes | 616 MB | Genre: Blues Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Ruf Records GmbH

In 1998, Mike Zito collected the few dollars needed to record his first Blues album in the colours of the city of St Louis: Blue Room. It’s a genre that has lived through poverty, full of rage and electric energy, that seems almost blasphemous and that only fishermen seem to be able to play. Since then, it’s been success after success for the guitarist. Twice nominated for the Blues Music Award and with a dozen albums on his discography, Zito is proud of this first album that radically transformed his life. The re-release of Blue Room celebrates his success from 20 years ago. He enjoys listening to this record as it acts as a flashback to his time of innocence. Opening with a relatively funky number (Hollywood) which is followed by blues-rock riffs on Pull the Trigger, the man who has finally settled in Texas likes to lean on these fatty, rounded notes and powerful chords. His aim: give his listeners an electric shock! Here we find ten tracks including one previously unreleased song; it’s a cover of Elton John’s Rocket Man where electric reverbs bring a flawless eroticism rocked by the crooner’s unique voice. With a frenetic, rhythmic performance and intense groove, the bluesman doesn’t hold back. Blue Room is a landmark album, a childhood memory that relieves the artist of his harder years, reminding him that this first album is proof of his bluesman talent.  – Anna Coluthe

Mathias Eick – Skala (2011) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Mathias Eick – Skala (2011)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 41:41 minutes | 746 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © ECM

Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick’s new album extends the concept and the panoramic sweep of his ECM debut “The Door” (recorded 2007). “It’s wider and bigger in all directions,” Eick says. “Skala” calls upon the services of more musicians – including, at times, two drummers – and there is more detail in the arrangements. What hasn’t changed is the emphasis on the lyrical soloist at the centre of the production. Eick’s elegant trumpet now has a larger space in which to sing.

“Skala” pools new and older compositions, all written by Mathias, and inspired, he says, by music from classical to pop. The title tune is one that the trumpeter says has been following him “for many years”, its network of inspirations including Sting’s 1993 song “Shape of My Heart”. “Edinburgh” was written in the Scottish city, but draws inspiration from Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and the plaintive cry of Jan Garbarek’s sax. Eick describes “June” as “a light and peaceful song, a reminiscence of summer days”. The piece incorporates the harp of classical player Sidsel Walstad, currently of the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra.

“Oslo”, the album’s most propulsive tune, is a “song of the city. It’s a groove-directed piece.” It also “brings the idea of the two drummers into play. It sets them loose.” The piece also includes significant contributions from keyboardist Morten Qvenild, best known for his work with singer Susanna Wallumrød. “Joni” is, of course, for Joni Mitchell, whose work Eick has long admired. “Biermann” is named after the Oslo house that Eick rents, a place once owned by German merchant J. F. Biermann, back in the 19th century. “The Day After” references the 1970s, and is influenced by sources as diverse as the Jarrett/Garbarek ‘Belonging’ collaboration and the pounding rock piano of Elton John. “Epilogue” develops “from the simple idea of softness meeting raw energy”, as Mathias’s tender trumpet soliloquy gives way to typhoon-strength drumming from Torstein Lofthus.

Mongo Santamaria – Afro-Indio (1975/2023) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

Mongo Santamaria – Afro-Indio (1975/2023)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 50:22 minutes | 1,85 GB | Genre: Pop, Latin
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Craft Recordings

Originally released in 1975, this set by master Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria is an exercise in smooth jazz and jazz-funk. Besides its amazing cover by Ron Levine, this disc holds a special place in Santamaria’s catalog. This was the first time he was able to reach his goal of making a large band — in this case, 14 musicians — sound like an intimate combo. “Creepin” kicks it off; it’s an easy-groove number reminiscent of the Crusaders’ slippery moves at the time — think Scratch. “Funk Up,” “Mambomongo,” and “Funk Down” juxtapose Afro-beat, War-style R&B and funk, steamy salsa horns, and just a touch of Jimi Hendrix for a smokin’ raw slice of heated riffing on a theme and two variations. Drummer Bernard Purdie kept the entire band anchored, while saxophonist Justo Almario cuts a mean swathe with his solo in the middle of the track, in the heart of a horn stomp that is unequaled on any of Santamaria’s other records. There’s even a version LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” that has a vocal chorus to back up Almario’s razored saxophone lines; with its Afro-funk backbeat and driving horn section, this one was made for the dancefloor. There is some schlock here, though, in the Joe Gallardo-arranged “Song for You” (not the Bernie Taupin/Elton John tune), a syrupy waste of time and energy with the wimpiest, most anemic flute solo ever recorded (this makes Hubert Laws’ most sentimental moments seem like the theme from Rocky). At seven-and-a-half minutes, this would have been better served on the cutting-room floor. Despite a few dumpy cuts, this one is necessary for fans of classic ’70s soul-jazz and jazz-funk; it’s also of peculiar but pointed interest to those interested in the evolution of Afro-Cuban beat science. – Thom Jurek

Freya Ridings – Blood Orange (2023)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 47:26 minutes | 993 MB | Genre: Pop

Platinum award selling singer-songwriter Freya Ridings returns with an infectious slice of pop perfection on her second album, Blood Orange.

The album’s first single ‘Weekends’ is a dancefloor-ready, string-laden singalong with a touch of Nile Rodgers-style glitterball disco energy to it.

Elsewhere, ‘Blood Orange’ is primarily influenced by Freya’s love of the classic songwriters of the ‘70s: Carole King, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac. And while there are some modernistic production touches, the core of the sound is the organic warmth of live instrumentation: the acoustic guitars, the exuberant handclaps, the rousing brass and – of course – that voice.

Last week, the 55th Montreux Jazz Festival wrapped up in Switzerland. Started in 1967 by Claude Nobs, Geo Voumard and Rene Langel, the yearly festival was at first true to its name and focused exclusively on jazz performers. However, over the years, it has grown to encompass nearly all types of music and has seen a wide range of performers including Etta James, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Lauren Hill, Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, James Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Leonard Cohen, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and many more. It has also proven to be a popular recording spot with nearly 100 albums documenting the numerous concerts. Adding to that album legacy, earlier this year BMG kicked off The Montreux Years series, featuring volumes devoted to an artists’ time at Montreux. The first two featured Nina Simone and Etta James. Now, the next two volumes have been announced and are devoted to Marianne Faithfull and Muddy Waters. The Faithfull entry spans concerts from 1995 to 2009 while the Waters album chronicles shows from 1972 to 1977. Both will be available in CD and 2-LP editions as well as digitally. They are each due on September 17.

Captured at the peak of T. Rextasy, ‘Born To Boogie’ is the Ringo Starr-directed 1972 film of the Godfather of Glam, Marc Bolan on Blu-Ray for the first time. Featuring live versions of T. Rex’s greatest hits, recorded at their famous Wembley concerts, the film also includes a legendary jam session with T.Rex joined by Ringo Starr and Elton John, and a mad hatter’s tea party with Catweazle and (Bolan/Bowie producer) Tony Visconti. The package also features the full matinee show as well as several extra features in SD. With new annotation by Mark Paytress and previously unpublished Keith Morris photos, ‘Born To Boogie’ is the ultimate film of Marc Bolan and superstardom in the early 1970s.
Born to Boogie consists of concert footage; recording studio scenes with Ringo Starr and Elton John, filmed at the Apple Studios in Savile Row, London;[citation needed] and various vignettes reminiscent of The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour, shot at Denham and Tittenhurst Park, Sunninghill. The Tea Party sequence was filmed at John Lennon’s estate in the same spots as Lennon’s “Imagine” video was filmed. The actor Geoffrey Bayldon of Catweazle fame was bemused to find that things were not going to plan when he arrived to play his role as a waiter at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Scene. The planned orchestra had to mime as the whole thing had not been planned too well.
