Ottoman Splendours explores the music shared along an axis that stretches through time and space, linking Asia Minor and the modern-day Balkans to the Medieval Iberian Peninsula. Constantinople/Istanbul, Smyrna/ Izmir, Andrinople/Edirne, Thessaloniki/Selanik, Monastir/Bitola, Sarajevo/Saraybosna… these are the principal sources that connect the music of the Ottoman era to Toledo, Cordoba, Granada, and Seville, which the Sephardim were forced to flee following the Reconquista, but whose legacy is preserved through Judeo-Spanish (spoken vernacular), Ladino (semi-sacred language), and related anonymous poetic repertoires or sacred texts.

Lloyd’s recording titled Oriental Jazz, produced in the 1960s, has become a much sought after collectors’ item. He is currently popular in Europe and the UK and continues to create jazz and oriental music blends. He can play 100 instruments in 15 jazz, ethnic and world music traditions. Lloyd Miller received a doctorate in Middle East Studies: Persian, concentrating on Persian music with a minor in music (jazz.) In 1970 Miller was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to return to Iran to research and complete his dissertation soon after was published by Rutledge Curzon under the title “Music and Song in Persia.”

Latvian Radio Choir’s new album conducted by Sigvards Klava marks the international debut of composer Alfred Momotenko (b. 1970). Momotenko was born in Lviv, Ukraine, in 1970. He studied at the Sochi College of Arts and later percussion at the Moscow State University of Culture and Art. In 1990, the political situation having changed, Momotenko moved to the Netherlands where he continued his studies at the Brabant Conservatory and at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague. Momotenko’s timeless choral works continue the centuries old great tradition of choral works combining them with contemporary language, a blend most recently exemplified by the likes of Alfred Schnittke. Surrounded by choral music in his youth, Momotenko has returned to the world of choral music at a relatively late period: all the works on this album have been written between 2017 and 2022. Many of his enigmatic choral works are religious and could be described as poems or chants – larger than a miniature but less extensive than a fantasy, a narrative, a ballad or a story. Often there are two contrasting musical languages that are present: the ancient, pristine Znamennyj Chant and the modern one. Besides liturgic texts, Momotenko’s choral works include settings to poems by Boris Pasternak and Joseph Brodsky. The largest work, Na Strastnoy (On the Passion), is a companion piece Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil.

Brahms is famous for his symphonies and grand concertos. But many Brahms-lovers would argue he shines brightest in chamber works. And indeed, there is almost no work of Brahms’ that did not start out as chamber music, including his Serenade No.1, which began life as a nonet. It is presented here by the Linos Ensemble in its reconstructed original form. For his second Serenade, Brahms stuck with the chamber orchestra-sized ensemble from the get-go. Clara Schumann approved: “What could I possibly tell you about the Adagio? I feel as if there were no words for the sheer joy that this piece brings me. It’s marvelously beautiful!”

These are truly original pieces, very personal, closer to contemporary and improvised music than to ethnic music.The recordings began in autumn 2019 in Laurent Pernice’s studio. Dominique Beven improvised a series of tunes, under the direction of the composer, during three different sessions distributed over time. The sound recordings were then re-arranged, mixed and electronically manipulated by Laurent Pernice to produce the final pieces to be submitted to Anima Motrix Company. The album ” Le Corps utopique”, which is Laurent Pernice’s 18th album, was released by ADN Records, a label based in Milan (Italy) and run since 1983 by people who are passionate about new, industrial and or improvised music. Since the beginning, they have shown a strong interest in deviant French music, publishing Pascal Comelade, Pierre Bastien, and DDAA… All the sessions recorded by Laurent Pernice and Dominique Beven have been gathered on this album.
