Louis Lortie, Hélène Mercier – Debussy: Piano Duets (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:21:24 minutes | 1,05 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Chandos
Regular duet and two-piano partners, Hélène Mercier and Louis Lortie have returned to the studio for this all-Debussy programme. The album features duets written by the composer himself – such as the Petite Suite, the Six Épigraphes antiques, and the Marche écossaise sur un thème populaire, as well as a number of arrangements of his solo piano pieces (the Première Arabesque, La Fille aux cheveux de lin, and the Ballade slave). The album ends with André Caplet’s monumental arrangement of Debussy’s best-known orchestral work, La Mer. Stripping the work of its orchestral colours, this two-piano version allows the listener to appreciate more easily Debussy’s ground-breaking harmonic innovation. The album was recorded in the concert hall at Snape Maltings, in Suffolk, using a pair of Bösendorfer 280 VC grand pianos.

Lea Birringer, Hofer Symphoniker, Hermann Bäumer – Sinding: Violin Concerto in A Minor, Op. 45, Romance in D Major Op. 100 – Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64 (2022)

Lea Birringer’s first concerto recording is a fascinating combination of the well known with a delightful concerto that does not deserve the obscurity to which it has been consigned.Christian Sinding (1856-1941) composed his concerto 1898. It proved a great success, so its neglect today is difficult to understand. It is certainly demanding on the soloist, but also flatters them. Full of memorable tunes and with brilliant use of the orchestra, this is a cleverly constructed work that deserves to be better known. The later Romance published in 1910 is a wonderfully tender, romantic piece similar to those by Bruch or Dvořák. Mendelssohn’s evergreen concerto of 1845 occupies a place in the pantheon of great violin concertos. It was to be his last orchestral composition (a 3rd piano concerto remained unfinished), and represents perfection – playing without a break, it has many surprises, not least the entry of the soloist after a bar of accompaniment.

Marek Pędziwiatr has been part of the scene for over a decade now. He has gained recognition thanks to projects such as EABS and Błoto & Jaubi. Still, he has never emphasized his name through the prism of these bands, betting instead on collective work. The time has come now for Marek to present his debut album entitled Marianna, featuring him alone as Latarnik performing in a piano solo formula.

Pierre Colin, a great unknown. The archives of the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna contain a large folio (Bol SP A 48) devoted to masses that were clearly used frequently in the cathedral. Composers are not credited, but a study of the source shows that there are more works by Pierre Colin than by any other composer; four of his masses were copied here for use in the cathedral during the third quarter of the 16th century. The same is true of the archives of the cathedrals of Treviso, Toledo and even Guatemala City, which possess manuscript copies taken from printed originals of the masses and motets of a composer who seems to have spent his entire musical career in the Burgundian city of Autun. Who is this composer? How does one account for such success? How did he fit into the musical world of his day? What is distinctive about his style? These are questions we will try to answer in order to shed light on some of the works presented here.

A pianist with a great temperament and overwhelming musicality, Loredana Brigandì is a virtuoso who unites excellent interpretative elegance with an extraordinary technique that allows her to navigate the greatest difficulties of the keyboard.
As a precocious talent, she approached the study of the piano at the age of six. At nine was admitted to the Conservatory “F. Cilea” in Reggio Calabria, which she attended until 1979. She then moved to Rome where she graduated in 1982 from the Conservatory of “S.Cecilia” with full marks under the guidance of Francesco Martucci, a pupil of the great Napoleatan teacher Vincenzo Vitale.
She specialized with Sergio Perticaroli, in both Rome and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and with Maria Curcio in London. During the years of specialization, she simultaneously carried out an intense concert and didactic activity, having been assigned the Chair of Piano at the “F. Cilea” Conservatory of Reggio Calabria at the age of nineteen, and the invitation to hold several Masters Classes.

Lucile Boulanger – Bach & Abel: Solo (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 01:30:35 minutes | 3,00 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Alpha Classics
This is Lucile Boulanger’s first solo recital. The French gambist, universally praised for her natural and moving playing – BBC Music Magazine even described her as ‘the Jacqueline du Pré of the viola da gamba’ – juxtaposes Bach with Carl Friedrich Abel, a great master of the bass viol and a close friend of the Bach family. Although Johann Sebastian never wrote for solo viola da gamba, we know that he transcribed many of his works for other instruments. So Lucile Boulanger has chosen, for example, to transcribe three dances from the Sixth Suite, ‘because it sounds particularly good on the viol, being written for five-stringed cello (a step towards the six or seven strings of the viol?). It is in D, the viol key par excellence, and its style, already somewhat galant , is reminiscent of Abel… This album gives me the opportunity to showcase the viol as both a melodic instrument – with the grain of the bow, the fragility of tone – and a polyphonic one.’

Louis Chedid’s repertoire revisited in piano-voice!
Louis Chedid is back with a project that revisits his repertoire in piano-voice with Yvan Cassar, pianist, conductor and arranger of genius (Johnny Hallyday, Claude Nougaro, Mylène Farmer, Roberto Alagna, Charles Aznavour). On this album, Yvan Cassar multiplies the sound worlds: the songs are wrapped in all the sensations that the piano can provide. From Ainsi soit-il to Les Absents ont toujours tort, the songs balance on the edge of emotion. Intense and light. As if it were the first time. Louis Chedid talks about it: “I tend to compose my songs on the guitar, and the idea of hearing them arranged on the piano by such a virtuoso attracted me straight away. I’m a complete autodidact and he, apart from his way of playing his instrument and arranging the songs, is an outstanding technician who is totally open to the world of composers. We couldn’t help but agree.
Includes his greatest hits and an unreleased track.

Lisa Bodnar and Whistlegrass – 40 Years in the Desert (2022)

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Deko Entertainment
For fans of Wilco, War on Drugs and Tom Petty! The perfect storm of Lisa’s musical career came together in the late 1990s and early 2000s locally and in Philadelphia, where she was a featured artist on WXPN. Her debut, Maybe I Did, was released in 2003 to instant acclaim and even charted on college and Triple-A radio. In the mid-2000s, Lisa relocated to the New York area, where she recorded 2007’s glossier Come Hell or High Water. The sophomore set fared even better, garnering four Grammy nominations (Best New Artist; Best Pop Vocal Album; Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical; and Producer of the Year) and winning praise in the music and mainstream press. “Bodnar sings with an undefeated strength of spirit in a voice that soars with hope and passion,” writes Dave Howell of The Morning Call And now, after 12 years of steady gigging that’s included slots with Vapors of Morphine and other top acts, Lisa has reemerged with 40 Years in the Desert, a sparser, rawer affair than either of it’s predecessors. The album’s title was inspired by a transformative trip to Joshua Tree National Park in California, with stand out tracks “Feeding Time,” a haunting, mid-tempo burner, the twangy, country-pop ballad “Best That I Can”, and “I Love You Friend” an upbeat, mariachi-flavored gem that captures. Lisa is scheduled for a 60+ date tour starting in the fall and will stretch into 2023 covering all counties in her home state of Pennsylvania.
