2013 Van Cliburn Gold Medalist, Vadym Kholodenko, has twice given suberb solo recitals in the Series. This time, we welcome him back with his longstanding duo partner, renowned violinist Alena Baeva.
Their programme starts in the land of make-believe. Schumann’s Fairy Tale Pictures is a work of four distinct movements, though Schumann gives no clue in the score as to which tales, or which fairy happenings, he had in mind for each one. Schubert’s Fantasie in C major for violin and piano stands out for the virtuosity that it asks of both instruments. Based around a simple song melody yet highly complex, it is a joyful piece with a wonderful celebratory finish.
Following the interval, Vadym performs Schubert’s ‘Wanderer Fantasy’ for solo piano. So called for its many connections to his ‘Der Wanderer’ lied, the work’s beautiful melodies and intricate themes conceal treacherous technical demands. And to end, we are back with make-believe. Le Baiser de la Fée is a one-act ballet that Stravinsky wrote as homage to Tchaikovsky. He later made an orchestral version and also a transcription for violin and piano alone. It is with this that Alena and Vadym close tonight.

This recording by the Swiss soprano Franziska Heinzen, accompanied by the pianist Benjamin Mead, is on the one hand a declaration of love to Franziska Heinzen’s home canton of Valais, and on the other hand a homage to the art of Swiss song: the starting point is the song cycle “Lieder us um Tal” (1981) by Eugen Meier on Valais German poems by Hannes Taugwalder (1910-2007), which is thematically expanded with selected songs by Swiss composers of the last two centuries.

On February 2, 2024 the Steinway & Sons label is pleased to release Ailbhe’s McDonagh’s recording of Bach’s Complete Solo Cello Suites (STNS 30232). As Ailbhe writes in her program notes, “Bach’s Cello Suites are some of the most beautiful, challenging, and complex works composed for the instrument. Bach’s ability to create counterpoint on a solo instrument is astounding. He really makes the cello sound like an orchestra rather than just one instrument. Composers the world over (myself included) have been inspired by him to compose solo suites for the cello. The variety of characters, moods, rhythmic interest and phrase structure heard in these suites keep the performer engaged and eager to perform these works over and over again.

The paths of the soloist can often be lonely, especially for one of the most outstanding instrumental soloists like Felix Klieser. All the greater is the joy when closer artistic and human connections are formed through many years of playing together. Felix Klieser’s concerts with the Prague based Zemlinsky Quartet are therefore his favourite of the year, because after countless performances together, the five have long since bonded more than a purely musical community. “I have played a lot with the Zemlinsky Quartet and we really wanted to record a programme together. ”What could be better suited for this than Mozart and Haydn? With arrangements of Haydn’s horn concertos, Mozart’s horn quintet and four Mozart arias, Felix Klieser and the Zemlinsky Quartet present a varied and rousing programme.

“Assisted by the Fenkell Avenue Baptist Church Congregation & Choir” might seem like an odd addendum for Reverend Lee Jackson’s 1971 release “At Calvary,” as congregations aren’t often billed as performers on records. But the stray, echoing hums of churchgoers, calling out in testimony in concert with Jackson during this sermon, render mention of the members of the church necessary.

This recording marks the beginning of the collaboration between the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and its new music director, the French conductor Alain Altinoglu, who conducts the leading European and American orchestras and has made a reputation for himself in every repertory – not forgetting opera at Salzburg, Bayreuth, and La Monnaie in Brussels, where he is music director. Their first disc pays tribute to a composer whose bicentenary is celebrated in 2022, César Franck, with the famous Symphony in D minor and two less well-known works, presented in new editions: the symphonic poem Le Chasseur maudit (1882) and the large-scale symphonic interlude from the oratorio Rédemption, composed in 1872 after the Paris Commune, performed here in its first version, long considered lost.

Founded in 2005, the Feininger Trio has dedicated itself to the intense, prolonged study of the piano trio. This release finds the ensemble navigating the works of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, two figures intimately associated with musical impressionism. Debussy wrote his Piano Trio in G Major at the young age of 18, and the piece abounds with the sonic surprises and experimentations indicative of a blossoming composer. In contrast, Ravel’s Piano Trio in A Minor demonstrates the artful considerations of sonority and balance of a composer well into his career. Also included in this release is Debussy’s playful Petite Suite for 4 Hand Piano, arranged for piano trio by David Riniker.
