Under the Radar is proud to announce Covers of Covers, which is the magazine’s first ever album. In honor of our 20th anniversary we approached some of our favorite musicians and asked them to cover any song by any artist who had been on the front or back cover of our print issue over the years. Covers of Covers is due out March 4, 2022 via American Laundromat, but today we are sharing two of its tracks: Grandaddy’s cover of Metric’s “Blindness” and EMA’s cover of Modest Mouse’s “Trailer Trash.” The album also features Cassandra Jenkins, Alex Lahey, Peter Bjorn and John, Hatchie, Nation of Language, Cults, Kevin Drew, Black Belt Eagle Scout, Sondre Lerche, Girl Ray, Piroshka, Strand of Oaks, Oceanator, C Duncan, NZCA LINES, Ora the Molecule, James Yorkston, and Water From Your Eyes. Buckcherry make a return to the hard rock spotlight with their latest effort, Warpaint. Filled with a plethora of meaty headbangers and a few softer moments, the album attempts to take the band back to their mid-late 2000s glory days, for better and for worse. Produced by Mike Plotnikoff, you can definitely hear elements of their early sound coming into play. Big guitars and hard-hitting drums surround frontman Josh Todd’s raspy vocals on just about every track. However, you can hear new elements and influences peaking their way through as well. The three-song arc of “The Alarm,” “No Regrets” and “The Hunger” bring in a sort of country-tinged sound to the band’s bluesy hard rock.

Radio City is the 1974 follow up to Big Star’s debut, #1 Record. The critically acclaimed, Memphis-based band is often credited with creating the power pop sound, and has become a cult favorite over the years. Remastered from the analog stereo masters, this reissue will allow fans to appreciate Radio City as a standalone CD—this is the first time in many years that the CD version of the album will be sold independently of #1 Record. Packaging includes new liner notes penned by R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, who cites Big Star as one of his biggest influences.

One half of Big Star’s songwriting duo, Chris Bell, made the decision to leave the band following the 1972 release of #1 Record, which left Alex Chilton at the helm as primary songwriter on album number two. Chilton was able to use this opportunity to shine and prove himself to be an incredible songwriter on his own. Journalists noticed: bearing a tongue-in-cheek title, Radio City garnered rave reviews and produced several cult favorites, including “September Gurls,” which has been covered by everyone from The Bangles to Superdrag.

In his liner notes, Mike Mills writes, “On Radio City, Chilton confirms his place as one of the best songwriters in rock and roll. While ‘September Gurls’ may be the best-known song from this album, every other song here is one that I wish I’d written.”

Drive-By Truckers – Welcome 2 Club XIII (2022) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

On the title track to Welcome 2 Club XIII, Drive-By Truckers pay homage to the Muscle Shoals honky-tonk where founding members Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley got their start: a concrete-floored dive lit like a disco, with the nightly promise of penny beer and truly dubious cover bands. “There were no cool bars in town and Club XIII was the best we had—but it wasn’t all that good, and our band wasn’t particularly liked there,” says Hood, referring to the vocalist/guitarists’ former band Adam’s House Cat. “From time to time the owner would throw us a Wednesday night or let us open for a hair-metal band we were a terrible fit for, and everyone would hang out outside until we were done playing. It wasn’t very funny at the time, but it’s funny to us now.” The 14th studio album from Drive-By Truckers—whose lineup also includes keyboardist/guitarist Jay Gonzalez, bassist Matt Patton, and drummer Brad Morgan—Welcome 2 Club XIII looks back on their formative years with both deadpan pragmatism and profound tenderness, instilling each song with the kind of lived-in detail that invites bittersweet reminiscence of your own misspent youth.

Thank You Friends: Big Star’s Third Live…and more celebrates the musical legacy of one of rock’s most influential bands – Big Star – and their legendary THIRD album. Experience this classic of late ’70s power pop through the prism of a collective of immensely talented fans, including members of Wilco, R.E.M., Yo La Tengo, and, of course, Big Star.
Following the untimely death of Alex Chilton two days ahead of Big Star’s SXSW performance in 2010, famous friends and fans came from far and wide to play the gig in his honor. Much of that spontaneous ensemble, along with other musical titans, assembled at Glendale, CA’s ALEX Theatre in April 2016 to record and film an epic performance.

While the band may not be Big Star per se, the fabled group’s sole surviving original member, Jody Stephens, heads an amazing cast, whose membership includes latter-day Big Star alumni Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of the Posies, R.E.M’s Mike Mills, Let’s Active’s Mitch Easter, Chris Stamey of the dB’s, and others.

Jeff Tweedy and Pat Sansone of Wilco, Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, Robyn Hitchcock, Dan Wilson of Semisonic, Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Jessica Pratt, Brett Harris, Django Haskins, and Skylar Gudasz are among the guests who were joined by a full chamber orchestra helmed by the Kronos Quartet, performing scores created directly from the original multi-track tapes from Ardent Studios for this event. Carl Marsh, who wrote the original orchestrations, conducted.

Barenaked Ladies – Are Me: Deluxe Edition 5.1 (2006) [DVD-Audio ISO]

Barenaked Ladies – Are Me: Deluxe Edition 5.1
Artist: Barenaked Ladies | Album: Are Me | Style: Rock, Pop Rock | Year: 2006 | Quality: DVD-Audio (MLP 5.1 88.2kHz/24Bit, MLP 2.0 88.2kHz/24Bit, Dolby AC3 5.1 48kHz/16Bit, Dolby AC3 2.0 48kHz/16Bit) | Bitrate: lossless | Tracks: 13+16 | Size: 4.14 + 5.37 Gb | Recovery: 3% | Covers: in archive | Release: Desperation Records (9-43289), 2006 | Note: Not Watermarked

Continuing in the mature, reflective vein of 2003’s Everything to Everyone, the Barenaked Ladies’ seventh studio album Barenaked Ladies Are Me features more of the band’s trademark wit and melodic folk-rock. Never straying too far afield from the formula they’ve been using ever since their breakthrough 1998 album Stunt, Barenaked Ladies are true torchbearers for the post-R.E.M., post-Smiths sound that shares much in common with such bands as Beautiful South, They Might Be Giants and even Sloan. Once again, lead vocal duties are largely split between Steven Page and Ed Robertson although both pianist/guitarist Kevin Hearn and bassist Jim Creeggan take the lead here on their original tunes “Vanishing” and “Peterborogh and the Kawarthas,” respectively. Interestingly, these tracks, along with Hearn’s “Sound Of Your Voice”, are some of the best on the album with both musicians displaying a true knack for writing heartfelt, literate and tuneful songs about leaving those you love, whether they are your wife or young son. Elsewhere, the band’s gift for mixing the humorous and the poignant is evident on such eminently catchy tracks as “Bank Job,” “Bull in a China Shop’,” and “Rule the World with Love.” For a band 16 years into its career, it’s great to hear an album so full of sparkling, positive-minded songcraft and thoughtful revelations.
