In the 1950s and 60s, the blues was the dominant form of Black vernacular music throughout Texas and the surrounding areas. In segregated neighborhoods, community members gathered in saloons, dancehalls, and each other’s homes to hear their neighbors sing their stories of sorrow, heartbreak, jubilation, and triumph. Robert “Mack” McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee of the blues, stepped into this world and became one of its most devout advocates and documentarians. By photographing Black and Latino Texans and their neighborhoods, as well as recording and interviewing musicians, many of whom never stepped foot into a proper recording studio, McCormick endeared and eventually embedded himself into these communities. By the time he died in 2015, McCormick had amassed a collection of 590 reels of sound recordings and 165 boxes of manuscripts, original interviews and research notes, thousands of photographs and negatives, playbills, and posters. Because McCormick never published or released most of these materials, his collection became a thing of legend and intense speculation among scholars, blues aficionados, and musicians alike. ‘Playing for the Man at the Door: Field Recordings from the Collection of Mack McCormick, 1958-1971′ is the first compilation of music drawn from this fabled collection, which indelibly documents a pivotal moment in African American history. It features never-before-heard performances not only from musicians who became icons in their own right, including Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb, but also, crucially, performers whose names may be unfamiliar to even the most devoted blues fans and scholars. Newly mastered recordings and accompanying photographs bring to life many of these forgotten figures: offering insight into their lives and illuminating in new, enlightening ways their joys and anguish, deep social connections, distinctive voices, and cultural networks. The collection spans gospel, ragtime, country blues dirges, the unclassifiable music of George “Bongo Joe” Coleman, and more, showing that no community, no matter how tight knit, is monolithic. Accompanying the music is a 128-page book, which contains breathtaking photographs by McCormick and his associates, as well as contextual essays by producers Jeff Place and John Troutman on McCormick’s life, and by musicians Mark Puryear and Dom Flemons on some of the marginalized communities throughout “Greater Texas” to which McCormick devoted his life’s work. This release is a partnership with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Massachusetts metallers KILLSWITCH ENGAGE will release their new album, “Atonement”, on August 16 via Metal Blade Records. “‘Unleashed’ is about inner passion and rage coming up to the surface,” said singer Jesse Leach. “We all have that wild within that often stays dormant until a tragic event triggers and awakens it. This song is about that awakening within. I feel we were able to capture something raw and intense on this song and I’m stoked for everyone to hear it! The new album ‘Atonement’ is a reflection of perseverance and passion through the trials and suffering of our existence.” The elaborate illustration on the “Atonement” album cover was created by none other than talented U.K.-based artist Richey Beckett (METALLICA, MASTODON) with the band’s own Mike D’Antonio handling art direction and layout duties. “Atonement” features guest appearances by the band’s former lead singer Howard Jones and TESTAMENT frontman Chuck Billy. It marks the band’s third full-length release since the return of Leach, who rejoined the group in 2012.

Set one of New Year’s Eve proper features a range of Umphrey’s tunes: look for massive improv vehicle “Ocean Billy,” prog-monster “Wizard Burial Ground,” and the debut of dance-anthem “Bad Friday,” which featured the return of Mad Dog’s Filthy Little Secret and Jeff Coffin. The horns resurfaced and joined the band for much of set two, including a “40’s Theme”, “Booth Love,” and the debut of the Phil Collins hit “Sussudio.” As the NYE run nears, the question always circles amongst fans, “What will the band play for the ball drop?” 2013’s “Hurt Bird Bath” did not disappoint as the energy mounted to a pinnacle at midnight . Keeping with tradition, midnight brought a heartfelt but rocking rendition of “Auld Lang Syne,” complete with confetti and fantastic balloon drop. Appropriately, “Hit It and Quit It” by Funakdelic was the first song played in 2014, all setting up for the grand finale encore, “Resolution.” Another fantastic New Years Run is in the books! Some nights defy explanation. Umphrey’s 2014 return to Red Rocks could be summed up as such a night. Their first sold out show at the nation’s premiere amphitheatre created a palpable pre-show energy that never relented. Those in attendance clearly knew they were in for a ride.
The band stepped on the gas early and never let up. Set one started with the debut of a new original “Lucid State.” “Conduit” got the early treatment and “Ocean Billy” lit up the rocks, complete with “Gents” sandwiched neatly in the middle. Jake Cinninger unveiled a treat as he performed “End of the Road” on Jerry Garcia’s historic Travis Bean TB500 guitar. The band closed the set with Bob Seger’s “Hollywood Nights” which turned into a crowd sing along, 9500 voices strong.
“Little Gift,” from the band’s most recent album Similar Skin, set the stage for a relentless set two. Hometown favorite Dominic Lalli from Big Gigantic joined in on saxophone, adding a welcomed layer to the always reliable “Bad Friday.” A monstrous “Wappy Sprayberry” officially quelled any doubts that this show wouldn’t be one for the books. The encore gave the fans one more fulfilling taste of what they came for, as it featured UM in full stride alongside members of The Motet for a fun and upbeat cover of The Band’s “Ophelia.”
Filmed in stunning HD, including aerial drone footage of the concert, paired with crisp soundboard audio make this one of the finest concert videos from UM to date. (more…)

DR Analysis | Full LP Artwork | First US Pressing
Genre: Soundtrack | Atlantic Records ~ 81261-1-E

St. Elmo’s Fire is a 1985 coming-of-age film directed by Joel Schumacher. The film, starring Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham, is a prominent movie of the Brat Pack genre, and revolves around a group of friends that have just graduated from Georgetown University and their adjustment to their post-university lives and the responsibilities of encroaching adulthood.
The theme song “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion)” was written by Canadian composer/producer David Foster and performed by John Parr. This hit song was written for the Canadian athlete Rick Hansen who, at the time, was traveling around the world via his wheelchair to raise awareness for spinal cord injuries. His journey was called the “Man in Motion Tour.” The song did not appear on any John Parr album until Letter to America was released in July 2011.
“St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion)” hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for two weeks in September 1985, and “Love Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire” (the instrumental theme to the movie by David Foster) reached #15. Another version of the “Love Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire” with lyrics, titled For Just a Moment was performed by Amy Holland and Donny Gerrard, and was included as the final song on the soundtrack album.
A note about the scans: the labels of my copy were misprinted, or actually, not printed. They are just blank Atlantic Records labels with no text printed anywhere on them. I didn’t scan them for this reason. However, the covers are included.
