Taking their name from a Thelonious Monk quote, I Like To Sleep are three young Norwegian musicians, all 22 years old. Nicolas and Øyvind first met in high school in Trondheim before they joined up with Amund in a youth big band. It soon became apparent that they shared the same musical background centered around 70s progressive rock, classical music, jazz and improvisation. Soon after the trio was formed, first for fun, but soon with higher ambitions, they won the prestigious “Young Jazz Musicians of the Year” award in 2018. “Daymare” is the trio ́s second album, their debut was released on the small All Good Clean Records label in 2017. While their debut showed a lot of quality and promise, their new effort is a huge step forward on all accounts, especially considering their young age.

For over four years, the collective ensemble and de facto workshop known as Hush Point has been developing a unique approach to jazz performance. The quartet of trumpeter John McNeil, saxophonist Jeremy Udden, bassist Aryeh Kobrinsky and drummer Anthony Pinciotti have used rehearsal techniques to broaden their expression and develop a sort of group ESP. This work has produced brilliant compositions that require a high level of musicianship and group interplay. Hush Point’s evolution can be heard on their innovative third recording, Hush Point III.

For as long as technology allows lower frequencies to be presentable in a clean, somewhat audible manner, the war for the heaviest guitar tone and hugest kit will continue to be waged with sticks, stones, and bass strings. A desire to be dynamic and musically invigorated will continuously be replaced by the need to sap the life of genre pioneers until 7 octaves below middle C becomes progressive metal’s sweetspot. Whether or not this is perceived to be a progression or the advent of regressive metal is outside of the question; if they could make it heavy, could we make it heavier？ Few are as involved and understanding of this auditory dong measuring contest than Humanity’s Last Breath. While these gents can certainly navigate their instruments, it seems that all that low end is messing with their perception of individuality.

Having been disturbing the musical world since 2009 in Helsingborg, Sweden, Humanity’s Last Breath released Ep’s Reanimated By Hate in 2010 and Structures Collapsein 2011, their self titled debut album was unleashed on the world in 2013. Taking things a little slower, 2016 EP Detestor continued the punishing before single ‘Abyssal Mouth’ was released in 2017 and allowed the time until Abyssalwas ready to destroy with its huge sounding, sadistic feeling and utterly terrifying extreme sound.

Champaign, Illinois rock band Hum have surprise-released their first new album in over 22 years: Inlet is the group’s follow-up to January 1998’s Downward Is Heavenward.
Hum—the quartet of Matt Talbott, Tim Lash, Jeff Dimpsey, and Bryan St. Pere—released four albums during their original run from 1991 to 1998. The band is best known for the 1995 hit “Stars.” Hum broke up in 2000 and, prior to the release of Inlet, sporadically reunited for concerts and tours.
The new album is an eight-track release that should appease fans of the band’s ’90s output. Highlights include the album opener “Waves,” the hypnotically epic “Desert Rambler,” the dark yet crushing “The Summoning” and the slow ebbing closer “Shapeshifter.”

Hideo Shiraki Quintet + 3 Koto Girls – Sakura Sakura (1965/2016)

Adulated in his native Japan, drummer Hideo Shiraki led the most famous Japanese jazz group of the early 60’s. His combining jazz and traditional Japanese music brought him an invitation to the 1965 Berlin Jazz Festival and a record date. Three women playing Koto, the traditional Japanese stringed instrument, accompanied the quintet. The results: world music that works. Known in the West as ‘the Cherry Blossom Song’, the traditional Sakura Sakura finds Shiraki employing mallets, fingers, brushes, and sticks in combination with the Kyoto players as jazz and tradition blend. Yosakoi Bushi means ‘better come at night to make love’. There’s a feel of bluesy early Coltrane in the relaxed swing and soprano solo. Yamanaka Bushi is a song from the Yamanaka Onsen, or hot springs. The quintet bathes in the song’s heat, as a young Terumasa Hino displays why he’s a world-renowned trumpeter. Matsuri No Genzo conjures the images of a rural temple feast. After a haunting Koto refrain, everyone has a taste, and Shiraki’s play makes sure there are no leftovers. Hino takes the melody and solos exquisitely on his ballad Alone, Alone And Alone. Suwa is another Hino piece. The Koto takes on an almost Avant-garde role here, with an electronic-sounding accompaniment to the muted trumpet melody. An amazing coalescence of the serene traditional music of Japan and the youthful vitality of jazz.

Comprised of Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield (guitar, vocals), Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keys), and Perrin Moss (drums), the new album is the follow up to their 2015 album Choose Your Weapon, which Rolling Stone described as “a stunning step up”. The new project comes after being sampled on songs by The Carters (Beyonce & Jay-Z), Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Chance The Rapper, and Drake—with whom Nai Palm collaborated on his Scorpion album.

If you’re from Australia and you want to play tough, straightforward punk-leaning rock with a lot of energy, you have your choice of some pretty impressive role models, such as the Celibate Rifles, the Saints, and especially Radio Birdman, arguably the Antipodes greatest contribution to punk. Civic are a fierce rock & roll band from Melbourne who clearly aspire to this great tradition, and for their second album, 2023’s Taken by Force, they’ve gone straight to the source in pursuit of a mentor: in this case, Radio Birdman vocalist Rob Younger, who produced the LP. While Younger’s presence doubtless helped bring out the Birdman-isms in this music, Civic clearly couldn’t pull this off if they didn’t have the goods, and the good news is they’ve done their homework and kick out the jams with admirable strength. As songwriters, Civic lack something in the way of original vision, and anyone who owns a copy of Do the Pop! will recognize the melodic frameworks of most of these tracks (though on “Born in the Heat” they seem to be borrowing from the Clash, which makes for some variety). That said, if you want to hear a band that knows how to crank out some high-energy, no-frills rock, Taken by Force is for you. Jim McCullough has a vocal sneer worthy of Mark Arm (if not Iggy Pop), guitarists Lewis Hodgson and Jackson Harry tear into the songs with just the right degree of finesse (and can pull off solid solos when called upon), and bassist Roland Hlavka and drummer Matt Blach know how to push this monster into fifth gear. This music breaks no new ground, but in both concept and execution, Taken By Force does right by its inspirations and is a welcome reminder of just how good some down and dirty old-school proto-punk can feel. Sure, you’ve heard this sort of thing before, but when it’s served up with this kind of quality and commitment, there’s lots to be said for giving it another spin.

Only nine months after her momentous debut solo album Ekhidna, the guitarist is back fronting her trio. With their previous album, Smells Funny, this explosive and expansive trio experienced a breakthrough of sorts, having gone from strength to strength through five albums since their 2011 debut Shoot!, gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps. With the hypnotic title track, the spacious ballad “Four Candles”, and a generally more varied mood, Ding Dong. You´re Dead. is the trio´s most dynamic album to date. That said, there´s still enough solid and creative riffing here to satisfy the headbangers, as well as the jazzheads, as they further explore the free and open landscapes most notably started with their Black Stabat Mater album and continued with Smells Funny. As recent performances have shown, online and in the flesh, this trio radiates confidence and have become a surefire hit on the Norwegian live scene. And while we rightly praise Hedvig´s exceptional abilities, let´s not forget how important the rhythm section is to make it all work so well. Ellen Brekken is an accomplished bassist, driving the band just as hard on the electric bass as on the acoustic. Then there´s Ivar Loe Bjørnstad, not your regular rock drummer, not your regular jazz drummer, but in possession of just the right amount of loose swagger.
