This CD is an opportunity to hear two different yet related perspectives on early 20th-century repertoire for viola and piano, and on musical life at the time in general. Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979) and York Bowen (1884–1961) belonged to the same generation, grew up in the same city and to some extent studied at the same colleges, but they differed in their musical outlook and style.

Franz Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A is arguably the most instantly recognisable piece of chamber music in the entire repertoire, and it remains overwhelmingly popular with performers, broadcasters, audiences and recording companies alike. We named it one of Schubert’s best works
This convivial five-movement work by the 22-year‑old composer embodies many defining characteristics that contribute to its enduring popularity, but uppermost among these is the relentless joy at its core.

Held in high esteem by his contemporaries, Orfeo Vecchi stands out as a remarkable figure with regard to the sacred repertoire he produced from the late 1500s. Respectful of the written texts while elegantly expressing pictorial content through subtle dialogue, antiphony and counterpoint, the 20 pieces of the Motectorum sex vocibus liber tertius form a rich and eclectic collection that fully reveals Vecchi’s mastery and religious inspiration. This world premiere recording has been made by musicians involved in recovering the wealth of unpublished materials held in Vercelli Cathedral, where Vecchi studied and worked for much of his career.

Hagiga is a group that takes the freedom to play what they feel like, making the fun and craftsmanship splash! – Music Frames (Netherlands). Beginning with Dave Douglas’ contributions to John Zorn’s “Masada,” through his seminal albums of the ’90s, Israeli saxophonist Alon Farber has been deeply inspired by the beauty & uniqueness of the trumpeter’s expansive sonic output. Hoping to someday find the opportunity to cross musical paths, that day came in the summer of 2023 as Douglas joined Farber’s accomplished group, Hagiga (meaning, appropriately, ‘celebration’), at the Jerusalem Jazz Festival. Providing the band with great inspiration, Alon dubbed Douglas “the magician,” as he lifted the ensemble with his presence, his tunes offering stimulating landscapes for them to explore, while Hagiga’s iridescent chemistry delivered their own magic. “… a powerful, serious album… ” – Distrito Jazz (Spain)
