Since the first composers started calling their works things like “nocturnes” or “serenades”, there has been music designed specifically to evoke the dusk or the night. And then from the romantic period onward, the night began to become associated with worry, or even terror. Schumann’s Phantasiestücke (1837) contain at least one nocturne movement in which the night is presented in a terroristic light (so to speak). In der Nacht, one of the great Schumannian moments, is concentrated into scarcely four minutes. Seventy years later, Ravel took the fear even further with Le Gibet, the central movement of Gaspard de la nuit – even more night – which tells of the gibbet where the hanged men twist gently to the sound of the night chimes; whileScarbo closes the triptych on the image of a nightmare dwarf. Finally, while Out of Doors by Bartók isn’t necessarily all set at night, the fourth movement, The Night’s Music, remains one of the most unsettling moments in all of piano literature. Born in Budapest in 1968, Dénes Várjon studied with György Kurtág and András Schiff. The winner of Liszt prizes as well as of Budapest’s Géza Anda and Leo Weiner competitions, he has performed at the festivals of Salzburg, Lucerne, Davos and with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Zürich Tonhalle, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and the Kremerata Baltica.

Boccherini owes his celebrity to more than just the infamous Minuet of the Quintet Op.11 No.5 – although that is included here too. This recording rights the balance with some elan: from the brilliant castanets of the Fandango to the much more Viennese style of the String Quartet, the musicians of the Cuarteto Casals and their guests demonstrate the infinite creative resources of the composer. It culminates in the Night Music of the Streets of Madrid, a vivid example of musical realism in which, as Boccherini put it, ‘the strict rules of counterpoint’ would be out of place!

Guitarist Christoph Denoth returns with a new album of works inspired by South America, centered on the iconic tango. The continent of South America, with its diverse countries and various lines of historical development, has stimulated the creation of many musical traditions. But throughout the heterogeneous patterns of culture, the guitar has a central part to play as a national instrument in all South American countries. This selection (titled tanguero, describing one who sings or dances the tango) brings together many of the styles and genres of that vast continent in a colorful blend of melodies, rhythms, and harmonies. Christoph Denoth was born in Basel, Switzerland, and spent an important part of his early life in the Swiss mountains. His extraordinary musical talent became apparent early on, at which stage he already loved the guitar. He began his concert career at age 15. His studies of the classical guitar led him to the conservatories of Lucerne, Basel, and Zurich. He attended master classes with Pepe Romero and others and trained as a soloist with Oscar Ghiglia at the Basel Musikakademie. He regularly performs as a soloist with chamber orchestras and ensembles such as the Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain (Peter Maxwell Davies) or the Offenburger Streichtrio, and at international music festivals such as that of Schleswig-Holstein. He has also performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall in New York, at the Berlin Philharmonie, and at the Salzburg Mozarteum.

In cooperation with the Bayreuth Festival and BR-Klassik, we announce the release of Bayreuth 2020: Wagner at Wahnfried. This album features Siegfried Idyll, performed by the Festival’s Music Director Christian Thielemann and members of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, and the Wesendonck Lieder, with Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund as soloist.

Dr Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon, expressed DG’s pleasure at working closely with the Festival once again, both online and in staging and recording a unique live event: “The Bayreuth Festival has shaped the reception history of Wagner’s music, and for us at Deutsche Grammophon, building a relationship with its team has been a truly enriching experience. (…) The challenges of summer 2020 have proved just how pro-active our partnership can be: working together, we succeeded in making the entire Festival programme available to a global audience online via DG Stage in no time at all. On top of that, and in keeping with Wagner’s own feelings about rethinking and creatively breaking with tradition, we made the joint decision to document for posterity the novelty of an opening concert held at Haus Wahnfried under the direction of Maestro Thielemann.”

He did not thrust himself into the limelight but put himself, with economical, clear gestures, entirely at the service of the music: amongst the conductors of his time, Karl B”ohm epitomized the anti-star. In the summer of 1964 he delighted the Lucerne audience with a compellingly flowing and cantabile reading of Bruckner’s Seventh – of course at the helm of “his” Vienna Philharmonic, with whom he was also to perform a buoyant Hindemith concerto six years later.

Ramin Bahrami is considered one of the most interesting interpreters of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music of our days. In May 2009 he debuted at Leipziger Gewandhaus with Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhausorchester, performing two of the greatest Bach Piano Concertos. The Leipziger Volkszeitung wrote: “a wizard of sound, a poet of the keyboard… extraordinary artist who has the courage to face Bach in a true personal way”.
Other important appointments work during all the 2009-10 season: performances at the “Piano aux Jacobins” Festival in Toulose, then in Finland and Estonia with Andres Mustonen (including the appearance at the Opening Concert of the Tallin Estonian Baroque Festival) and in solo recital; in February the debut in Paris playing the Goldberg Variations and in March a tour with the Festival Strings Lucerne; in May another great success with Riccardo Chailly in Gewandhaus completing the Bach Concertos presentation; next summer the invitation from other important European piano festivals (including La Roque d’Anthéron and Uzés in France) and the Beijing Piano Festival. The Persian pianist is deepening more and more his original mixture of chiselled interpretative reading and European but in same time Oriental vision of the monumental piano works by Johann Sebastian Bach. In 2009 DECCA Universal released the 6-cds box Ramin Bahrami plays Bach, with all Bahrami’s Bach recordings till there and a selection from live performances of the last years, and in 2010 the French Suites recording. Before that, the Goldberg Variations, the 7 Partitas and the Art of Fugue, released respectively in 2004, 2005 and 2007, launched Bahrami as popular artist, and the recording of The Art of Fugue reached the top ten of pop-music best sellers in Italy, keeping this position for seven weeks; then the releasing of Concerto Italiano, with Bach works inspired to Italy (Concerto Italiano, Aria variata nella maniera italiana, Capriccio sulla lontananza del fratello dilettissimo, Quattro Duetti, etc.), and in 2009 the inusual Bach’s Sonatas received again important evaluations from critics and audience. Bahrami already performed in the most prestigious concert halls of the Italian musical panorama. Among his highlights, important tours and the performances in halls like Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Sala Verdi di Milano, Teatro Olimpico di Roma and expecially Accademia di Santa Cecilia, where he appeared in the prestigious “Solo Piano” series with Maurizio Pollini, Grigory Sokolov, Daniel Barenboim, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Evgeny Kissin and where, in March 2008, he performed a Bach-Marathon with the cellist Mario Brunello. In June 2008 his appearance at Wigmore Hall in London, with great plause of the audience. In May 2009, he performed the Art of Fugue at the prestigious “Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli” Brescia and Bergamo International Piano Festival, together with other important names of the piano such as Andràs Schiff, Lang Lang, Angela Hewitt, Grigory Sokolov, Alexander Lonquich. In September, he received the invitation to open the Autumn edition of Bologna Festival “Il nuovo, l’antico” and to close the Festival Pergolesi Spontini with the cellist Umberto Clerici, playing Bach’s Viola Sonatas and other composers that then he toured in Asolo, Napoli, L’Aquila and other Italian cities. Moreover, he recently opened the chamber music season of Santa Cecilia, in Rome and the Beethoven Festival in Varsavia, together with flautist Massimo Mercelli. After a triumphant concert in the Great Hall of the Liszt Academy in Budapest and at the Tonhalle in Zurich, he had the chance to perform with Yuri Bashmet and Moscow Soloists.

The title of this album, featuring two world premieres (Grunelius and Fischer), is taken from the composition by the German pianist and composer Wilhelm von Grunelius. The inspiration for his work for flugelhorn, timpani and strings came from the poem ‘Chant d’automne’ by the French poet and art critic Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821-1867). The use of texts is a recurring theme in this colourful programme of music for the trumpet in a variety of combinations. At the end of the final movement of his Sonata for trumpet and piano, ‘Trauermusik’, Paul Hindemith incorporates Bach’s chorale ‘Alle Menschen mussen sterben’ (BWV 634). In his Eine Deutsch-Jiddische Kantate, Iván Fischer employs texts by Avrom Sutzkever, Rainer Maria Rilke, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and others. The recording is also of particular value in view of the fact that the two world premieres of music by Grunelius and Fischer are performed by the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer himself, while he also conducts his own Eine Deutsch-Jiddische Kantate, with his daughter Nora Fischer as soprano soloist.

Pergolesi completed his Stabat Mater a few days before his death, on 17 March 1736, prompting comparisons with another mythical figure, Mozart composing his Requiem. It is framed here by three more masterpieces of the pianto genre in a similar spirit of bittersweet sadness. Born in Buenos Aires to Slovenian parents, Bernarda Fink studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón. Today her repertoire ranges from the Baroque to the twentieth century, and she appears regularly with such great international orchestras as the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic and with celebrated Baroque ensembles. Among the conductors with whom she works are Nikolaus Harnoncourt, René Jacobs, Mariss Jansons and Riccardo Muti. Since the start of her career, Bernarda Fink has been applauded in the leading concert halls of Europe and Argentina. She was recently heard in the role of Irene (Theodora) under the direction of Ivor Bolton at the Salzburg Festival and as Idamante in Luc Bondy’s production of Idomeneo conducted by Jesús López-Cobos at the Teatro Real in Madrid; she has also recorded the latter role for harmonia mundi with René Jacobs. She gives song recitals in the principal European and American musical centres. Bernarda Fink has taken part in more than 50 recordings.

After having recorded Mozart’s last three violin concertos in 2014, Arabella Steinbacher, the Festival Strings Lucerne and its leader Daniel Dodds now complete the cycle by presenting Mozart’s less well-known, but equally enchanting Violin Concertos 1 & 2, together with his Adagio in E Major and Rondos in C Major and B-flat Major.

Steinbacher plays the cadenzas by Wolfgang Schneiderhan, who co-founded the Festival Strings Lucerne in 1956. Another exciting aspect of this album is that she plays for the first time on the „Ex Benno Walter“ Strad from 1718.
