Douglas – KZ 30766 (1971) (Original USA) | Jazz Rock

My Goal’s Beyond is the third solo album of John McLaughlin. The album was originally released on Douglas Records in the US. The music is strongly influenced by music of India, and was dedicated to McLaughlin’s spiritual leader, Indian guru Sri Chinmoy. Side one has two longer pieces for the whole band, including soprano saxophone, flute, violin and Indian percussion. Side two of the album features eight short compositions (three standards and five originals) played solely by McLaughlin on acoustic guitar. With the recording he wanted to emphasize his equal love for the acoustic instrument and the beauty of its sound. He wasn’t paid much but he’s “still pleased with it”. (Wiki)

Masahiko Togashi & J.J.Spirits – So What (2017) SACD ISO

Masahiko Togashi & J.J.Spirits – So What (2017)
SACD Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 01:05:12 minutes | 2,62 GB
Genre: Jazz | Publisher (label): Venus Records – VHGD-201

Japanese free jazz corner stone percussionist Masahiko Togashi is known mostly by his late 60s-early 70s advanced recordings but actually he continued playing and recording up to the beginning of new century. His music is mostly all avant-garde jazz but there is a rare exemption — his J.J.Spirits (or Japan Jazz Spirits).
His accompanying all-star quartet on this date included legendary pianist Masahiko Satoh (another Japanese free jazz cult figure),sax player Kohsuke Mine (better known by his excellent albums from early 70s) and bassist Nobuyoshi Ino. Surprisingly enough for band of such background, J.J. Spirits played mostly jazz standards not all that far from originals.

Here on this live gig (as almost on any other music recorded by Togashi as leader) an extremely important factor is great team and band members’ communication. Togashi was a better organizer than leading artist, and his best albums are well-organized collaborative works

“Steppin’ Out” is a personal milestone because all of the songs, despite being from the jazz age, are my own arrangements not adapted from period recordings (plus one original by our pianist), and I think we’ve achieved our goal: to create new, hot music that could have existed during the period that inspires us. It’s not a copy or re-creation, but an entirely new program of music, which nevertheless casts the spell of time travel through the players’ expertise and taste. ARTIST BIO “Eloquent trumpet prodigy” Mike Davis (Wall Street Journal) has a voice beyond his years on his instrument. His playing is imbued with the sounds of prohibition-era speakeasies, Hoovervilles of the depression, and glittering jazz palaces of the swing era, creating a timeless cocktail of American music. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Mike began his trumpet instruction at age nine with Jerry Oram in Seattle and went on to study with Laurie Frink during his undergraduate years. Both encouraged his interest in early jazz styles, which led to his beginning to work professionally in New York City while still in college. He now appears regularly around New York City as the leader of the New Wonders and with Dandy Wellington and his band, Emily Asher’s Garden Party, Glenn Crytzer, Terry Waldo, Baby Soda, Dan Levinson, and many other traditional jazz and swing bands. A regular at the celebrated jam session at Mona’s Bar, Mike is one of the vanguard of young musicians bringing traditional jazz to the forefront of the NYC music scene. The New Wonders, a New York City based septet led by cornetist Mike Davis, vividly invoke America’s Jazz Age during the 1920s, when jazz was the soundtrack for dramatic national changes and played a central part in people’s dreams, adventures and romances.

The In Concert set, which was released on July 24 (the second day of the 1964 Newport Folk Festival), gave a good idea of the on-stage abilities of an act that had become a worldwide success. A trade ad for the album noted that, since forming, the trio had played over 400 concerts to more than two million people.

More than half of the 18 selections had not appeared previously on a Peter, Paul and Mary album. And the nearly 82-minute running time allowed space for the whole range of the group’s talents, from its mastery of traditional and thoughtful new material to Stookey’s previously unrecorded comic sensibility.
“I think that the In Concert album in it’s own way had something very, very special,” said Peter Yarrow. “There was a sense of really being there at the concert, and there really was a sense of capitulation of the flow of the concert. It had a point of view. It had a consistency in sound terms.”

At a time when double-LP sets were practically unheard of, In Concert peaked at #4 in September of 1965, staying on the charts for 54 weeks, and becoming Peter, Paul and Mary’s fourth straight gold record in the process.

It all goes back to year 1965. Spencer Davis Group was recording a single for the label Phillips Germany after having released its number one hit “Keep on Running”. Alongside the guitarist and a former German teacher Spencer Davis, Steve Winwood and his older brother Muff also the upcoming drummer Pete York was a member of the band. The producer of the session was Siggi Loch. “We’ve been friends ever since”, Pete York, who turned 70 in August, reminisces. “Maybe it is Siggi’s birthday present that I got the chance to release this album on ACT”.

On this second CD with his band Obbligato Tom Rainey surprises with standards and beautiful love songs like «Stella by Starlight», „What Is This Thing Called Love“ or „I Fall in Love too Easily“.

Tom Rainey has played in bands with Tim Berne, Fred Hirsch and Craig Taborn, and his own trio with Ingrid Laubrock and Mary Halvorson. For this ensemble he chose some of the finest players New York has to offer: Ingrid Laubrock, Ralph Alessi, Kris Davis and Drew Gress.

Christian Broecking writes (liner notes): „With Obbligato, Rainey brings two familiar acquaintances from Jazz history to the fore – collective playing and improvising on Standards – the actual material itself, the well-known melodies and chord progressions are not overly taken apart. With Obbligato he wanted to find his own way of playing the milestones of Jazz history.“

In the 1950s and 60s, the blues was the dominant form of Black vernacular music throughout Texas and the surrounding areas. In segregated neighborhoods, community members gathered in saloons, dancehalls, and each other’s homes to hear their neighbors sing their stories of sorrow, heartbreak, jubilation, and triumph. Robert “Mack” McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee of the blues, stepped into this world and became one of its most devout advocates and documentarians. By photographing Black and Latino Texans and their neighborhoods, as well as recording and interviewing musicians, many of whom never stepped foot into a proper recording studio, McCormick endeared and eventually embedded himself into these communities. By the time he died in 2015, McCormick had amassed a collection of 590 reels of sound recordings and 165 boxes of manuscripts, original interviews and research notes, thousands of photographs and negatives, playbills, and posters. Because McCormick never published or released most of these materials, his collection became a thing of legend and intense speculation among scholars, blues aficionados, and musicians alike. ‘Playing for the Man at the Door: Field Recordings from the Collection of Mack McCormick, 1958-1971′ is the first compilation of music drawn from this fabled collection, which indelibly documents a pivotal moment in African American history. It features never-before-heard performances not only from musicians who became icons in their own right, including Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb, but also, crucially, performers whose names may be unfamiliar to even the most devoted blues fans and scholars. Newly mastered recordings and accompanying photographs bring to life many of these forgotten figures: offering insight into their lives and illuminating in new, enlightening ways their joys and anguish, deep social connections, distinctive voices, and cultural networks. The collection spans gospel, ragtime, country blues dirges, the unclassifiable music of George “Bongo Joe” Coleman, and more, showing that no community, no matter how tight knit, is monolithic. Accompanying the music is a 128-page book, which contains breathtaking photographs by McCormick and his associates, as well as contextual essays by producers Jeff Place and John Troutman on McCormick’s life, and by musicians Mark Puryear and Dom Flemons on some of the marginalized communities throughout “Greater Texas” to which McCormick devoted his life’s work. This release is a partnership with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

On his new album, The Great Escape, Chris Stamey – known for his work in The dB’s, the Big Star’s Third concerts, returns to the electric guitar sounds and melodic lyricism that informed his classic ’80s solo records It’s Alright, Fireworks, and 2004’s Travels in the South – but with a twist!. This time out, alongside adroit pedal-steel aces Eric Heywood (Jayhawks, Pretenders, Alejandro Escovedo) and Allyn Love, Mipso’s Libby Rodenbough, and Chatham County Line’s John Teer and Dave Wilson, he’s found a distinctive spin on the ’70s Southern California country-rock flavors of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers.

Snark Horse is a book of highly-detailed one-bar compositions by pianist/composer Matt Mitchell and drummer/composer Kate Gentile — audaciously presented across six discs – that are designed to incite inventive, multi-directional improvisation. It is also the name of a revolving cast of musicians – including Mitchell and Gentile – who have performed this music in various combinations since 2013. Both Mitchell and Gentile’s work are characterized by their exacting nature. Mitchell’s prior release, Phalanx Ambassadors, was called by Popmatters “a high watermark for the new jazz… a breathtaking jawdropper from one of the best pianists and composers now working.” Gentile’s 2017 debut release, Mannequins, was described by The New York Times as “full of stuttering rhythms and teetering intervallic jumps; an array of textures – sometimes chiming, sometimes abraded – disorient you even as they deepen your listening.”
