Cissy Houston (born Emily Drinkard) has had a long and varied career as a background vocalist, session singer and solo artist but is probably best known for being the mother of the massively successful R&B star Whitney Houston, and the aunt of both Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick. During her time with The Sweet Inspirations Houston sang back-up vocals for Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls, The Drifters, Dusty Springfield, Van Morrison (Brown Eyed Girl), The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Elvis Presley (the 69 Vegas comeback) and her niece Dionne Warwick. Having gone solo in 1969 Houston recorded the original version of Midnight Train To Georgia (later a #1 single for Gladys Knight and The Pips) on her only album for Janus Records. In 1977 Houston signed with Private Stock Records and released CISSY HOUSTON under the guidance of Pop and Disco arranger/producer Michael Zager. Although the album did not produce any hit singles Houston s renditions of the pop standards Tomorrow (from the musical Annie), Elton John s Your Song, The Hollies He Ain t Heavy, He s My Brother, and The Walker Brothers Make It Easy On Yourself show off her incredible, gospel infused, soulful and impassioned voice to full effect, using her vast recording experience to inject subtlety and power in equal measure.

Since the release of 2011’s award winning debut, No Time for Dreaming, Charles Bradley has transformed from a rising star in the Daptone galaxy into a bona-fide headliner, now affectionately known across the globe as “The Screaming Eagle of Soul.” The raw emotion and soulfulness of Bradley’s voice lifts him up among the greats of the golden age of Soul – Otis, JB, Wilson Pickett, and Darrell Banks. Anyone who has had the privilege of hearing him sing has experienced how Bradley can captivate an entire audience with a simple “Ooooo…” Bradley and writer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Thomas “TNT” Brenneck returned to Dunham studios and recorded the most exciting Daptone release to date, Victim of Love. On this album, Bradley moves past his “Heartaches and Pain” to the great promise of hope and love. Though quite at home among the music that has affirmed Daptone as the world’s #1 authority on Soul Music, Victim of Love proves to be a genre-bending masterpiece, picking up where the early 70’s Temptations left off and edging boldly forward into psychedelic soul exploration.

Charles Bradley has already proved that he is not simply a clone of James Brown, but rather the worthy heir to The Godfather of Soul. With Changes, the Brooklyn soulman rediscovered by the folks at Daptone Records releases a third album on which his impressive voice can lend itself to any melody. Just listening to the eponymous track on the album, an intense cover of an original song by Black Sabbath! The man nicknamed the ‘Screaming Eagle of Soul’ excels in ballads here, but even more impressive are the more up-tempo songs like Ain’t It A Sin – Bradley shows himself to be a master of his chosen art. A great vintage from a big character in soul music right now.

Funky-Disco: Cleveland “Cleve” Eaton is a member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, right there with Nat Cole, Wilson Pickett, Martha Reeves, Jerry Wexler, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, and a few dozen other notables. “I don’t play like nobody else,” he told The Birmingham News when inducted in 2008. “I do my own thing. It’s absolutely Alabama.” Eaton’s Plenty Good Eaton, recorded in Curtis Mayfield’s soul Chicago at Chess Recording Studio with local hired-guns and first out in 1975, belongs to the R&B genre, even though there are side paths into soul-jazz. The lushly arranged “Chi-Town” proceeds from a cloned “Shaft” introduction into a lushly-produced funk romp with Eaton’s upright bass guiding a chicken-scratch funk guitar, electronic keyboards, strings, horns, and a female singer or two.

Like many other Dallas-based rhythm & blues musicians, Bobby Patterson is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who continued the deep soul tradition of people like Otis Redding, Joe Tex, and Wilson Pickett. But unlike some of these other singers, Patterson has worked in all aspects of the record business: as a songwriter, producer, promotion man, and label owner. Rare and famous this 1972 disc from overlooked Texas soul man Patterson has a bit of everything, gliding freely between easy soul (“Recipe for Peace”) and down-home funk. Check out “How Do You Spell Love” though, a cool, mid-tempo groover. Then there’s “Right On Jody“, another , funky soul cut. And then there’s “This Whole Funky World Is a Ghetto” – which isn’t quite as nice as it sounds but vaguely lives up to its potential.

Boz Scaggs – Boz Scaggs (1969) [Audio Fidelity 2013] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Departing from the Steve Miller Band after a two-album stint, Boz Scaggs found himself on his own but not without support. Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, his friend, helped him sign with Atlantic Records and the label had him set up shop in Muscle Shoals, recording his debut album with that legendary set of studio musicians, known for their down-and-dirty backing work for Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett, among many other Southern soul legends. The Muscle Shoals rhythm section, occasionally augmented by guitarist Duane Allman, gives this music genuine grit, but this isn’t necessarily a straight-up blue-eyed soul record, even if the opening “I’m Easy” and “I’ll Be Long Gone” are certainly as deeply soulful as anything cut at Muscle Shoals. Even at this early stage Scaggs wasn’t content to stay in one place, and he crafted a kind of Americana fantasia here, also dabbling in country and blues along with the soul and R&B that grounds this record. If the country shuffle “Now You’re Gone” sounds just slightly a shade bit too vaudeville for its own good, it only stands out because the rest of the record is pitch-perfect, from the Jimmie Rodgers cover “Waiting for a Train” and the folky “Look What I Got!” to the extended 11-minute blues workout “Loan Me a Dime,” which functions as much as a showcase for a blazing Duane Allman as it does for Boz. But even with that show-stealing turn, and even with the Muscle Shoals musicians giving this album its muscle and part of its soul, this album is still thoroughly a showcase for Boz Scaggs’ musical vision, which even at this stage is wide and deep. It would grow smoother and more assured over the years, but the slight bit of raggedness suits the funky, down-home performances and helps make this not only a great debut, but also an enduring blue-eyed soul masterpiece.

Maybe We Never Die, Anderson East’s third release for Elektra / Low Country Sound takes the Alabama born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter’s seductively vintage voice in a decidedly fresh direction. The 12 tracks flow together with an overarching sense of ambience but maintain distinct musical boundaries. The energy toggles between a hunger for vulnerability in togetherness and a clinging to solitude as a romantic self-defense. There is consternation with the speed and volume at which the world operates and solace to be found in the simple act of getting up and going. And the beguiling title track, with its woozy strings swirling around East’s celestial falsetto as it curls towards the ceiling like smoke is, as they say, a whole mood; a sense of a single night’s dusk-to-sunrise contemplation. Collaborating once again with Dave Cobb along with longtime bandleader and now co-producer Philip Towns, East has found an enticing new avenue, one that maintains a connection to his past but keeps his eyes on the road ahead.

“I wanted to create something unique with this record,” says East. “A piece of music, that as a whole, knew where its footing was but yet still attempted to see what was behind the curtains. I’m very proud of what it took to make and its ultimate outcome. I am very grateful to the wonderfully talented humans that lent their gifts to make it what it is.” (Anderson East)

The 16th studio album from Neil Young, This Note’s For You was released in 1988 and was originally credited to Young & The Bluenotes. The overall theme of the album relates to the commercialism of rock and roll. The video for the title track was basically a parody of corporate rock and advertising which featured a Michael Jackson look-alike whose hair catches fire. The video was nominated for a Grammy in the category of “Best Concept Video” in 1989.

Bébé le Strange is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Heart. It was released on February 14, 1980 through Epic Records. It was the first album without founding member Roger Fisher on lead guitar, who had left the band months prior along with his brother Michael.

The album was a commercial success, peaking at number five on the U.S. Billboard 200 and staying in the charts for 22 weeks. It also was certified Gold by the RIAA. However it did not sell as well as their previous albums (which had gone Platinum and Multi-Platinum). The record contained the singles “Even It Up” (backed by the Tower of Power horns section) and the title track. Some of the backing vocals were provided by Don Wilhelm, who had been in a group called The Army with Steve Fossen and Roger Fisher in the 1960s.
