Passion that burns, consumes and sometimes kills – it’s the central theme of this concerto lirico, which marks the finale of a very special summer festival at the Arena. The two star singers Sonya Yoncheva and Vittorio Grigolo present “with dramatic and passionate synergy” (OperaClick) some of the most beautiful love duets of opera history. Accompanied by Plácido Domingo as conductor, they combine French repertoire (Gounod, Massenet, Bizet) with famous Italian pieces by Verdi and Puccini, like “E lucevan le stelle” from Tosca, “Un bel di vedremo” from Madama Butterfly or “Mimì?!…Speravo di trovarvi qui” from La Bohème.

In his new life as a baritone, Plácido Domingo has triumphed in the role of Francesco Foscari in Los Angeles, London and Vienna. Now he takes to the role to La Scala, Milan, the theatre that is the symbol of Italian opera. I due Foscari, premiered in 1844, famously one of Verdis darkest operas, is staged by Alvis Hermanis, who made such an impact at the Salzburg Festival with ‘Die Soldaten’ and ‘Il trovatore’. Domingo is joined by two of Italys most exciting singers, the soprano Anna Pirozzi and the tenor Francesco Meli, and the acclaimed Italian conductor Michele Mariotti. The Financial Times was deeply moved by Domingos performance, calling his interpretation of the role sublime.

Santana – Shaman (2003) [DVD-Audio ISO]

Santana – Shaman
Artist: Santana | Album: Shaman | Style: Guitar, Rock | Year: 2002 | Quality: DVD-Audio (MPL 5.1 96kHz/24Bit, MLP 2.0 96kHz/24Bit, Dolby AC3 5.1, Dolby AC3 2.0) | Bitrate: lossless | Tracks: 16 | Size: ~6.66 Gb | Recovery: 5% | Covers: in archive | Release: Arista | BMG, 2003 | Note: Not Watermarked

Nobody could have predicted the success of the star-studded Supernatural in 1999, but it revitalized the career of Santana, plus Clive Davis, who cooked up the whole idea of the comeback in the first place. Given its blockbuster status, a sequel that followed the same blueprint was inevitable, which is exactly what 2002’s Shaman is. If anything, there’s even less Carlos Santana here, proving that he and Davis are among those that believe that Supernatural was a success because of Rob Thomas and “Smooth,” not the typically tasteful, excellent guitar playing. And, no surprise, Thomas has a strong presence here even if he doesn’t sing. He writes two songs, flexing his muscles as a neo-soul songwriter (not badly, either, on cuts sung by Musiq and Seal), and providing the template for all the guests here: they want to launch a new stage of their career, finding a wider audience. Outside of Seal (who has a comeback of his own to launch) and Placido Domingo (who does these things because he can), everybody here has hearts to win and something to prove, and they do a mixed job of it. P.O.D. falls on its face with the embarrassing “America,” but Chad Kroeger far outshines anything he’s done with a surprisingly subtle and soulful “Why Don’t You & I,” easily better than anything by Nickelback. But this points out the problem on the record — each song is tailored to the strengths of the lead singer, not the strengths of Santana, who’s left with piddly, forgettable instrumental interludes and playing endless lines beneath the vocal melodies. Who can blame him? It’s the only chance he really gets to play on this album. On the whole, it holds together no better or no worse than Supernatural — it’s the same record, essentially. True, there wasn’t anything as awful as “America” or the foolish aural press release “Since Supernatural,” but there was nothing as joyous and wonderful as the Michelle Branch-sung “The Game of Love.” Written by the team behind the New Radicals’ modern pop classic “You Get What You Give,” it’s every bit as soaring melodic and irresistible; it may not be Santana — it sounds even less like Santana than “Smooth” — but it’s perfect pop, the best pop single of 2002, for reasons that have nothing to do with Santana. Pretty Yende, a rising star soprano with a modern fairy-tale story releases her debut album A Journey. Born in a remote town in South Africa, Yende was first introduced to opera music at the age of sixteen when hearing the Flower Duet from Delibes opera Lakmé in a British Airways commercial. At that moment she decided to become an opera singer. Yende rose to the top of the opera world with unparalleled speed, with competition successes and engagements at the world s foremost opera houses. She was the first artist in history to win first prize in every category of the International Belvedere Competition in 2009 and also won first prize in every category at Plácido Domingo s Operalia competition in 2011. Yende had her debut at La Scala in Milan in 2010 and was accepted into their prestigious young artist s program. But her international breakthrough came at the Metropolitan Opera in 2013 when Yende replaced Nino Machaidze in Rossini s Le Comte Ory, stepping in at a month s notice opposite star tenor Juan Diego Flórez and gained rapturous international acclaim. A Journey is a particularly joyful labor of love for Yende as each track on the album celebrates a milestone in her extraordinary musical journey and rise to the top of the opera world. (more…)

Giacomo Puccini – Turandot – Andrea Bocelli, Jennifer Wilson, Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, Zubin Mehta (2015) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Recording Location: Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, Valencia

Following last year’s release of Manon Lescaut, Andrea Bocelli stays with Puccini for an emotionally charged account of the composer’s magnificent Turandot. This new complete opera recording, featuring the world-renowned aria “Nessun dorma” (“None shall sleep”), will be warmly welcomed by Bocelli’s army of ardent fans. It is conducted by Zubin Mehta, who has made a speciality of this first-class Puccini opera ever since his landmark 1972 Decca recording, here drawing a stirring orchestral performance from the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana.
Bocelli takes the lead role of Calaf – the unknown prince – and his powerful tenor tells a compelling story of riddles answered, triumph secured, honour displayed and love deeply felt.
The key role of the ice-cold riddler princess, Turandot, is sung by American soprano Jennifer Wilson.
Completing an impressive cast are Jessica Nuccio as Liù, Alexander Tsymbalyuk as Timur, Pablo García López as Pong and Germán Olvera and Valentino Buzza as Ping and the Gran Cancelliere, the last two coming from Plácido Domingo’s training centre, the Centre de Perfeccionament Plácido Domingo at Valencia’s Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
The soprano who created the role of Turandot in Puccini’s final, unfinished masterpiece, Rosa Raisa, described the first night to a biographer: “It was an electrified atmosphere, with the greatest musicians and critics in the world gathered for this world premiere and listening religiously to Puccini’s last creation. At the end of the Third Act [first scene], while the dead Liù is accompanied by Timur, with Ping, Pang and Pong following, and as the chorus continues to intone the motif of the last aria that she sang, until the whole stage is emptied, Toscanini laid down his baton, and in a voice choking with emotion announced that this is where Puccini left off: ‘Here is where the maestro died.’”
Bocelli’s deep-rooted commitment to opera shines through in his moving rendition of “Nessun dorma,” perhaps the best-known and most-loved tenor aria of all time. As the legendary reviewer Edward Greenfield has written, “Bocelli’s great natural gift is a powerful tenor of very distinctive timbre, not conventionally rounded in a Pavarotti-like way but above all virile with a baritonal tinge.”
With sales of more than 80 million records worldwide, Bocelli is the world’s biggest- selling classical artist. Turandotmarks his latest journey into the great Italian master’s operatic canon.

German tenor Jonas Kaufmann has been laying a strong claim to the legacy of the superstar tenors of the 1980s and 1990s, but until now it hasn’t been completely clear that Verdi, the tenor’s bread and butter, was a fully compelling part of his arsenal. With this release, Kaufmann puts any doubts to rest and steps up in a big way to his signing by the Sony Classical label and its attendant operatic muscle. The sheer ease of Kaufmann’s voice in its upper register is about to get to casual opera fans in a big way (and he’s a bit hipper than Pavarotti or even Domingo ever were), and right now the sky would seem to be the limit to his popularity. Yet there is plenty here for opera scorekeepers to dig their teeth into, and it seems likely that Kaufmann will come out very well with them, too. Consider the high C at the end of “Di quella pira” from Il trovatore: surely few tenors in history have hit it out of the park the way Kaufmann does. There is a good mix of hits from various parts of Verdi’s career and some lesser-known pieces, and the album is all newly performed, not a collection of things recorded at different times. It has a sense of confidence, purpose, and commitment to the text (no soulless technical perfection here), and it’s a joy for listeners at all levels. With recent Wagnerian (and Straussian) triumphs under his belt, Kaufmann seems to be entering a period where he can do pretty much anything and probably will.
