The Choir of Westminster Cathedral is the crowning jewel of Catholic church music and has been at the forefront of English sacred music since its foundation in 1901. This new disc draws us into the mystery of the Paschal Vigil, the very apex of the Church’s liturgical year, transporting us on a journey from darkness into light through a sequence of plainsong and polyphony. It is the first album under the choir’s current director, Simon Johnson, picking up where Vexilla Regis (AF002) left off, and immerses the listener in the Cathedral’s own unique treasury of liturgical music, including compositions crafted by its former musicians, as well as repertoire at the heart of the choir’s work, represented here in polyphony by Victoria, Monteverdi and L’Héritier’s glorious Surrexit pastor bonus.

A special prelude to this was the intermission film of this year’s New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, in which two St. Florian Boys’ Choir members led an audience of millions through all of Bruckner’s memorials and in which the choir performed the single release of the motte “Locus iste”.

A committed and militant bassist, he began his career at a very young age, frequenting the Milanese pop music scene and then dedicating himself to jazz. In 1971, after meeting Guido Mazzon, he joined his Gruppo Contemporaneo, a group that contributed to spreading free jazz in Italy and which, among others, included Gaetano Liguori on piano and Filippo Monico on drums. Later, with them, he experienced the Trio Idea from which the long partnership with Liguori was born, alongside him in numerous projects and actively participating in the scene of that “political jazz” that musically characterized the decade.
