Mike LeDonne has appeared on over 100 CDs as a sideman with so many jazz giants it is hard to keep count: Art Farmer, Clifford Jordan, Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, Christian McBride and others. LeDonne made his first recording as a leader on the B-3 for Savant in 2003 and has since added seven additional records to his discography on the label. To his regular band, The Groover Quartet (Eric Alexander, Peter Bernstein and Joe Farnsworth) Mike has added guests Jeremy Pelt on trumpet and the venerable bassist, Bob Cranshaw. Grace Jones, one of the most innovative and charismatic artists in the distinguished history of Island Records, is to have her first three albums for the label released as the 3CD, 4LP, Blu-ray Audio and digital sets titled ‘Grace Jones – Disco.’
The packages, out on May 4, comprise the first three Island releases by the Jamaican entertainer, 1977’s ‘Portfolio,’ the following year’s ‘Fame’ and the 1979 release ‘Muse,’ augmented with rare and unheard recordings.
All three of the albums were produced by one of the most influential mixers and producers in the formative days of the disco boom, Tom Moulton. Each of the discs was rooted in the dance milieu of the late 1970s, before Jones’ transition to the reggae flavours of her later crossover success.
‘Portfolio’ was released in the year that the former model signed with Island, and featured interpretations of some show tunes and standards including ‘Send In The Clowns,’ ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘La Vie En Rose.’ The album enjoyed top ten success in Italy and Holland.
‘Fame,’ released only nine months later, was recorded at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia, repeating the previous album’s formula of a continuous medley on side one. It also contained an interpretation of the vintage ballad ‘Autumn Leaves.’ Jones, who had one co-write on each of the first two releases, co-wrote two songs on ‘Muse,’ which also featured the single ‘On Your Knees.’ (more…)

2008 saw the Queen of Rock “n” Roll, Tina Turner return to the live circuit and announce the ‘Tina Turner’s 50th Anniversary Concert Tour’ much to the delight of her fans. The tour kicked off in Kansas in October 2008 and continued for six months visiting over ten countries in two continents.
Tina performed an astounding ninety shows, repeatedly selling out, with nightly standing ovations. Millions of fans and critics alike were blown away by Tina’s age defying high-octane performances showing that the star has no sign of slowing down at nearly 70 years young. The megastar delivered an energetic, powerful, uncompromised two hour set performing classic hits with incredible musicians, vocalists, dancers and ninjas, supported by stunning production, innovative choreography, spectacular lighting, pyrotechnics and much more.
As Tina finished the final show in Sheffield in May 2009 she said, “I have been overwhelmed, astounded and taken to new heights by the reaction of the thousands of fans who came to see me every night. This has been a tour to remember, to hold dear in my heart and what a way to celebrate my 50 years in the business…to sum up…it’s been super!”
To commemorate this record breaking world tour Parlophone will release the Tina Live DVD on 28th September. The DVD was filmed at GelreDome, Arnhem in Holland in March 2009 where Tina played to an enormous crowd of 70,000 people.
Directed by David Mallet for Serpent Productions, he says, ‘Tina is modest. The credits for her stage career should always have read “staged by Tina Turner”. As such it has been a positive pleasure over the years to translate her intentions onto film.”
This breathtaking footage is filmed in HD and mixed in 5.1 surround sound. At over two hours long it features all of her much loved songs including, ‘The Best’, ‘Private Dancer’ and the powerful ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’. (more…)

Set one of New Year’s Eve proper features a range of Umphrey’s tunes: look for massive improv vehicle “Ocean Billy,” prog-monster “Wizard Burial Ground,” and the debut of dance-anthem “Bad Friday,” which featured the return of Mad Dog’s Filthy Little Secret and Jeff Coffin. The horns resurfaced and joined the band for much of set two, including a “40’s Theme”, “Booth Love,” and the debut of the Phil Collins hit “Sussudio.” As the NYE run nears, the question always circles amongst fans, “What will the band play for the ball drop?” 2013’s “Hurt Bird Bath” did not disappoint as the energy mounted to a pinnacle at midnight . Keeping with tradition, midnight brought a heartfelt but rocking rendition of “Auld Lang Syne,” complete with confetti and fantastic balloon drop. Umphrey’s McGee returned to Colorado for a highly-anticipated three-night run at the Fillmore Auditorium. Wasting no time, the band took the stage to Beethoven’s “5th Symphony” which set an energetic, funk-focused groove for night one. Highlights in the first set include “Out of Order” into “Partyin’ Peeps,” along with Jake Cinninger’s keyboard cameo with Joel Cummins on “Deeper.” Set two brought fans “The Bottom Half,” featuring a lyrical stew by Brendan Bayliss that was followed by a cover of the classic “Rock The Casbah.” The segue grew into a drum solo, which found both Cinninger and Andy Farag collaborating on the percussion rig. Umphrey’в rolled into Austin, Texas ready to rage at what has been their 4/20 destination spot for three years running: the famous Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheatre. Spirits were high as fans swarmed Red River and started flowing into the venue for the highly anticipated sold out show.
The band started the night off on fire with a stellar “Utopian Fir” sandwich. Fan favorites “In The Kitchen” and “Hurt Bird Bath” stood out as Jake Cinninger delivered with his signature guitar wizardry. Brendan Bayliss took the lead in “Loose Ends” and showcased vocal abilities that seemed to send a warm wave over the crowd. The set continued to cook as they broke into a spectacular cover of The Allman Brothers’ “Jessica”, allowing Joel Cummins to showcase his impressive piano skills. On top of it all, Waful lit up the night with an awe-inspiring array of colors that weaved through the leaves of the venue’s oak trees. “Puppet String” closed out the first set with monumental energy and deep bass lines provided by Ryan Stasik, leaving the crowd hungry for more.
The second set maintained the intensity as Umphrey’s busted out a huge “JaJunk, followed by a shredding version of “Push The Pig”. Fans were then treated to a perfect reggae mashup titled “Life During Exodus” which blended covers of Bob Marley’s “Exodus” and the Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime”. The encore revisited the reggae vibe with “FF” leading into the longest jam of the night during “Divisions” which showcased amazing percussion solos by Kris Myers and Andy Farag. (more…)
