Recorded: October 9, 1980 – July 21, 1981 at Modern Recorders, Redwood City, CA

Neil Young employs Crazy Horse to help him bash out a guitar-drenched hard rock set made up of thrown-together material. The group plays fiercely, as usual, but the lyrics are sketchy, seemingly improvised (the nadir is the nine-minute “T-Bone,” which consists of the lines “Got mashed potato/Ain’t got no t-bone” repeated over and over), and frequently cranky, as in “Motor City,” which finds Young criticizing Japanese cars, and “Rapid Transit,” which takes a belated swipe at new wave music while sounding like second-rate Talking Heads. For the second album in a row, Young seems to be just fulfilling his one-album-a-year record contract. The exception is the album-closing “Shots” (written by 1978), a more substantive and threatening song given a riveting performance. Later, it would be revealed that Young was finding time for his music while giving most of his attention to caring for his disabled son. Still, he might have been better advised to have suspended record-making for a few years instead of turning out half-baked efforts like this one. –William Ruhlmann

Neil Young – On The Beach (1974/2004) [DVD Audio to FLAC 24bit/176.4kHz]

Recorded: November 30, 1973 – April 7, 1974 Arrow Ranch, Woodside, California; Sunset Sound Recorders, Hollywood

Following the 1973 Time Fades Away tour, Neil Young wrote and recorded an Irish wake of a record called Tonight’s the Night and went on the road drunkenly playing its songs to uncomprehending listeners and hostile reviewers. Reprise rejected the record, and Young went right back and made On the Beach, which shares some of the ragged style of its two predecessors. But where Time was embattled and Tonight mournful, On the Beach was savage and, ultimately, triumphant. “I’m a vampire, babe,” Young sang, and he proceeded to take bites out of various subjects: threatening the lives of the stars who lived in L.A.’s Laurel Canyon (“Revolution Blues”); answering back to Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose “Sweet Home Alabama” had taken him to task for his criticisms of the South in “Southern Man” and “Alabama” (“Walk On”); and rejecting the critics (“Ambulance Blues”). But the barbs were mixed with humor and even affection, as Young seemed to be emerging from the grief and self-abuse that had plagued him for two years. But the album was so spare and under-produced, its lyrics so harrowing, that it was easy to miss Young’s conclusion: he was saying goodbye to despair, not being overwhelmed by it. –William Ruhlmann

Neil Young – American Stars ‘N Bars (1977/2004) [DVD Audio to FLAC 24bit/176.4kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/176.4kHz | Time – 00:38:12 minutes | 1.25 GB | Genre: Rock
Source: DVD-Audio (Watermarked!)  | Front cover | © Reprise Records
Recorded: December 13, 1974-April 4, 1977 / Quadrafonic, Nashville; Wally Heider Studios, Hollywood, California; Broken Arrow Ranch, Redwood City, California; Indigo Recording Studio, Malibu

Neil Young made a point of listing the recording dates of the songs on American Stars ‘n Bars; the dates even appeared on the LP labels. They revealed that the songs had been cut at four different sessions dating back to 1974. But even without such documentation, it would have been easy to tell that the album was a stylistic hodgepodge, its first side consisting of country-tinged material featuring steel guitar and fiddle, plus backup vocals from Linda Ronstadt and the then-unknown Nicolette Larson, while the four songs on the second side varied from acoustic solo numbers like “Will to Love” to raging rockers such as “Like a Hurricane.” Just as apparent was the album’s unevenness: side one consisted of lightweight compositions, while side two had more ambitious ones, with “Will to Love,” for example, extending the romantic metaphor of a salmon swimming upstream across seven minutes. The album’s saving grace was “Like a Hurricane,” one of Young’s classic hard rock songs and guitar workouts, and a perennial concert favorite. Without it, American Stars ‘n Bars would have been one of Young’s least memorable albums, and since it turned up the following year on the compilation Decade, the LP was rendered inessential. –William Ruhlmann

Edward Gardner, a Chandos exclusive artist, conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in two masterpieces by William Walton, the Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 1.
Walton burst onto the British musical scene in his twenties, the success of works such as Façade, the Viola Concerto, and Belshazzar’s Feast establishing him in both the avant-garde and the mainstream of British composers. The obvious next step for Walton was to compose a symphony and he was duly commissioned to do so by Sir Hamilton Harty in 1932. The first complete performance of his Symphony No. 1, in 1935, was a triumph, immediately gaining the work an honoured place in British music which it has never lost. It is a highly virtuosic work with a remarkable expressive range, in turns powerful and broad, malicious, melancholic, and majestic.

Roxy Music: Live At The Apollo (2001) Blu-ray 1080i MPEG-2 DD5.1

Title: Roxy Music: Live At The Apollo
Released: 2001
Genre: Pop Roscoe

Issued: Germany | Intergroove
Duration: 1:45:03

Recorded live at the Apollo in London, Roxy Music perform their greatest hits. Roxy Music are an English art rock band formed in 1971 by Bryan Ferry, who became the group’s lead vocalist and chief songwriter, and bassist Graham Simpson. The other members are Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion). Former members include Brian Eno (synthesizer and & treatments),and Eddie Jobson (synthesizer and violin). Although the band took a break from group activities in 1983, they reunited for a concert tour in 2001, and have toured together intermittently since that time. Roxy Music attained popular and critical success in Europe and Australia during the 1970s and early 1980s, beginning with their debut album, Roxy Music (1972). The band were highly influential, as leading proponents of the more experimental, musically sophisticated element of glam, as well as a significant influence on early English punk music. They also provided a model for many New Wave acts and the experimental electronic groups of the early 1980s. The group is distinguished by their visual and musical sophistication and their preoccupation with style and glamour. Ferry and co-founding member Eno have also had influential solo careers, the latter becoming one of the most significant record producers and collaborators of the late 20th century. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Roxy Music number 98 on its The Immortals, 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list. Their music was influenced by other British artists of the time such as Ferry’s favorite band The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, The Pretty Things, Pink Floyd, The Creation, The Move, Traffic, David Bowie, King Crimson, and Elton John. Eno’s treatments were influenced by the experimental sound of The Velvet Underground.

When three teenaged brothers and their cousin rebelled against their strict, religious Southern upbringing to form Kings of Leon, their humble backstory garnered almost as much attention as their music. Many questioned if they were really related and if rumors of their father being a Pentecostal preacher were true. Since then, the band has achieved worldwide, Grammy® Award-winning success and Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon lies to rest the mystery and myths as it details the rise to fame from their bible belt beginnings.
The documentary kicks off at the annual Followill family reunion in the back woods of Talihina, OK, where the boys return to their roots and unwind with their family. First-time director and Followill friend Stephen C. Mitchell weaves personal home videos, unedited interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of the band’s journey from their small-town beginnings — spent in poverty and touring the circuit with their father, a Pentecostal evangelist minister, and their devout mother — to living the rock star dream. • Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle was one of the outstanding events of the past season.
• As before with the St Matthew Passion, star director Peter Sellars succeeded in creating a staging which made the spiritual and dramatic content of the Passion story even more intensive. The New York Times also praised the “brilliant and energetic” playing of the orchestra, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung the “haunting, almost unsurpassable singing of all those involved.”
• The top-class ensemble of singers was led by Mark Padmore, one of the leading Evangelist interpreters of our day.
• The edition features both a DVD and a Blu-ray version, making it playable on all popular video players. Added to this, it is exclusively presented with a linen hardcover, a comprehensive booklet and numerous photos. The extensive bonus material includes an interview with Simon Rattle and Peter Sellars, an introduction to the work by chorus master Simon Halsey and a voucher for the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Digital Concert Hall.

‘The follow-up [to the St. Matthew Passion], Mr. Sellars’s “St. John Passion,” has been eagerly anticipated. Granted a luxurious amount of rehearsal and a nearly intact cast from the “Matthew” performances … the simmering performance lives up to the high expectations. … The Philharmonic was lucky to have once more the tenor Mark Padmore, one of the great Evangelists of our time, and superb here.’ –The New York Times

‘Sellars is an intrinsically ‘musical’ director…Williams’s Christ all but steals the show – even alongside tenor Mark Padmore whose Evangelist fearlessly interrogates as well as interprets the narrative…this St John Passion has a thought a thought-provoking and unsettling authenticity that can be overwhelming.’ –BBC Music Magazine

Wacken Louder Than Hell (2014) DOCU 720p+1080p MBluRay x264-LiQUiD

Opening 24 Jul 2014

Directed by: Norbert Heitker
Writing credits: Norbert Heitker
For the last 25 years a small town named Wacken, about 40 miles north of Hamburg, Germany, has been the venue for the world’s largest, four-day, heavy metal concert, always the end of July. The 2000 residents welcome 75,000 heavy metal fans who spread out on farmers’ fields (altogether the equivalent of 300 soccer fields) with their tents, cars, huge stages, 800 portable toilettes, and 448 showers. Director Norbert Heitker realized a dream, when, in 2013, he and his team with 18 3D cameras filmed the four-day spectacle. Fans and 140 bands came from 45 countries. He interviews famous heavy metal musicians behind stage. We experience the actual performances (my favorite was Rammstein) complete with special effects: water, fire, confetti, lights – all gigantic. He follows three unknown bands with ambitions to reverse that condition: GOD – The Barbarian Horde from Romania, Nine Treasurer from Mongolia, and Rotten State from Uruguay. They were the winners of an annual Metal Battle in their home countries and were vying against winners from 36 countries to become the international winner. Six fans have been selected as “typical” and indeed they are typical in that they are all very nice, content people – none of the aggressive violence that some people might unknowingly associate with head-banging, wild outfits, and a clinched fist with two fingers in the air (which supposedly represents the horns of the devil, but my metal-loving colleague says actually represents a French fries fork). Cielu comes for the third time from Taiwan; she tells her worried mother that she is on a business trip. Katie and Breanna are from Canada and call it “coming to Waykin” in their English pronunciation. Speaking of English: Non-German speakers will understand at least 80% of the film, since many of the interviews, as well as the songs, are in English with German subtitles.

This is not the first film about W.O.A. (Wacken Open Air). There is, among others, the award-winning Full Metal Village by Sung-Hyung Cho from 2006. However, while Ms. Cho concentrated on the villagers and their reactions and participation, as well as the organization, Heitker gives us pure music; it’s all about the bands (my favorite band name was Eskimo Callboy) and the crowd-surfing fans, who happily swim in the spirit – spirit: an often repeated word to describe the pure bliss of participation. Wacken 3D is excellent and you will find yourself tapping to the beat in spite of yourself. And if you definitely can’t imagine going to the film, much less to Wacken, don’t worry. You’ll have more luck buying a ticket to John Neumeier’s Nijinsky Ballet Gala in June than to any W.O.A. in July. This year’s festival, July 31 to August 2, 2014, sold out a year ago within 48 hours.

• Robbie Williams’ ‘Live In Tallinn’ DVD and Blu-ray release, recorded during the 2013 ‘Take The Crown’ tour on which he thrilled a total of 1.5 million admirers, reasserts his position as the master showman and perhaps the greatest live entertainer of his generation.
