A shy, modest genius, Franz Peter Schubert never held an official musical position, unlike his contemporaries. Living frugally, surrounded by friends from the artistic and literary worlds, Schubert was the focal point of occasional informal artistic gatherings dubbed “Schubertiades”. These meetings were an occasion for him to show off his most recent compositions, foremost among them his lieder. Many of these – he wrote over 600 in all – may very well have taken shape at the guitar; Schubert learned to play the instrument early on in life, and he owned several instruments, which he would play before breakfast, occasionally honouring the impromptu visit of a friend with the performance of a freshly composed lied. Schubert’s financial situation meant he could not afford a piano, so the guitar was one way he could hear how his compositions sounded. Since at the time, the instrument enjoyed great popularity, many music publishers, including Schubert’s publisher Diabelli, offered transcriptions of his works for guitar. It is unsurprising, then, that the first edition of the lieder cycle Die Schöne Müllerin – from which Der Müller und der Bach on this recording is taken – was published with a guitar accompaniment. Uncontestably a master of the lied, Schubert may also be considered as one of the forefathers of the modern song. From the time of Ars nova (new art) – the 14th century musical style of which the poet and musician Guillaume de Machaut was among the principal proponents – lyric forms underwent numerous poetical and stylistic innovations that ultimately led to the first strophic songs for solo voice in the early 16th century. Gradually, lyric forms from the age of the troubadour – when the lute, cousin of the guitar, was a preferred means of expression – converged into the German lied.

There’s no accounting for how great music comes together on record. Sometimes everything is meticulously laid out for months or years in advance, as artists use planning and implementation to their advantage in the creative process; other times, sparks just fly at spur of the moment sessions. Cycling falls into the latter category.

In the past few years singer Sarah Moule has established a rapidly growing reputation as one of Britain’s most exciting new jazz talents. Something’s Gotta Give marries a collection of new Landesman/Wallace material with classic songs by one of the greatest of the American Songbook lyricists, Johnny Mercer. Mercer and Landesman first met in the late 1950s when Landesman and composer TommyWolf were enjoying great success with songs such as ‘Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most’ and ‘The Ballad Of The Sad Young Men’. Mercer was a great admirer of Landesman’s work while she in turn had grown up listening to his songs and absorbing his techniques of incorporating everyday colloquial phrases into song lyrics.

“Johnson’s sterling sound and quicksilver mind place him firmly in the modern jazz tradition.” — DownBeat

From the opening intervals of “Skips,” trumpeter and composer Russ Johnson’s Reveal makes good on the promise inherent in the album’s title. Slyly unveiling interconnected themes and infectious grooves, the chord-less quartet — an unusual front-line of Johnson’s trumpet and Mark Feldman’s violin with drummer Timothy Daisy and bassist Ethan Philion — revels in a vast palette of sonic combinations and permutations. Along the way Johnson and his associates navigate an impressive range of material, from the funky odd-meter groove that suddenly emerges in “Skips” to a masterful plunger elegy for Jamie Branch (“The Long Branch”) and a synthesis of the structured freedom of the AACM with lush post-Romantic harmonies (“The Slow Reveal”). “My entire career has been built on playing music in the cracks between ‘modern jazz’ and more ‘improvised’ musics, says Johnson. “I do not draw a distinction between the two.”

Sepultura – Chaos A.D. (Remastered) (1993/2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Sepultura – Chaos A.D. (Remastered) (1993/2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 47:09 minutes | 1,05 GB | Genre: Thrash Metal
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Rhino Atlantic

“Chaos A.D.” is the fifth studio album by Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura. Although the album is considered Thrash Metal, it saw a stylistic departure from the band’s earlier style, by incorporating a new groove metal sound. In 2017, it was ranked 29th on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time”.

Sepultura truly claimed its place on the heavy-metal world stage with 1993’s „Chaos A.D.“, a focused, dose-of-thunder release that crystallized the Brazilian outfit’s aesthetic. Propulsive rhythms, gravel-voice shouting, and epic guitar riffs drenched in nerve-fraying distortion come together in a perfect marriage here. But while Sepultura’s music was originally inspired by the likes of Metallica and Slayer, „Chaos A.D.“ feels considerably more stripped-down than the music of these mentors–progressive changes and long, showy solos are few and far between. Instead, Sepultura emphasizes fierce, straightforward structures that have more in common with hardcore’s no-nonsense approach than metal’s glamorous flash. The band’s lyrics take a distinctly political turn on „Chaos A.D.“, addressing issues such as state-generated war (“Refuse/Resist”) and biotechnology (“Biotech Is Godzilla”–with lyrics written by Jello Biafra). The weightiness of the themes is well suited to the crushing, apocalyptic sound of the quartet (Igor Cavalera’s drumming alone could bulldoze a medium-sized city), and the intensity of the performances throughout should appeal to fans of both traditional and hardcore metal. This is an essential album from one of the most important aggressive rock bands of the 1990s.

The full length album from Self Esteem, otherwise known as Rebecca Lucy Taylor. We’ve been big fans for a long while and she’s played in Kingston plenty of times as part of Slow Club – we can’t wait to hear how she has transformed her powerhouse songwriting for this solo album.

Since her musical divergence from the band, Rebecca has revelled in unleashing a whole version of herself with no compromises, no reducing herself, no hesitating. She would go on to write the songs that had been rising up inside her all through the years – big songs, that spoke of love and sex and chaos, that brought in huge basslines, gospel choirs, the kind of polished, provocative production she admired on the biggest pop records.

The luminous 3rd album from the acclaimed Korean multi-instrumentalist and composer. A gorgeous meditation on the intersection of music and light. “The beauty of Jiha’s work lies in the spaces she leaves” – The Guardian

How often do we consider light? We revel in the soft wonder of a sunrise or the majesty of a glorious sunset, but all through the day its quality and texture is continually changing, second by second, in ways we rarely register. That beauty is the inspiration for The Gleam, the third album from Korean composer and instrumentalist Park Jiha.

She distils light into sound, from the first flicker of morning on the horizon in “At Dawn” all the way to the moment when full darkness falls again in “Nightfall Dancer,” capturing the essence of it in notes and silence.

While big bands seemed to be fading fast during the late ’50s and early ’60s, bandleader Si Zentner was one of the few to front a successful big band – enjoying both critical and commercial acclaim.

Two highly accomplished musicians playing in a historic venue! For once, it is the place to determine the release and success of a record. The place is an ancient residential palace in the heart of Tuscany, a family property turned into a hotel which has become over the last years a meeting place for artists and musicians. The meeting in this case was between Scott Hamilton, Andrea Pozza, Giulio Cesare and Alfred Kramer on the occasion of a concert of the two musicians held in the music room of the historic venue.

The magic of music and location together has fascinated Giulio Cesare and just a few months later, they were back to the scene of the crime and what you are holding in your hands is the result. Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moraes wrote “a vida é a arte do encontro (life is the art of meeting), but certainly without humans meeting no artform could survive.

Scott Hamilton is a jazz tenor saxophonist associated with swing and mainstream jazz. Hamilton emerged in the 1970s and at the time was considered to be one of the few musicians of real talent who carried the tradition of the classic jazz tenor saxophone in the style of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins as well as Zoot Sims and Don Byas forward. Hamilton has recorded more than 40 albums as a lead.

Jazz pianist Andrea Pozza made his debut at age 13 in the historic jazz club, Genoa. His career spans more than 30 years, has led him to perform in Italy and abroad with real “superstars” of the likes of Harry “Sweet” Edison, Bobby Durham, Chet Baker, Al Grey Scott Hamilton, George Coleman, Charlie Mariano, Lee Konitz, Sal Nistico, Massimo Urbani, Luciano Milanese and many others.

There is something entrancing about the natural cycle of water. There is the constant ebb and flow. Then there are the nearly limitless variations, like the lightness of sprinkling rain, babbling brooks or the relentless force of crashing waves and storms. The variety and fluidity of bodies of water has always fascinated guitarist/composer Scott DuBois and inspires his first solo guitar recording, Summer Water, which is also the first recording on his new record label / publishing company, Watertone Music.
