Vox Luminis has teamed up with the Freiburger Barockorchester again, and together they celebrate music for Ascension Day. This topic inspired great composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, four of whose Ascension cantatas have been preserved. The festive and colourful Cantata BWV 128 was composed towards the end of Bach’s second year in Leipzig. The Ascension Oratorio BWV 11 was written for larger forces and ends with a triumphant chorus. In the case of Georg Philipp Telemann, more than thirty cantatas for Ascension Day alone have survived. The cantata Ich fahre auf zu meinem Vater (I ascend unto my Father) was composed in 1721 and receives its world premiere recording here. Lionel Meunier’s ensemble and the FBO give a fervent rendering of this captivating music with its texts focusing on the afterlife.

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30, was composed in the summer of 1909. The piece was premiered on November 28 of that year in New York City with the composer as soloist, accompanied by the New York Symphony Society under Walter Damrosch. The work has the reputation of being one of the most technically challenging piano concertos in the standard classical piano repertoire.

The Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major was composed by Maurice Ravel between 1929 and 1930, concurrently with his Piano Concerto in G major. The piece was commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein, a concert pianist who had lost his right arm in the First World War.

Le Tombeau de Couperin (The Grave of Couperin) is a suite for solo piano by Maurice Ravel, composed between 1914 and 1917. The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I. Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements.

A suite connection between J. S. Bach (1685-1750) and Charles François Dieupart (1667-1740) is claimed by the young, multi-award-winning baroque ensemble Marsyas Baroque with its debut CD. The juxtaposition of two English Suites by Bach and two Suittes de Clavessin by Dieupart, who is virtually unknown today, shows not only that the French composer is still underestimated, but also that Bach was inspired by the work of his colleague.

“[Bach] speaks to us in his work in such clear terms that we may quite well call these fugues poems. (…) These have warmth, quiet joy, love. And running through all the poems, dressed in different guises, is the main theme, creating order, binding the work as a whole together: it is a safe bond in all its diversity. Over all lies the proximity of death.” (Enzio Forsblom). In this new recording, Bach’s final magnum opus is played by Aapo Häkkinen on a harpsichord built in 1614 by Andreas Ruckers the Elder (1579–?1652) and which belonged to the composer John Blow (1649–1708), organist of Westminster Abbey and former teacher of Henry Purcell. A tradition exists that G.F. Handel had also played this harpsichord.

To be sure, Bach’s Goldberg Variations are intimately, profoundly, a technical work for the harpsichord: in fact, for two harpsichords. But the notes are pure music, and there is nothing stopping artists playing them with, for example, a string quartet. And that is what the Ardeo Quartet is doing here, with great conviction, in a version signed by François Meimoun, which has already been performed in concert many times over. Meimoun, of course, doesn’t “change” a single note, a pitch, a rhythm, a line: rather, he is working on the discourse here, in order to make it a piece for string quartet in every minute, intimate detail. And his effort really pays off, as the “harpsichord” aspect of the work doesn’t show through at all. As a number of the variations are written for two voices, he has fun with supplementary pizzicati and switching from one instrument to another: it’s a real four-hander. It is a safe bet that the listener, including listeners who know the Goldberg Variations by heart – but on harpsichord – will discover countless counterpoints and even a few hidden jokes from Bach which don’t come through on the harpsichord(s).

With this new program recorded for Artalinna in Metz in April 2023, Aline Piboule continues her original musical journeys by associating two unexpected composers, both genius pianists, Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and Olivier Greif (1950-2000), who each one carried out a powerful mystical journey during their existence. Of the two, it brings together two works as beautiful as they are complementary. From Liszt, Ballade No. 2 as then sublimated by Blessing of God in Solitude, coming from poetic and religious harmonies. From Greif, two Sonatas, among his most beautiful works, Three Poems of Li T’ai Po (1977) and the Codex Domini (1994), both played in the critical edition produced by Anne-Élise Thouvenin. Two pages of Bach open and end this recital, filled with grandiose and intense feelings.

Jules Verne was the inspiration for Offenbach’s opéra-féerie, premiered in 1875. The Parisian craze for this type of musical extravaganza stemmed from its impressive stage effects: for Le Voyage dans la Lune, two ballets and some twenty sets took the audience from the Earth to the Moon, successively recreating the Paris Observatory, a working blast furnace and the crater of an erupting volcano. The piece is studded with zany characters and imaginary places: a lunar landscape, a glass palace, mother-of-pearl galleries, etc. The producers even borrowed a dromedary and an ostrich from the zoo at the Jardin d’Acclimatation! To accompany this theatrical display, Offenbach composed a series of colourful, picturesque hit numbers, wittily and energetically performed here by a team of enthusiastic soloists. The Chœur et Orchestre National Montpellier Occitanie are placed under the subtle and precise direction of Pierre Dumoussaud.

C. P. E. Bach and his keyboards für Kenner und Liebhaber allow us to enter into a forgotten world of sound where various keyboard instruments, especially those strings that are struck, mix and mingle, revealing new colours and accents. C. P. E. Bach’s work explores this broad expressive palette that enables him to evoke successively, or sometimes abruptly, the affable and tender grace of the songs to the dry anguish of break-ups, joyful liveliness to sad melancholy.

With three keyboards – a clavichord, a Pantalon and a fortepiano -, exceptional witnesses of this sensitive and resonant universe, Pierre Goy succeeds in unveiling to us the whole teeming, whimsical and innovative dimension of works imbued with deep humanity, born of the great art and true freedom with which C. P. E. Bach successfully combined improvisation and composition.

Bach at his most extrovert and exhilarating: new, period-instrument accounts of the earliest masterpieces in the lineage of keyboard concertos.

Piano concertos from Beethoven to Brahms to Busoni and beyond are all indebted to the example of Bach in his Fifth Brandenburg Concerto, and its liberation of the harpsichord from continuo support to virtuoso soloist, in both the spectacular first-movement cadenza and the one-against-many dramatic narrative which marks a revolutionary break with the concerto-grosso model of collegiate co-operation.
