Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the LSO on this his first release for LSO Live, Stravinsky’s ‘Oedipus Rex’ and ‘Apollon musagte’. Also featured on the release are the gentlemen of the Monteverdi Choir, considered one of the world’s leading choirs, and a mix of international and home-grown soloists including Jennifer Johnston and Stuart Skelton. French actress Fanny Ardant, who has appeared in more than 50 motion pictures, takes the rle of narrator.

‘Oedipus Rex’ and ‘Apollon musagte’ are both ancient Greek-themed works by Stravinsky. The rich string harmonies and textures in the ballet score of ‘Apollon musagte’ are pleasantly mesmerising, expressive and calmly indulgent. In contrast, the dramatic and hauntingly compelling opera-oratorio ‘Oedipus Rex’ is composed of an assemblage of monumental and powerful sounds, such as playful woodwinds, robust brass and agile strings, with magnificent vocals from the choir and soloists.

Sir John Eliot Gardiner is touring a programme of Mendelssohn Symphonies with the LSO to France and Switzerland during January and March, after which the orchestra head, with Daniel Harding, to the Far East. Gardiner’s Monteverdi Choir celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2014 in March with concerts in France and Spain, performing Monteverdi’s ‘Vespers’.

Two classic court operas are brought together to tell the stories of love, be it between gods or royalty in the historic Confidencen Theatre, Sweden.

Venus & Adonis, composed in 1683 by John Blow, is considered the earliest example of English opera. It tells the enchanting story of two mythical lovers and their cruel fate in scenes reaching from light-hearted comedy to heartfelt despair.

Henry Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas from 1689 has become one of the most famous and beloved operas from the Baroque era, with its sumptuous music, dramatic plot and its themes of love, friendship, jealousy, and cruelty. The opera is perhaps best known for Dido’s painfully beautiful lament When I am Laid in Earth.

BBC Music Magazine – June 2023
alluring performances, sumptuous costumes and clever set designs. All the principals are strong, but mezzo-soprano Ida Ränzlöv stands out. Technically flawless, texturally lush and dramatically compelling, Ränzlöv unleashes the roiling passions of her two title characters.

Gramophone Magazine – May 2023
William Relton, the director, never puts a foot wrong…The orchestra of period instruments – the pitch is a semitone below today’s standard – can’t be faulted.

Opera – July 2023
Unpretentious and lacking star performers, it achieves a quality of performance and level of integrity and period style that in recent times have not infrequently been beyond its more august neighbour a few miles away.

John Lennon – Signature Box (2010/2014) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 07:30:08 minutes | 8,88 GB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © EMI Catalogue

Originally released in 2010, the John Lennon Signature Box is an acclaimed collection that includes the eight remastered albums and an EP of Lennon’s non-album singles, all newly remastered in hi-res 96kHz/24bit digital resolution, plus several rarities available exclusively within the box set in 44.1kHz/24bit digital resolution.

The crown jewel in Apple/EMI’s extensive 2010 John Lennon remasters series, Signature Box contains all of the solo studio albums Lennon released during his lifetime (minus the trio of experimental duet LPs with Yoko Ono released on Apple and Zapple), his first posthumous album Milk and Honey, a disc of non-LP singles, a disc of home demos, but not the 2010 showcase item Double Fantasy Stripped Down, which is available only as a bonus on the indvidual reissue of Double Fantasy. It is, in other words, close enough to complete to perhaps invite a little bit of quibbling about what is absent — Live Peace in Toronto could fit in nicely with this batch and there are outtakes from Menlove Ave missing but the real niggling comes with the home demo disc, which emphasizes demos and alternate takes of songs from Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, leaving behind demos of songs Lennon gave away, including “I’m the Greatest” and “Goodnight Vienna,” which he handed over to Ringo, and songs that never made it to one of his records. Ultimately, this is nitpicking because Signature Box is handsomely produced and contains the best-sounding Lennon remasters — remastered by the team that did the acclaimed 2009 Beatles remasters, using the original mixes, not the recent remixes — which is enough to make this more than worthwhile for the serious Lennon fan.

PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 46:22 minutes | Scans included | 1,88 GB

Walls and Bridges was recorded during John Lennon’s infamous “lost weekend,” as he exiled himself in California during a separation from Yoko Ono. Lennon’s personal life was scattered, so it isn’t surprising that Walls and Bridges is a mess itself, containing equal amounts of brilliance and nonsense. Falling between the two extremes was the bouncy Elton John duet “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night,” which was Lennon’s first solo number one hit. Its bright, sunny surface was replicated throughout the record, particularly on middling rockers like “What You Got” but also on enjoyable pop songs like “Old Dirt Road.” However, the best moments on Walls and Bridges come when Lennon is more open with his emotions, like on “Going Down on Love,” “Steel and Glass,” and the beautiful, soaring “No. 9 Dream.” Even with such fine moments, the album is decidedly uneven, containing too much mediocre material like “Beef Jerky” and “Ya Ya,” which are weighed down by weak melodies and heavy over-production. It wasn’t a particularly graceful way to enter retirement.

John Anderson was struggling with the issue that is every musician’s nightmare: in the midst of a serious illness that had forced him off the road, his hearing disappeared. FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 01:14:24 minutes | 785 MB | Genre: Indie Folk

Like anything that comes out of the mouth of Father John Misty — the hipster gadfly persona Josh Tillman adopted after leaving the Fleet Foxes in 2012 — it can be difficult to discern whether the title of Pure Comedy is intended sincerely. Father John Misty cherishes his public role as a prankster, a stance that can sometimes seem at odds with his grand artistic ambitions. And, make no mistake about it, Pure Comedy is indeed a very grand record, an old-fashioned major statement designed to evoke memories of classic long-players from the ’70s. Often, its stately march and decorated pianos call to mind early Elton John, suggesting the hazy vistas of Madman Across the Water. This shift toward progressive pop underscores how Father John Misty has streamlined his music since I Love You, Honeybear, whittling away the minor feints toward modern music and stripping away lingering rustic folk influences. He’s now a postmodern troubadour, halfway between a song poet and a baroque craftsman. Where his antecedents (and clear influences) Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman sculpted their music and words, Tillman isn’t quite so restrained. He’s a maximalist, overstuffing his lyrics with florid imagery and letting his songs spill out at lengths up to 13 minutes. From a certain angle, all this can play like an elaborate stunt — particularly when he baits the listener with lines about “bedding Taylor Swift” — but there’s a strong melancholy undercurrent to Pure Comedy that suggests Father John Misty is something more than a jester. All of this can be felt through the music itself — through the melodies and movement, through the arrangement and production — and that, more than the verbal gymnastics, is why Pure Comedy delivers upon much of Father John Misty’s outlandish promises. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Though it was recorded in an assortment of rooms and hotels across California, Nevada, Texas, and Oklahoma, Tourist feels remarkably durable. Abney sees it as a companion piece to his 2020 Familiar Ground album but there’s a lightness here that was less pronounced previously, a kind of woozy solace you find in travel, in embracing the unpredictable. Using his personal portable studio, this is no troubadour with a busted guitar story, instead, Abney grows his songs, weaving drum machines, samplers, and synthesizers into the songs, fleshing the recordings out with sole collaborator John Moreland, who performed his parts and mixed from his own studio, using the internet to create the album over even longer distances.

With Pure BS, Blake Shelton proves he is one of the country music artists who are in it for the long haul and cannot rest on his laurels. From the cover photo to the last track the listener can easily be startled by what is on offer here. As his first three albums showcased, Shelton has always had a powerful baritone range and can write and sing drinking, heartbreak, and driving songs all night. Working with producer Bobby Braddock, Shelton forged a sound that showcased him as a country music hell raiser who had a tender side, but he did it all with one voice. On Pure BS (a great double entendre), Shelton worked not only with Braddock, but with producers Paul Worley and Brent Rowan as well. What the sum total of these 11 songs reveals is that Shelton is really and truly a singer of modern country music. The opener is a Southern rocker with napalm guitars called “This Can’t Be Good” (a tale with a humorous twist). It’s the Shelton everyone knows, but he reaches for notes he hasn’t hit before. “The More I Drink” is one of the first sobriety songs since Ray Wylie Hubbard’s classic “Hey, That’s Alright” to actually make sense even as it makes the listener laugh. (It’s interesting that they are both from small towns in Oklahoma) Then there’s the bittersweet “I Don’t Care,” with steel guitars and strings, where Shelton digs deep into the heart of his voice where searing honesty, even as it begins in lying to oneself, comes to the fore as he digs deeper into the lyric than he ever has before, and yes, that’s saying something. “Back There Again” is the most haunting and moving loving and leaving songs Shelton’s ever recorded. Written by Tom Douglas, it’s on a par with “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” Transformations, turnarounds, realizations and reflection are at the heart of Pure BS. That’s not to say that there aren’t the trademark Shelton rollicking country-rock tunes here; there are, in the aforementioned “This Can’t Be Good,” “The More I Drink,” and to a slightly lesser degree “I Have Been Lonely,” with its acoustic and electric guitar shuffles and popping snare drums. But even in these songs, Shelton’s ability as a singer (with help from Rachel Proctor on harmony vocals) to get the message across over the music is rather startling. His previous three recordings offered him a solid ground to get this one across. To build on what he’s accomplished as an artist he’s reached inside himself to pull these songs off so convincingly. The album ends with “The Last Country Song,” written by Shelton and Braddock. It’s a stellar, hard-driving country-rock song that offers a very insightful view of how music itself is changing as the landscape changes as corporate interests swallow up the land the music got made on, with help from John Anderson and George Jones quoting from their own songs “Swingin'” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Pure BS is the album Shelton’s been waiting to make his entire career and gives us an absolutely stunning new view of an established artist who is here to stay. – Thom Jurek

Country superstar/’Voice’ coach Blake Shelton is all about getting personal on ‘Based On A True Story…,’ his seventh studio album to date. ‘Every song on the album, I’ve either been through those situations, or I’m going through them right now,’ Shelton admitted. Among the most relevant in Shelton’s life at the moment are cuts like ‘Doin’ What She Likes’ and ‘Ten Times Crazier.’ If fans felt like they got to know the real Blake on the hit NBC show, they’ll get another close look with this batch of songs.

The new album is also gearing up for a strong showing on the charts. Lead single ‘Sure Be Cool If You Did’ currently sits at No. 24 on the Hot 100, its highest position in its 10 weeks on the chart. But there are plenty of other potential hits on ‘True Story’

When Paul Janeway learned he was going to be a father he decided to scribe his thoughts—joy, fear, confusion—as messages to his then-unborn daughter. Those letters became Angels in Science Fiction, the stunning 5th LP from St. Paul and The Broken Bones. Produced by Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price) at the legendary Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis. It finds the band stretching further out, building on the shadowy psychedelia and intricate, experimental R/B of the The Alien Coast.
