“Do you feel what I feel too?” Brijean Murphy floats the question at the start of Feelings, the full-length Ghostly International debut from Brijean, her collaborative project with Doug Stuart. Guided by a lush mix of charismatic keyboard chords, grooving bass lines, and radiant bongo-driven rhythms, the “Day Dreaming” lyric doubles as an invitation and a statement of intention. Brijean want you to move, physically, mentally, dimensionally; this is dance music for the mind, body, and soul. With Feelings, they’ve manifested a gentle collective space for respite, for self-reflection, for self-care, for uninhibited imagination and new possibilities. The album cultivates a specific vibe, a softness Murphy has come to call “romancing the psyche.”

Ana Caram is an excellent singer and guitarist of Brazilian music, but this set lacks any real surprises. She only plays guitar on one song, sticking to singing while being backed by a rhythm section and the saxophones of Paulo Levi. The selections all date from the 1960s (other than her original “Pura Luz”) and Caram is mostly cast in the role of Astrud Gilberto, performing Jobim tunes (including “Desafinado,” “Corcovado,” and “Triste”) and other tunes from the era, including “Blue Bossa,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and Baden Powell’s “So Por Amor.” The results are pleasant but very predictable, with no real chances being taken nor any fresh light shone on the veteran warhorses.

Recorded: Pierce Hall, All Souls Unitarian Church, Washington D.C., February 13, 1962.

Jazz Samba is a bossa nova LP by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, released on the Verve label on April 20, 1962.
Jazz Samba was the first major bossa-nova album on the American jazz scene. It was the real start of the bossa-nova excitement in America, which peaked in the mid-1960s. Though Stan Getz was the featured star of the album, it was very strongly inspired and designed by the guitarist Charlie Byrd. They were joined by two alternating bassists —Keter Betts and Charlie’s brother, Gene (Joe) Byrd— and two drummers —Buddy Deppenschmidt and Bill Reichenbach— for the recording at All Souls Church, Unitarian in Washington, D.C. on February 13, 1962, and it was released on April 20, that year as Verve LP V6-8432.

Best known as an innovative drummer who helped to define a particular hard bop, soul jazz and organ trio sound during the mid-1960s, Grady Tate was also an accomplished vocalist. His drum sound can be heard on the classic Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery albums recorded on the Verve label in the 1960s. As a sideman he has also played with Lionel Hampton, Grant Green, Boogaloo Joe Jones, Lena Horne, Astrud Gilberto, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Blossom Dearie, Chris Connor, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Cal Tjader, Peggy Lee, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Tom Rapp, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Stanley Turrentine, Charles Earland, Quincy Jones, Stan Getz, and Simon & Garfunkle. As a vocalist, Tate became popular as the voice behind many of the tunes in the Schoolhouse Rock series, including “I Got Six,” “Naughty Number Nine,” and “Fireworks.” Presented here is Tate’s classic 1974 album “Movin’ Day,” which showcases his prowess as a great vocalist, covering tunes from Van Morrison to Jimmy Cliff in his inimitable laid back style.

Stan Getz almost single-handedly brought the bossa nova sound to the United States and helped create an international craze thanks to a series of albums he made in the early 1960s. On these albums, Getz teamed up with Brazilian bossa nova musicians and composers, masters of the craft like Antonio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto and Gilberto’s wife, vocalist Astrud who would become world famous thanks to The Girl From Ipanema. This album, the second in the series, predates that song and was unusual for a bossa nova album of the time in that it was entirely instrumental, nonetheless very successful. Conductor Gary McFarland deserves a great deal of the credit for that success due to his magnificent big band arrangements.

Ever since the late 1950s bossa-nova revolution, Brazil’s influence on French music has been undeniable. Pierre Barouh, Georges Moustaki, and a vast array of lesser known artists, all made the Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB) an axis of promotion at the service of a cool and metaphysical, modern and mixed Brazilian lifestyle. Some were seduced by the poetic languor of the bossa, some were looking for fun, and others just loved the American hybridization of jazz-bossa, jazz-samba. With emotion, arrangements for violin and supple guitar licks, bossa nova rapidly changed. A transformation that can be heard in the Tchic Tchic: French Bossa Nova 1963-1974 compilation, the result of a cultural reappropriation, which traveled through the United States and supplemented itself in France. A musical revolution that has remained significant, bossa nova was born in Rio. From 1956 to 1961, Brazil lived through its golden years. In five years, the country had invented its modernist style. American jazzmen then took over. In particular, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and guitarist Charlie Byrd. In November 1962, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs funded a “Bossa-Nova” concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, inviting the genre’s pioneers. In Brazil, the 1964 military coup quickly ended this euphoria. The destructive atmosphere that ensued pushed many Brazilian musicians to leave, if not to exile. Thus, Tom Jobim, Sergio Mendes, and Joao Gilberto arrived to the United States. In New York, Joao Gilberto met saxophonist Stan Getz. At the time, he was married to the Bahianese Astrud Weinert Gilberto, who had a German father. She had never sung before, but she knew how to speak English. Getz therefore asked her to replace her husband on “The Girl From Ipanema”. The Getz/Gilberto record with Tom Jobim on piano, was released in March 1964. Phil Ramone, the “pope of pop” was in charge of sound. Bossa nova arrived in Paris through the classic “guitar-voice” channel. But France loved jazz and Paris had already welcomed its American contributors. Features Les Masques, Isabelle Aubret, Christianne Legrand, Jean Constantin, Billy Nencioli & Baden Powell, Marpessa Dawn, Jean-Pierre Sabar, Sophia Loren, Isabelle, Sylvia Fels, Frank Gérard, Ann Sorel, Charles Level, Andrea Parisy, Audrey Arno, Aldo Frank, Clarinha, Hit Parade des Enfants, Jean-Pierre Lang, Magalie Noël, and Françoise Legrand.
