June 27th, 2007 at Amoeba music – the most popular record store in Hollywood – Paul McCartney steps on stage for an undisclosed, 90 minute performance, to a small but eager crowd. The venue is more like the Cavern Club than Wembley, which might have prompted this introductory statement: “Welcome to Amoeba – it’s got to be the most surreal gig ever. The management has asked us to point out no shoplifting please”. Cue 21 songs, from his solo discography as well as his catalog as a Beatle. Four of these recordings would be released the same year in a limited edition: Only Mama Knows, C Moon, That Was Me, and I Saw Her Standing There. In 2009, these were republished in a CD version. But 17 other songs had yet to be made available to the public – until today. Backed by a very solid band, with Dave Arch (piano), Rusty Anderson (guitar), Brian Ray (bass) and Abe Laboriel, Jr. (drums), Macca is given free reign to sing his heart out. During the opener Drive My Car, his voice is strong and self-assured; as the show goes on, it is noticeably tinged with emotion. On an exceptional performance of The Long and Winding Road, the moment is crystallized – the sheer adoration of the crowd, and the clear enjoyment Paul seems to be taking out of the performance, clearly lend some sort of magic to the whole thing. Live at Amoeba 2007 is a grand slam from start to finish – usual business for Sir Paul McCartney. – Alexis Renaudat

The Iranian conductor and composer Alexander Rahbari grew up with and trained in traditional Persian music with its most influential maestros. His eight symphonic poems, My Mother Persia, of which this is Volume 1 of 2, are full of melodies, rhythms and improvisations in these traditional styles, brought to life with the colours of modern orchestration. The first of these is an emotional violin concerto in which the soloist plays the role of the Nohe Khan, usually a tenor who sings in traditional Persian style at various religious ceremonies. Mother’s Tears refers to a gathering of orphans and to Rahbari’s own experiences of tragedy, contrasting with a subtext of mischief in Children’s Prayer.

We are only just beginning to rediscover the works of Louis Spohr (1784-1859), who was not only a composer, but also a virtuoso violinist, possibly the greatest conductor of his time, and a renowned teacher – a man who played a leading role in musical life in Germany in the nineteenth century. His works – almost three hundred, covering many genres – bear the mark of Viennese Classicism, but his harmonic research announces the advent of the Romantic period.
Ten or so of his compositions require the clarinet, including four concertos, belonging to two different periods in his life. Wishing to be as faithful as possible to the original works for this recording on the Alpha label, the clarinettist and conductor Paul Meyer approached the Internationale Louis Spohr Gesellschaft in Kassel, which possesses the original manuscripts of the Fourth Concerto, the sketches for nos. 3 and 4, and copies of the manuscripts of nos. 1 to 3.
This magnificent performance by Paul Meyer, soloist and conductor, with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, gives us an opportunity to discover (or rediscover) these very fine works.

George Thomson of Edinburgh, a notable promoter of Scottish music, encouraged settings of his nation’s folk songs. In particular, he found a rich source of arrangements in Vienna, where he commissioned first Haydn and then Beethoven to set a large sequence of poems, including those of Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott. Thomson envisaged simple works, agreeable to amateurs, but Beethoven found it impossible to compose within such limitations and his settings, which include Irish and Welsh songs, with the accompaniment of strings and piano, have proved perennially popular.
