Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble – Couldn’t Stand The Weather (1984) [MFSL 2010] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble – Couldn’t Stand The Weather (1984) [MFSL 2010]

Stevie Ray Vaughan’s second album, Couldn’t Stand the Weather, pretty much did everything a second album should do: it confirmed that the acclaimed debut was no fluke, while matching, if not bettering, the sales of its predecessor, thereby cementing Vaughan’s status as a giant of modern blues. So why does it feel like a letdown? Perhaps because it simply offers more of the same, all the while relying heavily on covers. Of the eight songs, half are covers, while two of his four originals are instrumentals — not necessarily a bad thing, but it gives the impression that Vaughan threw the album together in a rush, even if he didn’t. Nevertheless, Couldn’t Stand the Weather feels a bit like a holding pattern, since there’s no elaboration on Double Trouble’s core sound and no great strides forward, whether it’s in Vaughan’s songwriting or musicianship. Still, as holding patterns go, it’s a pretty enjoyable one, since Vaughan and Double Trouble play spiritedly throughout the record. With its swaggering, stuttering riff, the title track ranks as one of Vaughan’s classics, and thanks to a nuanced vocal, he makes W.C. Clark’s “Cold Shot” his own. The instrumentals — the breakneck Lonnie Mack-styled “Scuttle Buttin’” and “Stang’s Swang,” another effective demonstration of Vaughan’s jazz inclinations — work well, even if the original shuffle “Honey Bee” fails to make much of an impression and the cover of “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” is too reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix’s original. So, there aren’t many weaknesses on the record, aside from the suspicion that Vaughan didn’t really push himself as hard as he could have, and the feeling that if he had, he would have come up with something a bit stronger.

With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan ignited the blues revival of the ’80s. Vaughan drew equally from bluesmen like Albert King, Otis Rush and Hubert Sumlin and rock & roll players like Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as the stray jazz guitarist like Kenny Burrell, developing a uniquely eclectic and fiery style that sounded like no other guitarist, regardless of genre. Vaughan bridged the gap between blues and rock like no other artist had since the late ’60s. For about seven years, Stevie Ray Vaughan was the leading light in American blues, consistently selling out concerts while his albums regularly went gold. His tragic death in 1990 only emphasized his influence in blues and American rock & roll. This is classic Stevie Ray Vaughan, meticulously remastered from the analog tapes by New York’s Sterling Sound. In each set you’ll receive Texas Flood, Couldn’t Stand the Weather, Soul to Soul, In Step, plus the posthumous classics Family Style and The Sky Is Crying.

About this reissue from Analogue Productions
We’ve gone completely all-out for this project. We’ve used the original 30 inches-per-second, half-inch analog master tapes for all of these studio albums as well as for the bonus tracks included on the SACDs. Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound cut the lacquers for the LPs using the ultimate VMS 80 cutting lathe. Gary Salstrom handled the plating and the vinyl was pressed of course at Quality Record Pressings. Andy Aledort, senior editor for Guitar World, wrote the liners with contributions from Stevie Ray Vaughan biographer Craig Hopkins. This set includes a deluxe booklet. And all of the records are housed in a deluxe box. This box set will exceed your expectations, whether you’re an LP or SACD enthusiast. We guarantee it.

In March 2021, The Linda Lindas went viral thanks to their song “Racist, Sexist Boy”—a sludgy, two-ton cathartic response to a classmate who said his dad told him to stay away from Asian people as the pandemic was heating up. When social media saw the band was made of four girls—all Asian, Latinx, or both—now aged 11 to 17, playing in a Los Angeles library, it was one of the most inspirational moments of the year. But the Linda Lindas aren’t just novelty. And, it turns out, that all-important Riot Grrrl-meets-L7 song is kind of an anomaly on their debut album, a thrill ride of fizzy, unbridled pop punk and power pop in the vein of the Runaways and the Muffs. The title song is gloriously big and fun, loaded with fat bass, emo-pop guitar lines and a giddy, rushed chorus; they even manage to make throw-pillow platitudes (“We’ll dance like nobody’s there/ We’ll dance without any cares”) sound anthemic. “Oh!” is a celebration of chunky, late ’70s hard rock, veering from spit verses to an infectious chorus. “Talking To Myself” delivers all the pop-punk hallmarks—punchy drums, fizzy melody, pure adrenaline—plus honest lyrics that apply to all ages: “When you talk to yourself/ Do you think about the things that flood your head full of doubt/ Like when you cannot stop stressing/ About all the wrong directions.” “Fine,” meanwhile, rumbles with hormonal fury (The Bags come to mind), each word delivered like a crash: “It’s! Not! Fine!” “Nino”—about a savage pet cat, a “killer of mice and rats”—channels the antsiness of a mosh pit just before it blows. “Remember” is ’50s greaser pop punk, each syllable of the promise “tomorrow will be bigger-brighter-better” like a fist in the air. It has that sweet swoon of The Regrettes, Beach Bunny, or Best Coast. The latter is an apropos reference given the band’s history. The four—Eloise Wong, sisters Mila and Lucia de la Garza, and Bela Salazar—started off as a pick-up band of kids playing with Kristin Kontrol of Dum Dum Girls for a music festival, where they guested with Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino as well as Karen O. (Mila and Lucia’s dad, mixer and engineer extraordinaire Carlos de la Garza, who has worked with Jimmy Eat World, Paramore, Bad Religion and more, is a producer on Growing Up.) But it’s the girls’ personal experiences and touches, not their famous connections, that make their music so appealing. Bela, a high school senior, wrote and sings “Cuántas Veces,” the twinkling disco-ball sway, in Spanish and has said, “I grew up on rock and Spanish music and bossa nova and all the different types of Latin music, so I really wanted to bring that into the record.” “What if magic was real?” asks one song. This youthful magic is as real as it gets. – Shelly Ridenour

Deliciously strange and eccentric, the Flaming Lips are one of these bands from the 80s alternative rock scene that have survived remarkably well. Their psychedelic and quirky tendencies are as surprising as they are fascinating. With these madmen from Oklahoma, everything takes a different shape. A sort of mix between exaggerated distortions and sped-up headbanging, or even role-play in a world ruled by hallucinogenic mushrooms. That’s the kind of atmosphere these rock geniuses have maintained from 1983 to this day, and that caught the eye of label Rhino Records. For the first time, the entirety of the Flaming Lips recordings from 1986 to 1990 for the label Restless Records are being released in a remastered version (by Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins and David Fridmann, the band’s long-time producer) and gathered on six albums under the title Seeing The Unseeable. A huge collection that includes four of their best albums: Hear It Is, Oh My Gawd, Telepathic Surgery and In a Priest Driven Ambulance. And as a bonus, an album filled with rare gems: The Mushroom Tapes.

Great American Painting is the rare album that shines a bright light on all that’s wrong in the world but somehow still channels a galvanizing sense of hope. With equal parts nuanced observation and raw outpouring of feeling, the Philadelphia-based band confront a constellation of problems eroding the American ideal (gentrification, gun violence, the crushing weight of late capitalism), ornamenting every track with their explosive yet elegant breed of indie-rock/post-punk. Threading that commentary with intense self-reflection, Great American Painting ultimately fulfills a mission The Districts first embraced upon forming as teenagers in small-town Pennsylvania: an urge to create undeniably cathartic music that obliterates hopelessness and invites their audience along in dreaming up a far better future.

In March 2020, Tahiti 80 had a plan to start recording their new album in the studio. That plan, of course, along with everything else in the world, got derailed. But the five-piece group was resilient and resourceful. They quickly shifted to a socially distanced plan B that included file swapping and virtual sessions, all refereed by producer Julien Vignon. The result, due for release in March 2022, is the buoyant Here With You, a collection of eleven upbeat songs that unfold like a prescription for a post-pandemic panacea.

End, the enigmatic seventh album by Explosions in the Sky, was inspired by darkness, but became a loud, dramatic, wild rumination on life and death.

“Our starting point was the concept of an ending – death, or the end of a friendship or relationship. Every song comes from a story, or an idea one of us has had that we’ve all expanded on and made its own world. Maybe it’s our nature, but we kept feeling that the album title was ultimately open to a lot more interpretation – the end of a thing or a time can mean a stop, but it can also mean a beginning, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in comparison to what it becomes next,” says the band about the album.

Frank Peter Zimmermann – Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 2 (2023) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:01:58 minutes | 1,17 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © BIS

Since the mid-1980s, Frank Peter Zimmermann has earned recognition as one of the world’s leading violinists, admired not only for his technical skill and interpretive intelligence, but also for his versatility in a wide-ranging repertoire. His extensive discography ranges from Bach concertos and Beethoven sonatas to works by composers such as Martinů, Ligeti, Magnus Lindberg and Brett Dean. He waited until the fourth decade of his career, however, to take on Bach’s Sei solo a Violino senza Basso accompagnato, the six sonatas and partitas for solo violin. The first disc (BIS-2577) dedicated to this absolute pinnacle in the repertoire for the instrument was released in February 2022 to great critical acclaim. Now comes the much-awaited conclusion to this collection. Zimmermann compares these works to ‘a mighty tree, which protects me and crushes me at the same time’, the music giving him hope and strength at the same time as it confronts him with his limits as a violinist. On this new release, he now offers us the Sonata No. 1 in G minor, as well as the B minor Partita No. 1 and the Sonata No. 3 in C major.

The imagined sounds of mass protest run through composer Emily Howard’s and poet Michael Symmons Roberts’s The Anvil, commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and the Manchester International Festival to mark the bicentenary of the 1819 Peterloo massacre, in which crowds protesting for universal suffrage in St Peter’s Fields, Manchester, were brutally crushed.

To a solo soprano who narrates and remembers and a baritone who seems caught in the action, the work adds the immense forces of four choirs – each given music tailored to its particular capabilities, from professional to amateur – and the BBC Philharmonic to ask: what future was being forged in the tragic events that took place that day?

A second collaboration between Howard and Symmons Roberts, Elliptics, is quieter, more elegiac: a meditation on love and death, and on what we hope will survive.

Led by musical director Scotty Barnhart, the Count Basie Orchestra keeps Basie’s unmistakable style alive and thriving around the world.

In the great traction of the Basie Swings albums comes this explosive album of collaborations with some of the greatest living blues and jazz artists, Basie Swings The Blues. In preparation for these sessions, Barnhart took a pilgrimage to the Mississippi Delta to immerse himself in the land where blues began. The resulting album is joyful mix of downhome blues with the deep swing and sophistication that only The Count Basie Orchestra can provide. As Count Basie famously once said, “our blues will make your blues go away.”

Produced by Barnhart along with Grammy-winning producer John Burk (Ray Charles Genius Love Company), and Grammy-winning drummer/producer Steve Jordan (The Rolling Stones), the album brings together Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Keb’ Mo’, Shemekia Copeland, Robert Cray, Charlie Musselwhite, Betty LaVette, Ledisi, George Benson, and others to bring the blues and swing back together for a set that jumps and jives with an energy not heard since Louis Jordan and T-Bone Walker lit up stages in the ’40s and ’50s.
