The English composer Christopher Wright, born in Suffolk in 1954, declares that he is ‘not fettered by fashion, style, ideology or gimmickry or some insatiable desire to be original’; instead, he writes music that aims to communicate directly with the listener – although it can also be thorny and challenging. This first-ever album of his sacred choral music reveals it to be in the British-cathedral tradition of composers like Benjamin Britten, William Mathias, Bernard Rose and Malcolm Williamson: the melodic lines may on occasion be angular and the harmonies sometimes tart, but Wright’s concern with immediacy of expression ensures that the ‘personal prayers’ embodied in these pieces can be readily understood and appreciated.

Canterbury Cathedral’s first ever all-girl choir will be releasing its debut album on Decca Records on 1st December. A female-led production, Christmas with Canterbury Cathedral Girls’ Choir is a major milestone in the Cathedral’s rich 1,400-year history and sees the iconic establishment expand its choral tradition for the 21st century. The album features beloved Christmas carols as well as a new composition by composer Rebecca Dale. The project is led by producer Anna Barry.
Often described as ‘England in stone’, Canterbury Cathedral is intrinsically linked to the country’s history and is home to the Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Reverend Justin Welby, who wrote the foreword for the album. He says of the choir, “Since their formation in 2014, the girls have established themselves as a regular and natural part of the worshiping community at Canterbury Cathedral. By their singing, they lift the hearts of countless visitors and pilgrims to Canterbury, as they lift my heart as I worship with them.”
The new album features stunning renditions of traditional Christmas carols, including ‘Silent Night’, ‘Away In A Manger’ and ‘O Holy Night’. Composer Rebecca Dale has also written a brand new choral piece for the album entitled ‘All Is Still’ – this is the world premiere recording.

Cantate Domino, a 2015 release on Deutsche Grammophon, is the first commercial studio recording of the Sistine Chapel Choir, led by Massimo Palombella, which has until now been heard only in live recordings of varying quality. The program is a mix of Gregorian chants and motets that have long been a part of the Sistine Chapel’s liturgical music, including works by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Orlande de Lassus, Felice Anerio, Tomás Luis de Victoria, and perhaps most famously, Gregorio Allegri, whose Miserere was once exclusively performed by the choir. This recording features the original fauxbourdon version of the Miserere, found in the Sistine Codex of 1661, which differs from later arrangements and adaptations in its austere simplicity and lack of abbellimenti or ornamentation, such as the famous “top C” passage which many might expect. The sound of the antiphonally divided choir may seem lopsided in this recording, since the remote singers are rather soft and distant in the chapel’s echoic acoustics, and the long reverberation time tends to blur their words, so following the enclosed text is helpful. ~~ AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson
