Love’s Silhouette contains 14 tracks that swing and sing in the easy-flowing and genre-crossing style that has made Pieces of a Dream a staple in contemporary jazz. The group, who celebrated 25 years in the music business in 2001, continues to push stylistic boundaries and add more hard grooves, a few Latin flavors, and more funk than on their previous chart-topping hit, Acquainted With the Night.

“Phil Woods with Strings?” you may ask with a bit of apprehension. An album with strings, which is inevitably heavily arranged, is always a risky proposition for a jazz musician whose art depends above all on spontaneous improvisation. But Phil Woods, arguably the best alto sax player alive today, has done it many times in his 55-year career. What distinguishes this album is the core group: Wood’s regular quartet featuring the young and brilliant pianist Bill Charlap. Also, they decided to go with a string quintet (two violins, two violas and one cello) instead of a larger string section. This probably worked to make the ensemble agile and more spontaneous. The first violinist even takes a few solos! Seven standard gems are sandwiched by two original compositions by Woods: “And When We’re Young” and “Solitude,” the latter of which is not to be confused with the more famous Duke Ellington tune. Frequent collaborator Bryin Lynch does not play his horn here but contributed a few arrangements. All in all, this is a charming album filled with many tender moments and nice sound. Woods’ playing is inspired and varied arrangements keep the program interesting. Bill Charlap helps his boss with a few beautiful solos as well.

Genre: Jazz

Phil Woods is right at home during these 2002 sessions at Red Rock Recording Studio near his home in Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania. With his regular group (Bill Charlap, Steve Gilmore, and Bill Goodwin) minus trumpeter Brian Lynch, Woods adds strings conducted by his old friend Eric Doney on this collection of ballads. “And When We’re Young” is the alto saxophonist’s tribute to the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated around the time it was written. The leader’s lush alto gives way to a brisk Latin-flavored passage featuring powerful solos by violinist Andy Stein and Charlap on piano, while Woods humorously detours into “Nature Boy” upon his return. The strings introduce a lively arrangement of “It Never Entered My Mind,” and another favorite of the alto saxophonist, “If I Should Lose You.” Unlike many jazz recordings with strings, they complement rather than overwhelm the musicians. But it is almost impossible for a Phil Woods-led date to turn out less than excellent.

A die-hard bopper, alto saxophonist Phil Woods nonetheless manages to push the boundaries of straight-ahead hard bop on Souvenirs. As far as the ’90s go, this is one of Woods’ best. This version of Woods’ quintet, most notably featuring trumpeter Brian Lynch, is a solid entity with much forward momentum. Lynch, a member of Art Blakey’s last Jazz Messengers lineup, is easily one the best trumpeters around, displaying a knack for interesting note choices and lines that border on the progressive. Woods sounds thoroughly engaged throughout, attacking each tune with his characteristic fire.

Phil Woods, the searing Alto saxophonist and clarinetist, calls his occasional expanded combo “the Little Big Band”. Here’s To My Lady, the octet’s first recording, offers up a hot band with inventive solos and big-sounding, imaginative ensembles. This is an album with no let downs.

Phil Woods – Chasin’ The Bird (1998) [Japan 2018] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Phil Woods is at the peak of his powers during these 1997 sessions for Venus, leading his regular quintet (Brian Lynch, Bill Charlap, Steve Gilmore, and Bill Goodwin) through a set of songs he’s played for decades, along with some originals likely written for this outing. The alto saxophonist navigates Charlie Parker’s “Chasin’ the Bird” and “Charlie’s Wig” with the finesse of the master that he is. The interplay between the leader and Lynch in the former tune indicates that the younger musician is a force to be reckoned with. They also work well together in the dissonant “Israel,” long a favorite of boppers. Woods’ unaccompanied introduction to “Everything Happens to Me” is simply breathtaking. Woods is also a fairly prolific composer. “Autumn Thieves” is a barely disguised reworking of the standard “Autumn Leaves” (also indicating his love of puns in the title) that swings nicely. The source of the rapid fire “Clinicology” is a little less obvious at first (“Cherokee”), though little doubt remains once the quintet gets cooking. Lynch contributed “Tribute to Blue,” a strutting, yet very lyrical hard bop vehicle. Charlap, who has since left the group to lead his own trio, is one of the greatest pianists of his generation. Gilmore and Goodwin have continuously worked with Woods since 1975; enough said.

The Young Bloods is an album by trumpeter Donald Byrd and saxophonist Phil Woods recorded in 1956 and released on the Prestige label. Despite the presence of co-leader Donald Byrd, Woods wrote four of the six tracks and dominates the solo offerings, hence the recording date is attributed to Woods, which conveniently also preserves the integrity of my alphabetic by artist filing system.

Phil Lesh and Friends – There And Back Again (2002) MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

After releasing Love Will See You Through, a live album featuring onetime guests like Jorma Kaukonen, Phil Lesh organized a permanent touring and recording band under the moniker Phil Lesh & Friends. This quintet, with an instrumentation that replicated the Grateful Dead’s except for the inclusion of only one drummer, featured former Allman Brothers Band guitarists Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring, former Zen Tricksters keyboardist Rob Barraco, and former Bruce Hornsby & the Range drummer John Molo. There and Back Again is this unit’s first studio album and, not surprisingly, it sounds like a cross between the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band. Lesh has made one other crucial connection, bringing in Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter to write the words for six of the 11 songs. (One of them is “Liberty,” a Jerry Garcia co-composition the Grateful Dead performed toward the end.) Hunter has a distinctive, wordy writing style, full of allusions, aphorisms, and wordplay that will be familiar to any Deadhead. The leadoff track, “Celebration,” with music by Lesh, is very much the product of the team who wrote the Grateful Dead’s “Box of Rain”; it is a statement of purpose, proclaiming a recommitment to a positive viewpoint despite “stolen elections, corruption, and hate.” Haynes, who does most of the singing (though Lesh and Barraco get leads, too), was a careful student of Gregg Allman’s throaty style, and his stinging slide guitar work recalls Duane Allman. For the most part, the bandmembers keep their natural tendency to jam in check, placing emphasis on the well-written songs. The tracks run four to six minutes each and usually fade out with the band still playing, so this material no doubt stretches out in concert. The result is a surprisingly well-organized and accessible collection that is the best album yet made by a Grateful Dead spinoff band.

Philip Glass – Lavinia Meijer: Metamorphosis; The Hours (2012) MCH SACD ISO

Philip Glass – Lavinia Meijer: Metamorphosis; The Hours (2012)
SACD ISO: DSD64 2.0, DST64 5.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Artwork | 3.34 GB
Genre: Classical, Instrumental, Harp | Label: Channel Classics | Release Year: 2012

You can see what Philip Glass liked about the harp in his music. On one hand, it’s a close substitute for a piano, which is involved in the originals of all three of these transcriptions. The excerpts from The Hours (tracks 7-12) were transcribed from a piano version of the original Nicole Kidman film soundtrack score, and unsurprisingly Meijer said that of the three works, that one gave her the most trouble. But the harp is not equivalent to the piano in Glass’ textures. Instead, with its greater variety of sonorities and attacks, it adds a slight elaboration to Glass’ basic structures. And this is where the sound must have caught the composer’s attention: the kind of details Meijer adds to the music is the same as what Glass himself has added to his music over the years. The result is an unusually satisfying way to encounter the music of Philip Glass, even though he, unlike Arvo Pärt, has rarely been subject to transcription. Audiophiles may have their own reasons for acquiring this release; Channel Classics’ Super Audio recording (sampled here on a good conventional stereo) does an astonishingly good job in capturing the tonal subtleties of the harp.

Vocalist Philip Bailey’s high-flying falsetto made Earth, Wind & Fire an immortal supergroup. On this album, he’s backed by a streamlined combo featuring saxophonist Bob Belden, keyboardists Scott Kinsey and Myron McKinley, and remixer DJ Smash. Nine of the 11 tracks are updated classic jazz, pop, and R&B/fusion-tinged tunes, from Nat “King” Cole’s “Nature Boy” to Freddie Hubbard’s “On the Red Clay”. Thelonious Monk’s “Ruby My Dear” is revived as a quiet-storm ballad, “Dear Ruby”. “My Indiscretions”, Bailey’s take on the funky, futuristic Weather Report jam, “Indiscretions”, features catchy lyrics by the singer’s son, Sir Bailey. Chick Corea’s “Sometime Ago” is turned into a club-friendly dance number, while Herbie Hancock’s “Tell Me a Bedtime Story” is retouched with Afro-Latin tinges. The church-inspired EW&F hit, “Keep Your Head to the Sky”, is rendered with hip-hop-styled rim shots. Philip Bailey’s vocalisms show that Soul on Jazz does mix.

Pharoah Sanders is one of the few horn players whose sound is instantly commanding and recognizable. He’s often compared to John Coltrane in their similar power, spirituality, and preference for the meaty middle register of the tenor, and in fact, one of the selections here is a long, atmospheric meditation on Coltrane’s “Welcome”. This album is a rare treat, since Sanders has not been recording as prolifically as he did in the first four decades of his career.

The body of work by Edward Kennedy Ellington, the Duke of music, it extends to more than 800 works according to Wynton Marsalis. He isn’t just one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century but arguably the one that defines the sound of his era with more accuracy – the music he left though, is timeless. His style is far away from conventional, it is always creative and inventive, symphonic and humorous, rich but straight to the point. His presence in any history book should be taken for granted.
