The iconic jazz trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker, one of the true greats in jazz, recorded live at the legendary Hamburg venue Onkel Pö’s Carnegie Hall in 1979. Baker’s music here is crystal clear, powerful, compact and focused. Eloquently he tells the story of the compositions he selected for that evening; just ¬five pieces for 100 minutes – Cole Porter’s standard “Love for Sale” as an opener, interpreted in a slightly rocky way, then the empathic fable “You Can’t Go Home Again” by Don Sebesky, followed by “There’ll Never Be Another You” by Harry Warren as a showcase for Baker’s unique, fragile and yet seductive scat, as well as two true highlights: “Black Eyes” by Wayne Shorter and “Broken Wing” by Richie Beirach. Chet Baker himself never composed a song – but like no other, he was able to absorb and understand the best music ideas of his contemporaries. Three excellent musicians accompanied Baker on the tour: Phil Markovitz from New York on the piano and the Belgian bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, the trio was completed by the drummer Charlie Rice, from Philadelphia.

“Contacted by phone at his home just south of San Francisco, Chester Thompson is quick in his response to a question about a record he made in three hours on a Sunday afternoon fifty years ago, Powerhouse. ‘I was a young man, and it was an opportunity to show people that I could play a Hammond B-3 organ.’ Little did Thompson know then that he was showing people who would place him on an unexpected career path into the whirlwind of pop music. Louis Pain, an outstanding B-3 player in the Pacific Northwest, knows the story behind Thompson being hired by one of the hottest pop-funk bands in the country. ‘I’d been listening to Chester for a few years,’ he tells this writer. ‘I was going to the Fillmore district club, the Off Plaza, where his trio played mainly soul cover tune. [So] when I was living in a house with Tower Of Power’s guitarist Bruce Conte, I played him Chester’s album, telling him that this was who the band should hire to play keyboards as they were on the verge of getting someone else.’ Pain also tried to interest TOP saxophonist Lennie Pickett in hiring Thompson. ‘Lennie was un-persuaded. He said, ‘I know this cat can’t play the bass pedals like Billy Preston,’ and I replied that actually he could. Lennie, going ballistic, said, ‘I’m going to go down to this guy’s gig just so I can tell you how full of crap you are!’ Conte, Pickett and band drummer David Garibaldi, with Pain tagging along, did just that. They were thunderstruck. Tower Of Power bought Thompson a B-3 and he stayed in the band for the next ten years, until 1983. Then he joined Santana, working with that globally successful rock band until 2009. In addition to his obvious familiarity with 1960s soul jazz, the B-3 dynamo proves to have modern jazz inclinations. Sax man Rudy Johnson, influenced by John Coltrane and Eddie Harris, slathers his soulfulness over the tunes. Chester didn’t know trombonist Al Hall, Jr. and drummer Ray Pounds before the record date and sometimes the music sounds under-rehearsed, but in the end Powerhouse delivers the goods.” (Frank-John Hadley, Downbeat)

The Complete Chesky Records 30th Anniversary Collection

Right from the start Chesky Records had a sound. David Chesky set out to make “aural photographs” of each session, capturing as much of the sound of being there as the technology allowed, continually pushing it forward. Every note of every session was recorded “live,” there were no overdubs, no fixing it in the mix. What went down at the session, with some of the world’s greatest musicians, was in the CD, LP, or later on, high-resolution digital download.

Chesky mostly recorded in great sounding acoustic spaces, namely churches and concert halls, with the earliest sessions conducted in the legendary, and sorely missed, RCA/BMG studios in midtown Manhattan.

Every session presented unique challenges, but David Chesky and his engineers, first Bob Katz, then Miguel Kertsman, Barry Wolifson, and for the last decade or so, Nicholas Prout, continued to advance the state of the recording art. We hope you enjoy the music as much as we did recording it!

The Bell features dynamic chamber music compositions written for masterful improvisers. “The best thing I caught all weekend,” said critic Peter Margasak of the 2014 New York Winter Jazzfest, “was a superb trio led by drummer Ches Smith with pianist Craig Taborn and violist Mat Maneri, which expertly infused seductively narcotic writing with a mixture of brooding melody and rich texture.” Since that NY debut, the trio has become a priority project for all participants and in June 2015 Smith, Taborn and Maneri recorded The Bell at Avatar Studios with Manfred Eicher as producer. Ches Smith’s first album as a leader for ECM follows appearances for the label with Tim Berne’s Snakeoil and with Robin Williamson. Ches has worked a very wide range of music in the course of his career, playing with musicians from Terry Riley to Wadada Leo Smith to Marc Ribot and his own groups have been informed by his far-reaching experience. His early biography included studies in composition with Pauline Oliveros and Alvin Curran and his taut writing for the trio on The Bell triggers inspired contributions from Taborn and Maneri, in an album which gradually builds in intensity. “The Bell” is issued on the eve of a major tour with concerts in the US, Canada, Portugal, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway through January and February. In March the trio heads to South America.

Maria Callas, Orch del Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Tullio Serafin – Luigi Cherubini: Medea (1957/2014) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Medea is one of the roles most closely associated with Maria Callas – and it is Medea, rather than Médée, because she only ever sang Cherubini’s Médée (1797) in the Italian translation by Carlo Zangarini. It occupies sixth place in the list of roles she sang most often, with a total of 31 performances, and it was a part to which she brought an especially personal and intensely felt interpretation, informed by both her Greek background and her matchless talent for tragedy. Although she was associated above all with the Romantic bel canto repertoire and with Verdi, she also ventured with great success into the Classical repertoire, appearing on stage in works by composers from Gluck (Alceste, Ifigenia in Tauride) to Haydn (Orfeo ed Euridice – she made her debut as Eurydice on stage in Florence with Erich Kleiber in 1951) and Mozart (Die Entführung aus dem Serail at La Scala in 1952, in Italian). To these one could add Spontini’s La vestale (1807), which lies stylistically somewhere between Médée and Norma (La Scala, 1954), even Beethoven’s Fidelio (1804–14), which she sang in Athens in 1944. Medea, falling between the late Classical and pre-Romantic, was the ideal role for Callas (she starred again as the sorceress of Colchis in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s film Medea in 1969, in an altogether different kind of classical reinterpretation, which, although non-musical, had a preview screening at the Paris Opéra). It was at the 1953 Maggio Musicale in Florence that Callas made her debut as Medea, under the baton of Vittorio Gui: the live recording stands as a lasting legacy of her incredible stage presence. So successful was she that La Scala engaged her to repeat the role at the end of the same year, this time with Leonard Bernstein on the podium: another live recording captured another incomparable moment in operatic history. After performances in Venice, Rome, Dallas, London and even the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, it was in this most emblematic of roles that Callas bid her final farewell to La Scala, on 29 May 1962. In between the two, in September 1957 (the same year as Il barbiere di Siviglia, La sonnambula, Turandot and Manon Lescaut!), Callas recorded Medea in Milan, in a version that differed somewhat from her stage performances, if only for the reduced, almost chamber-like orchestral ensemble and the generally incisive nature of its playing, closer to the practice of the late 18th century than to the pre-Romantic feel of her stage incarnation of Medea. –MICHEL ROUBINET

It makes so much sense, it’s a wonder this took so long. An album of ABBA covers by camp queen Cher is a match made in pop-music heaven. The ostensible inspiration for the set was her cameo in Mamma Mia 2, where she delivered a faithful rendition of the timeless ballad “Fernando”. But who needs a reason to justify 10 new takes on ABBA’s biggest hits? From the piano vamp of “Dancing Queen” that opens the album, it’s clear nobody is trying to reinvent the wheel here. These tracks, FM radio staples for 40-plus years already, are given a spit shine and updated production values, but they’re otherwise straightforward takes that make clear the producers’ (and the performer’s) reverence for the source material. Only at the end does the formula change: “One of Us”, a heartbreaking standout from the Swedish group’s final album, The Visitors, is stripped down to strings and piano, leaving only Cher’s voice to channel all of the emotion from the devastating lyrics.
