Coleman Randolph Hawkins, nicknamed Hawk and sometimes “Bean”, was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. One of the first prominent jazz musicians on his instrument, as Joachim E. Berendt explained: “there were some tenor players before him, but the instrument was not an acknowledged jazz horn”. While Hawkins is strongly associated with the swing music and big band era, he had a role in the development of bebop in the 1940s.

This unique 1958 recording is a collaboration between Coleman Hawkins and the Oscar Peterson Trio. Hawkins’s voluminous, supple tenor sax sound, which had a great influence on the styles of musicians ranging from Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins up to Joe Lovano, is best heard on Honey Flower. The album features Ben Webster on tenor sax, Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Hank Jones on piano, George Duvivier on double bass and drummers Alvin Stoller and Mickey Sheen.

The Jazz Couriers were a British jazz quintet formed in April 1957 and which disbanded in August 1959.
“Formed in the UK in 1957, the Jazz Couriers were an outstanding hard bop band. They developed a vibrant attacking style that provided a base for fine solo playing by its two co-founders, tenor saxophonists Tubby Hayes (b. Edward Brian Hayes, 30 January 1935, London, England, d. 8 June 1973, London, England) and Ronnie Scott (b. Ronald Schatt, 28 January 1927, London, England, d. 23 December 1996, London, England). The ensemble was enhanced by Hayes alternative instrument, the vibraphone, which created a distinctive sound that effectively distanced the group from that of Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers, to which it owed a passing nod of acknowledgement. The music played, ensemble and solo, was of extraordinarily high quality and, not surprisingly, the Couriers were an influential presence on the UK jazz scene.

“T-SQUARE alpha” started its activities as a unit form of Takeshi Itoh and Satoshi Bandoh 44 years after his professional debut in 1978. The name T-SQUARE alpha has the meaning of plus alpha that something is added freely to the next. This album has wonderful support members and guests who deserve such a name. Kazumi Watanabe (Gt), Japan’s world-class top jazz guitarist in both name and reality. Hirokuni Korekata (Gt), an ally. Masato Honda (Sax) and Keiji Matsumoto (Key) who will participate in T-SQUARE for the first time in more than 20 years. Furthermore, as Japan’s top horn section, Eric Miyashiro (Tp), Koji Nishimura (Tp), Eijiro Nakagawa (Tb), Nobuhide Handa (Tb) who lead the Blue Note Tokyo Jazz Orchestra. Rock-solid support members indispensable for T-SQUARE Shingo Tanaka (Ba), Akito Shirai (Key), Yudai Sato (Key). In addition, there are already a lot of great young musicians in attendance. There is no doubt that this album, in which the top musicians in Japan participate, is a perfect album for the new T-SQUARE.

The great Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk makes a triumphal return to chamber music with his regular piano partner Håvard Gimse. The programme features two English composers, Benjamin Britten and his teacher Frank Bridge, whose Cello Sonata was written during the First World War and is tinged with despair and searing emotional force. Britten composed his Cello Sonata in 1961, following his meeting with Mstislav Rostropovich, to whom he dedicated the work. Another person traumatised by the Great War was Debussy, who wrote: ‘It was cowardly to think only of the horrors being committed, without trying to react by rebuilding, insofar as my strength allowed, a little of that beauty which is currently under attack.’ His Cello Sonata (1915) was the first of a series of six sonatas for various instruments that he planned to compose, only managing to write three before his death. As a determined Moravian nationalist, Janáček did not entitle his three-movement work of 1910 ‘sonata’; he called it Pohádka (Fairy tale) and based it on a poem by Vasily Zhukovsky.

The classically trained Danish pianist and producer Troels Hammer is unfolding yet another story with his new album ‘House Of Memories’.
His compositions are warm and human, playing with the principles of ambient music in both deep rhythms and beatless compositions.
Amongst the compositions is ‘Fly Salmon Fly’. The tune lets you follow the journey of the wild Norwegian salmon life cycle. From hatching in Norway’s famous fjords, and heading out to saltwater feeding grounds, before enduring the stressful journey upstream, returning to their native rivers to spawn. Troels makes this astonishing journey seem elegant and pleasing, thereby making one interpret the passage of existence.
Troels has also done a cover of Aphex Twin – Avril 14th. The melody draws one back to the flowers blooming in spring. Just like the meaning of Avril – “to open” – springtime lets nature open and unfold its annual transformation.
The title track ‘Memorial Mountains’ and the album itself are dedicated to Troels dear friend and their friendship. A friend Troels lost a few years back in the Alps. Troels says “we did many things together – fishing in Norway, skiing in the mountains, drinking coffee and having a story together from Africa. Sometimes our families travelled along in South East Asia – it was good times!”
The album is also dedicated to the beautiful life giving nature – mother earth – that Troels and his friend loved.
With a pure sense of catching the atmospheric presence, Troels effortlessly captures the listener and makes one move through moments in space and time with ease.

This album includes Ralph Vaughan Williams’s three pieces for brass band – Henry the Fifth Overture, Prelude on Three Welsh Hymns and Variations for Brass Band. In addition we hear the brass band version of the Tuba Concerto and many new arrangements of popular pieces by Paul Hindmarsh (who curated and produced the album) and Phillip Littlemore. The origins of Tredegar Town Band date back to 1849, and the band was formally constituted in 1876. Over the last 40 years they have become one of the world’s elite brass band performers, claiming the British Open title in 2010 and again in 2013.
