GRAMMY® Award-winning mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli is one of today’s best-selling classical recording artists. Bartoli’s recordings shine light on underappreciated gems in the classical repertoire. Her latest concept album is the music of Agostino Steffani. Steffani is the unsung master of early Baroque opera. The project includes solo arias of various moods and styles, several sensational duets, solo numbers with chorus and instrumental interludes. Mission delves into international politics, religious conflict, diplomatic secrecy and much more, all executed by Bartoli’s detailed and dramatic performance.

“The mezzo-soprano has become a champion of forgotten music.” – Wall Street Journal

This new Vivaldi album marks a double anniversary, the thirty-year anniversary of the close collaboration between Cecilia Bartoli and the famous English label Decca, and the twenty-year anniversary of the very successful first Vivaldian opus. This time leaving behind Giovanni Antonini and his Il Giardino Armonico ensemble, Cecilia Bartoli has selected French musicians well versed in Vivaldi’s music, as if to demonstrate the universal nature of the Red Priest’s compositions. In fact, Jean-Christophe Spinosi and his Ensemble Matheus have distinguished themselves with Vivaldi’s instrumental music since their early days.

The Spanish folk artist Cecilia was born Evangelina Sobredo Galanes in Madrid, on October 11, 1948. The daughter of diplomats, she spent many of her early years traveling internationally. Through active travel she learned English, and subsequently most of her early songs were written in that language. In 1970 she formed a group called Expresion, with whom she recorded her first singles, “Have You Ever Seen a Blue Man?” and “Try and Catch the Sun.” Cecilia continued to record through 1970 and 1971 for CBS (now Sony BMG) before recording her first solo record in 1972, entitled Cecilia, which produced many of her early hits like “Dama Dama,” “Fui,” “Señor y Dueno,” and “Nada de Nada.” Throughout the mid- to late ’70s Cecilia continued to write songs that met with success and acclaim, like “Querida España” and “Amor de Medianoche.” In that time, recognition of her work continued to grow, thanks to concerts given at songwriting festivals and appearances on Televisión Española. In 1976, during the time she was working on an album dedicated to poet Valle Inclan, Cecilia was killed in a car accident as she returned from a concert in Vigo. The summer after her death, her songs “El Viaje” and “Lluvia” were released to pay homage to her, and were met with a strong public reception. Since that time, many collections of her work have been released, and continue to be popular and well-loved.

Announcing herself with 2013’s sumptuous WomanChild, Cécile McLorin Salvant takes her sound still further on her new record, For One to Love, released on the Mack Avenue label. The album is masterful, a more complete offering on every level, in which the songstress permits her voice to work sonic miracles. Besides being a jazz singer of the highest calibre, McLorin Salvant was born on August 28th 1989 in Miami, Florida, studied French Law, while dabbling in baroque and jazz vocals in Aix-en-Provence, before going on to win the Thelonious Monk contest in 2010 (at just 20 years of age, before a jury composed of Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti Austin, Dianne Reeves, and Kurt Elling!). As if all this wasn’t enough, the young artist is also an impressive composer, evidenced by the five original songs within this 2015 vintage. For One to Love takes in a variety of covers, too, including an incendiary version of ‘Wives and Lovers’, an old Burt Bacharach composition, alongside Blanche Calloway’s ‘Growlin’ Dan’ (Calloway was, of course, the first woman to lead a band of men!), and ‘What’s The Matter Now’, a track initially popularized by Bessie Smith. Another highlight on the disc comes in the form of a stunning reinterpretation of ‘Mal de vivre’ by Barbara. In sum, For One to Love proves to be a beautiful room for the voice of the young Franco-American, Harlem-based singer to play out in. It is a great moment for vocal jazz; the treble quivers, the bass stirs the soul. The greatness is aided through the music served up by the four backing musicians: pianist Aaron Diehl, bassist Paul Sikivie, drummer Lawrence Leathers, and accordionist Vincent Peirani. A momentous record.

One album after another, Cecile McLorin Salvant reminds us she’s anything but the stereotypical “jazz singer”. Revealed to the public in 2013 with her gorgeousWomanChild, she stepped it up a gear two years later with For One To Love, an even more masterful and complete record, on which her voice worked wonders. Born on August 28th, 1989 in Miami, Florida, she studied French law, baroque and vocal jazz in Aix-en-Provence before winning the Thelonious Monk International Competition in 2010 (at only 20, in front of a jury composed of Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti Austin, Dianne Reeves and Kurt Elling!). She went on to display impressive qualities as a composer as well with five original songs on her 2015 album. With Dreams And Dagger the French-American, who now lives in Harlem, is releasing a third album recorded live at Village Vanguard, the New York Mecca of jazz, and at the DiMenna Center, supported by her faithful trio (pianist Aaron Diehl, bass player Paul Sikivie and drummer Lawrence Leathers) and some guests on a few tracks, such as Quatuor Catalyst and pianist Sullivan Fortner. A real choice for the artist, who wishes she could only record live albums, the context in which her band’s sound is most faithfully presented. More classic in its form than her two previous works, Dreams And Dagger is proof of her fluency no matter the repertoire. For a classic like My Man’s Gone Now, for which thousands of versions already exist, she embarks with her voice on unique paths, to astounding effect! Furthermore, Cecile McLorin Salvant fully bonds with her trio, which isn’t just a simple stooge for her amazing voice, but an essential part of her musical world. Once again, she blazes an even deeper trail, far from the Billie/Sarah/Ella Holy Trinity, because as Wynton Marsalis put it: “You only get a singer like this once in a generation or two…”.

No, “La Spagnoletta” is not the name of a composer: it’s the first piece on this album, which probably dates back to the late 16th century, and which provided many musicians with the raw material for fantasias, partitas, caprices, arias and all the conceivable musical forms then in vogue. We start with Giovan Battista Ferrini (1601-1674) and his Tastata per cembalo La Spagnoletta, followed by one of the “clearer” pieces, which takes up the source, The Old Spagnoletta by Giles Farnaby (1563-1640). Frescobaldi himself gets involved with his Capriccio VI sopra la Spagnoletta, while Johann Speth (1664-1719) throws in his Partite divers sopra la Spagnioletta and finally Bernardo Storace (1637-1707) his Aria sopra la Spagnoletta.

A leader in the revolution that overtook jazz in the late 50’s and early 60’s, pianist Cecil Taylor’s ‘Unit’ groups reflect the move towards total ensemble Play. The concept of soloist and accompanist is abolished; instead, the improvisations consist of a continual interchange of ideas between players. Alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons played with Taylor from 1961 until Lyon’s death in 1986. Heavily influenced by Charlie Parker, his lyrical style helped tie Taylor’s style to more traditional jazz roots. Trumpeter Ralphe Malik worked with Taylor throughout the 70’s on into the 80’s. “A superb, incendiary performer”, Malik also recorded a series of critically acclaimed albums of his own. Drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson and bassist Sirone are the only musicians to have performed and recorded with the three prime shapers of free jazz, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, and Albert Ayler. The themes are loosely played melodic phrases used as a starting point for improvisation. In The Eel Pot, Taylor’s sparse, foreboding lines lead into the ensemble’s free interpretation of the theme. The piece proceeds to run the gamut of emotions, with extreme use of dynamics and space. Sperichill On Calling begins with an exquisite piano solo, moves to an ensemble march on into Lyon’s slashing solo accompanied by staccato violin. Movements vary from tender reflection to a seething maelstrom. Intense music that has retained its exploratory depth.
