Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original master tapes to vinyl and PCM. The DSD was sourced from the PCM. George listened to all of the different A/D converters he had before he chose which to use, and he felt the George Massenburg GML 20 bit A/D produced the best and most synergistic sound for the project.

“I really think that the people who are willing to lay down their money for these reissues are going to get something really outstanding.” — George Marino, Sterling Sound engineer, commenting on Analogue Productions’ Verve 25-title reissue series.

One of the giants of the alto saxophone, Johnny Hodges was perhaps the most important soloist and sideman in Duke Ellington’s orchestra from 1928 up to Hodges’ death in 1970. The self-taught player made many solo forays during his long career – one of his ’50s outfits included a young John Coltrane – but history remembers Hodges for his virtuosic sidemanship, particularly his sensitive rendering of ballads.

Billie Holiday – All Or Nothing At All (1959/2012) [DSF 2.0 Mono DSD64/2.82MHz]

Billie Holiday – All Or Nothing At All (1959/2012)
DSF 2.0 Mono DSD64/2.82MHz  | Time – 00:51:12 minutes | 2,02 GB | Genre: Jazz
Source: ISO SACD | ©  Verve Records
Recorded: Radio Recorders and Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California on August 14 & 18, 1956 and from January 3-9, 1957

Recorded in 1956 and 1957, All Or Nothing At All was one of Billie Holiday’s last releases before her death in 1959. A collection of jazz and pop standards by the Gershwins, Irving Berlin and Duke Ellington, among others, the album was produced by legendary producer Norman Granz. Holiday runs the emotional gamut from summery optimism (Love Is Here To Stay) to pathos-rich musings (Ill Wind) backed by a strong studio lineup of veterans including Red Mitchell on bass and Ben Webster on tenor saxophone.

“These seven West Coast recording sessions – two dates in August 1956 and a marathon five in one week following January with Sweets Edison, Ben Webster, and Jimmy Rowles – together make the most satisfying set in the singer’s Fifties discography. In fact, this is the one program to put up against her Thirties recordings.”- Verve Music Group

“These are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don’t want to miss…most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty!” – Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011

Giovanni Battista Velluti (1780–1861) was one of the last of the larger-than-life castrati who had dominated operatic life in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Velluti, though, spent his career almost entirely in the Romantic era, singing the music of his day. His style of ornamentation attracted widespread admiration and set the standard for the prime donne who were emerging as the stars of their age in operas by such composers as Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. Here the American male soprano Robert Crowe recreates Velluti’s extraordinary sound-world, in a recording that helps explain why such diverse luminaries as Stendhal, Mary Shelley and the Duke of Wellington admired Velluti as one of the most accomplished and inventive singers of his time.

Guitarist Kenny Burrell, who isn’t generally known for hanging out with big bands, now has one of his own: the Los Angeles-based Jazz Orchestra Unlimited, for which he serves as music director on its debut album, Unlimited 1, Live at Catalina’s. While the ensemble is splendid, individually and collectively, there’s no doubt that Burrell is the star attraction. Any misgiving about that is erased by the fact that the names of orchestra members aren’t listed in the Catalina’s booklet except as soloists. Luckily, most of them have at least one chance to do so, leaving less than a handful of uncounted participants.

Iconic pianist Enrico Pieranunzi was an enthusiastic follower of the late Bill Evans in his early days and soon became sought-after amongst the greatest American musicians to come to Italy (from Chet Baker to Lee Konitz). Across his long career, this major figure in European jazz has developed a personal style that’s both sophisticated, rich and leans into the intoxication of swing and melodic seduction. He effortlessly handles even the most diverse orchestral formats (though he shows a slight preference for the trio) and specialises in creating albums based on the great figures from his personal hall of fame—be they jazz musicians (‘Infant Eyes’ inspired by Wayne Shorter or ‘Dukes’s Dream’ devoted to Edward Ellington), screen composers (from Morricone to Nino Rota) or the big names of Western classical music (Scarlatti, Bach, Haendel, Martinu…).

This Charles Mingus album, recorded in 1957 although not released until 1962, was inspired by the man’s visit to the titular Mexican town and the music is redolent of ‘latin influence’ both in name and sound. Of course, Mingus was one of the most expansive and progressive composers ever in jazz and here the man’s development process towards extensive, almost classical, ensemble pieces is in evidence particularly on the extended numbers, Ysabel’s Table Dance and Los Mariachis, in effect tracing a path between the previous year’s ground-breaking ‘orchestral piece’, Pithecanthropus Erectus, and the later (and, arguably, Mingus’ career highpoint) 11-piece, seamless single composition that was The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady.

Whether in concert or a studio setting, Monty Alexander never ceases to communicate his joy and passion for jazz.

Captured live at the 1976 Montreux Festival on the shores of Lake Geneva, this recording best exemplifies Monty Alexander’s infectious joie de vivre and mastery of the eighty-eight keys.

Recently re-issued on the MPS imprint, this career-defining album features the Jamaican maestro in collaboration with the then little-known duo of bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton.

‘Ampzilla 2000’ Demonstration Reference Disc | Top Music Intl. # SACD-8020.2 | Made in Japan by Sony

This was quite a surprise, coming from the Asian label specializing in various audiophile CDs and SACDs of more middle-of-the-road material. The two sessions that produced these dozen tracks both were recorded in Copenhagen in 1965, and for most of the tracks – as you can see – Webster’s band was mostly local musicians. Ben Webster was one of many black American jazz men who moved to Europe in the 1960s or later. Denmark and Holland were his main bases of operation. Earlier he had been a mainstay of Norman Granz’ Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts, and had also played with Ellington for a few years.
Nobody else achieved quite the rich, warm, soulful and caressing tenor sax sound so distinctively laid down by Ben Webster. And I don’t believe I’ve ever heard it so cleanly and realistically as on this reissue disc. In the booklet remastering engineer Povee Chan lists some of the gear involved, and it’s obvious no effort was spared to transfer these old stereotapes with the very highest fidelity humanly possible. The European players are right up to American standards in playing proficiency. This is great stuff. The CD layer doesn’t sound seriously compromised either.

They don’t make ’em like this anymore. Oliver Nelson, one of the great composer/arrangers of his generation, brings 20 or so guys with invincible swing in their DNA into a studio with some killer charts to play, and Johnny Hodges stands in front of them and does what Johnny Hodges does. The result was a classic album that’s given me great pleasure.
Recorded almost a year before his death this album would be Hodges last as a leader. It features an all star band that includes seven members from Ellington’s band plus Ron Carter, Randy Brecker and Hank Jones. This album both swings and has some blues. It’s an excellent recording and if you’re a Hodges fan it’s for you.
